Davie County Hospital.
Cause of death was a gunshot
wound.
George Lee Seamon, Jr., 47,
of Mocksville Rl. 5, was
arrested and charged with
murder.
Sheriff Joe Smith said that
Motes was shot about 2 p.ffl.
with a 4l0>flauge shotgun. The
shooting took place at the
Seamon home where the two
had reported been drinking.

. A spokesman for the Advance
Volunteer Fire Department said
the two people.were identified!
as John Frank Griffith, 85, and
Mrs. Annie Lee Dowell, 5IV,both
of Advance, Rt. 1 the Yadkin
Valley Road.
The spokesman said the fires
apparently started about 10:30
p.m. Both were trying to get out
of the house but were trapped,
the spokesman said.
A graveside service for
Griffith will be at 11 a.m. today
at Yadkin Valley Baptist
Church cemetery.
He was born in Davie County
to William and Ada Miller
Griffith. He was a retired
farmer and a member of the
Yadkin Valley Baptist Ch^ch.

Mocksville Man Dies
In Auto Collision
Holand Richard Fowler, 47, of
Holman Street, Mocksville, was
killed and another person was
injured Saturday night in a
collision on old U.S. 52 at
Stanlesrville.
State Highway Patrolman J.
C. George identified the injured
person as Ira Ihomas 'Gibble,
18, of 3094 H^diana Avenue. He
said the accident happened
about 8:50 p.m. just south of
Stanleyville Drive.
George said Gibhle was
headed north, and his 1971
^Fontiac crossed the center line,
striking Fowler's 1964 Chevrolet
almost head on.
Ihe impact heavily damaged
both cars and scattered glass
over a large area of the
highway. The two vehicles were
several feet apart when officers
arrived, he said.
Fowler ' was pinned in his
istation wagon for 10 minutes
and was dead when taken to
Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
Gibble was treated and released
at the hospital.
Gibble was charged with
drunken driving, George said.
Fowler was bom in Iredell
County to Thomas A. and Eular
Clark Fowler. He was an em
ploye at F and T Auto Service
at Rural Hall and was a
member of Fairfield Baptist
Church in Davie County.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Leotha Dulin Fowler; a
daughter, Mrs. Valeria Chunn
of Modcsville, Rt 4; two sons,
Garlemd Fowler of the home

Mr. Basinger died Friday at
the Davie County Hospital after
an extended illness.
He was born in Cabarrus
County on November 8, 1B9B,
son of the late Michael and
Mary Sulher Basinger. He
attended school in China Grove
and N. C. Stale. He came to
Mocksviilc in 1946 as manager
of the Davie Feed and Seed
Company, distributors of
Puriana products.
A Lutheran, he atlendcd the
First Methodist Church of
Mocksviile until the Holy Cross
Lutheran Church was
organized, of which he then
became a charter member.
He is survived by one sister,
Mrs. Ralph Deal of China
Grove; four brothers, Mitchell

Basinger of China Grove, and
Gien and Ray Basinger of
Salisbury.

Charlotte
A Davic County man was
Iwaten to death the night of
February 28th in Charlotte, and
a Mecklenburg County man has
been charged in connection with
his death.
A spokesman for the
Charlotte police department
identified the dead man as
Shirley Chester Studevcnt Sr.,
:«}. of the Redland community.
Charged with murder is Henry
Earl Funderburke, 24, of
Charlotte.
The spokesman said
Studevent was beaten to death
with an iron pipe about 10:40 p.
m. Wednesday. February 28th.
Funderburke is being held in
the Mecklenburg County jail
without privilege of bond
pending a preliminary hearing.
No date has been set for a
hearing.

The Rev. Curtis Vance Mc-
Carley, 43. minister of the
Balfour Baptist Church, died
Thursday following an accident
at his home on AshevillcHigh>
way U.S. 25.
McCarlqr and his sot were
spreading stone in the drive
way of their home with a dump
truck when the bed of the truck
became stuck. Van McCarley
told medical examiner Dr.
Kennth LUTourette his father
climbed between the bed of the
trudc and the frame to see what
was causing the jam. The bed
then fell pinning lus father for 15
minutes.
McCarley apparently died
instantly. Hestufered extensive
internal injuries and had
several fractures.
The Henderson County
Rescue Squad was called to the
scene, but McCarley's body was
freedfrom the truck inrior to the
squad's arrival.
The incident occured shortly
after 2 p.m.
McCarley became pastor at
Balfour Baptist Churdi seven
years ago. He saw the church
consbnictcd twice.
At the lime te came to the
church. The congregation was
meebng m uie basement of the
new buuding with the sanctuary
being copipleted. About a year
later the church was gutted by
fire and had to be rebuilt.
A fellowship hall has also
been completer since McCarley
came to Balfour Batpist and the
bus ministry bt^an.
Rev. McCarlqy was a native
of Iva, S.C.. and was the son of
the Rev. and Mrs. Guy W.
McCarley, both of whom are
surviving. He was a graduate of
North Greenville Junior
College. Furman University,
and Southwestern Theological
Baptist Seminary at Fort Sorth,
Texas. McCarlcy did graduate
work at the Luther Rice
Seminar)' in Jacksonville. Fla.
and was an ordained Baptist
minister for 26 years.
He served in the pulpits at
Coxe Chapel in Marietta, S.C.;
Oak Grove Baptist Church,
Landrum. S.C.; First Baptist
Church, Cbwpens, S.C.: and
ser\-ed for five years as an
evangelist in Myrtle, Miss.
Since coming to Balfour he
remained an acti\x' fwangelist
conducting 20-25 revivals per
year across the nation.
He was well known here,
having conducted six or eight
revivals at Turrenline Baptist
Church and at North
Cooleemee.

Davie Man Found Dead In Prison
Tho body of an Ifi-ycar-old
inmate was found hanging
Friday niglit in his room at the
McHica) Center Hospital at
Central Prison in Raleigh.
Prison officials identified the
man as FInyd Everette James
of Mucksville.
Officials said James was
hanging by a sheet lied to the
top of the door to his room. He
was pronounced dead at 8 p. m.
by a prison doctor.
James had been sent to the
prison by the sentencing Judge
in Davidson County for
diagnostic study before sen
tencing. He had been convicted
of nonfclonious breaking and
entering.
A prison spokesman said
yesterday iliai James was alone
in his room in the mental health
facility and that the door was
locked when his body was
discovered. There was no in
dication of foul play, officials
said.

at Eaton's Funeral Chapel at
Mocksville. Burial was in
Bethel Cemetery in Forsyth
County.
Mr. James was born in
Rowan County to Floyd E. and

former furniture worker.

died of natural causes. He had
been in declining health for
some time.

to volunteer work, was buried
at 11 a.m. today in Salem
Cemetery.
. Mr. Martin was one of the
key volunteers of the Winston-.
Salem Blood Bank and often
was on call 24 hours a day.
He also undertook projects with
the Optimists Club, of which he
was a longtime member.
He had been in poor health
much of his life and friends say
he spent most of his time being
of assistance to others. He lived
with his mother at 744 Arbor
Road. His late father was an
attorney here for many years.
He attended the U. S. Military
Academy ^ at West Point and
Duke University.
He helped to organize the
Winston-Salem Bachelors' Club
and was a charter member. He
also was a member of Centenary
United Methodist Church and
Old Town Club.
Survivors include his mother
of the home; two sisters, Mrs.
Vance Field of Newport News,
Va., and Mrs. Louis Owen of
Key Biscayne, Fla.
He died Saturday at his home.

Morgan and was educated in
Davic County and Forsyth
County Schools. She also at
tended Winslon-Salcm State
University. For 23 years, she
was employed in the Davie
County &hool system.
She was a member of Smith
Grove AME Zion Church.

Zion Church Road.
Thomasville. and a sister of
Clyde O. Brewer. Jr. of
Mocksville, died Thursday
morning. June 21. at Com
munity General Hospital in
Thomasville. She had been
critically ill four days.
Funeral services were held
Saturday at Hughes Grove
Baptist Church. Burial was in
the church cemetery.
Mrs. Workman was bom In
Davidson County to Clyde O.
and Nannie Mae LoRin Brewer.
She was a member of Hughes
Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband.
Varis L. Workmen; two
daughters, Mrs. Perry Cecil of
High Point, and Mrs. Waymon
Skecn of Thomasville, Rt. 2;
two sons, Darrcll and Rickie
Workman of Thomasville: her
father of Thomasville: five
sisters. Mrs. Paul Payne, Sirs.
Benny Byeriy, Mrs. Unford
Stlnson, Mrs. Johnnie Sneed
and Miss Debbie Brewer of
Thomasville; and seven
brothers. Richard, Harold,
Ronnie, Danny and Harley
Brewer of Thomasville. and
Kenneth Brewer of High Point.

Man Drowns
A 33-year-old Lexington
resident. Tony Ray Langston of
604 Adam Street, was drowned
late fiaturday night in Hi^
Rock Lake in Davidson County.
Mr. Langston. formerly of
Davie County, was a nejdiew of
Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Bvcrhardt of
Route 4 and Rev. and Mrs. Bill
Qvason of Cooleemee.
The Davidson County
shprlfCs department reported
Uuigsion's fishing boat over
turned after hitting a rock
Saturday night about 10:00.
Members of the Rowan and
Davidson County Resue Squads
assisted in the operation of
seeking to recover thebudynf the
victim, who was an employee of
S and W Motor Lines in
Greensboro. He was the Baptist
faith.
