50-Years With Southern Railway
John Stokes Haire was born on a small
form in Yadkin County, May 2tst, 1891.
His formal education consisted of
common school and an equivalent of iwo
years of high school.
At the age of 18 he went to work In
Wlnslon-Salem at Arista Mills. After a
short time In Winalon-Salem he ac
cepted a Job in a small country store In
Surry County. This job proved vei7
eventual for Haire as he made
acquQlntanceB with o lot of young folks
ona customera who became his friends.
Also. It was white woHcIng in this store
that he decidt-Kl he would like to learn
telegraphy.
John Haire procured two glass jars,
two copper crow feel, some blue
stone....and by filling the jars with water
nnH hanging the copper feet therein, (he
so-called wet batteries generated enough
electric current to manlpuiotc a small
tclegroph practice set.
Realizing he needed a lot of practice
and personal instruction, this youth
prevailed on the railroad agent at
Crulchfield to allow him to enter the
station as a student-helper, and without
pay of course.
The agent accepted him and in November I9il he entered Into this field.
In March 1912, the agent at Rockford. C.A. Houch. was accidentally shot and
was partially disabled for some months. Needing someone around the station
with the privilege of learning telegrai^y and station accounting, the Job was
offered John Haire. The pay was his room, board and laundry... and was gladly
accepted
On August 12.1912, although yet not a good telegrapher. John Haire decided it
was time for him to try for a job with some railroad. He decided to go to Rocky
Mount and try to get on with the Atlantic Coastline. Enroule he stopped In
Wlnslon-Salem and asked the chief dispatcher, 6. P. Ketcham, for work.
Following an examination on rules, telegraphy. etc. John Haire was llned-up for
a job as relief-telegrapher. The next week he was sent to Belhania, a small
station north of Winston-Salem, and relieved the regular ogeni who wanted
some lime off
After several such relief Jobs, here and there, a vacancy occurred at Crul
chfield and John Haire became agent there on January I. 1913. He held this
position until December 1,1923, when he bid In the Job at Mocksvllla succeeding
G.A. Allison who had decided to take the newly created position of clerk-
telegrapher at the same station.
John Haire served as agent ct the Mocksville depot for 40 yeorsand retired In
1083 after 50 years of continuous service with Southern Railway.
For the past is years John Haire has devoted himself to his family, hobbies
and friends. He enjoyed gardening end fishing. He was a member of the
Mocksville Masonic Lodge and the First Baptist Church.

A Davie County woman was
Mlied Saturday In Rowan

Ford four-wheel drive vehicle

at the 2:20 p.m. accident, as
told to the inveaUgatlng of-
