Mrs. Ollie Belle Glover, a
Roistered Nurse, gave her life
in the line of duty when she
attempted to save her patient.
She was the former wife of (he
iate Phil J. Young of
Bilocksvdiie.
Mrs. Glover was caring for
her patient, a resident of (he
Pioneer Hotd, when the tragic
fire occurred. Both died in the
smoke and flames on the
morning of December 20th. Her
patient wa's a Mr. Mallcry, 80-
years of age and a vice
president of General Motmrs
Corporation. He had nurses
around the dock and Mrs.
Glover was his 11 p. m. to 7a. m.
nurse for war a year.

of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bledsoe of
Tallahassee, Florida. She is the
mother of Mrs. Jim Gibbens of-
Los Angeles, California and
Mrs. Mary (%avez of Tuscon,
Arizona. She is a sister of Mrs.
Besde Young of Tallahassee,
Florida. She is also survived by
three grandchildrm.

declining health for one year,seriously ill for one month.
Bom April 1,1899 in DavidsonCounty, he was the son of the
late John Marshall and Ida
Young Call.He graduated from the North
Carolina School for the Deaf InMorganton. Prior to his
retirement, he was a machinist
for Erwln Mills for 33 years.
Mr. Call was a member of St.
Paul's Episcopal Qturch and
the Patriotic Order of Sons of
Known in Piedmont North
Carolina as the "father of the
deaf," Mr. Call lost his hearing
at oge H. Later he became
instrumental in forming or
helping to maintain 2S Sunday
Schools for the deaf and
regularly conducted classes atvarious lurches throughout
this area. He also taught signlanguage classes at Salisbury's
recreation center.
Mr. Call gave numerous talks
at meetings, parties and picnics
for deaf persons and wroteregularly for a publication
desired for deaf persons In this
State.
His wife, the former Patria
Leo, died in 1962.

Train Hits Machine

to Mocksville died early Friday,
Feb. I21h from injuries received
in a Thursday aflemoon traffic
accident on company property.
Htls was the fifth traffic
fatality in Rowan County this
year.
The employe. Identified as
Isaac I. Hardison of Rt. 5,
Mocksville, reportedly was
merating a quarry machine
near the Southern Railway
crossing when struck by a local
train at 2:25 pjn.

cording to a ho^ital report.
No charges will apparently be
issued. The Rowan Cbunty
Sheriff's Department was
called into Investigate the ac*
ddent since it occurred on
private property.
The quarry madilne, which was
to haul stone, and the
oigine of the train were both
extensively damaged in the
accident, according to reports.
The train was operated by W.
W. Webb of CocIe«nee. A
spokesman for the Southern
Railway said that thetrain was
on regular sdiedule traveling
from Mocksville to Mocresville.
No further ddails of the
accident were available.

Found Frozen
The body of a Davic County
man was found early Friday
morning In the Barney Hill
section of Vadkin County.
He was identified as Junior
Lee Scott, 50, of Mocksville,
Route 4.
Dr. L. S. Hall, a Vadkin
0}unty medical examiner, said
that Scott died of exposure. He
said the man was frozen to
death.
Dr. Hall said Scott was found
in a field, and that he suspected
that the man had been there for
over two days. He also said he
found no evidence of foul play.
He was born in Davie County.

employee of the Hanes Corp.

died Tuesday night at the Davle
County Hospital following an
illness of several months. He
was 70 years of age.
Funeral services will be held

will be in Rose Cemetery.

Mr. Johnstone was bom on
December 23, 1800 In
Mocksvilie, the son of John
Brevard Johnstone and
Margaret Augustus Knox
Johnstone.
Graduating from the
Mocksvilie Hl^ School, he
attended the McCallie
ihreparatory School In Chat
tanooga, Tenn. and Davidson
College, the class of 1920.
In 1926 Mr. Johnstone joined
his father and Jake Hancs as
the vice presidenl of Hanes
Chair and Table Company. His
father was president and Mr.
Hanea was secretary. The
company specialized in the
manufacture of chairs and
(abies.
In February of 1037 he

Davie and served in this
capacity for 33 years. His
tenure was the longest of any
president of the Bank of Davie.
In 1967 with the merger with the
Branch Banking and Trust
Company, he remained in the
top local capacity as senior vice
president.
Early in 1970 Mr. Johnstone
retired from his banking post to
enjoy his two farms. This
retirement came aRer 33 active
years in the banking business.
Few, If any, In the state had this
record.
A most active person in all
phases of community life, he
was a member of Mocksvilie
Masonic Lodge No. 134 and
served as general chairman of
the Annual Masonic Picnic for
approximately 20 years.
He was a charter member of
the original Lions Club in
Mocksvilie in the 1930*8 which
disbanded after several years
because of the lack of meeting
facilities.
He was a charter member of
the Mocksvilie Rotary Club.
In 194$ he served as chairman
of the Davie County Democratic
Executive Committee. In 1947
he was elected as' Davie
County's Rq>re8entative to the
North Carolina General
Assembly.
For a great number of years
he served as chairman of Davie
County for the sale of U. S.
Savins fonds and during this
tenure this county exceeded Its
quota almost evwy year.
He was one of the prime
organizers of the 11-county
Northwestern North Carolina
Devdopment Association, and
served as the second president
in 19$5.
He headed the drive that
raised funds to erect the new
Davle County Library building
on North Main Street.
An active member of the First
Presbyterian Church, he served
as superintendent of the Sunday
School, as deacon and elder.
Mr. Johnstone was married to
the former Carroll Smith of
Washington, D. C. who sur
vives. There are two children:

and Mrs. Bernard Crowcli of
HendersonvUle, N. C. There are
4 grandchildren.
