He was educated in the Winston-Salem public schods and attended both N.C. State University and Wake Forest University. He served in the' Korean Conflict. Advance (currenUy living in Clem- mons) was charged Tuesday with the first degree shooting death of his brother, Joseph Clay Howard, 38, also of Rt 1 Advance. The shooting took place about 3:80 P.RL. at the WUdwood Farm, a beef eattlff«fanh oR the PlhovlUe Road, wlwre the two brothers worked as handymen. The brothers had been talking with Charlie MarshaD, owner of the farm, when an argument develcmed between Sam Howard and Marshall over salary allegedly due Sam Howard, It was reported Uiat Sam Howard threatened MarshaU and then got Into a car to leave. As the care, driven, by Richard Lee McDonougb Jr. 17, of US 158 Clemmmis, pulled away a aingle shot was fired from the vehicle. Joeeph Clay Howard died instantly of a wmmd In the head from a .32 caliber automatic pistol. Marshall, who was standing next to Howard, was not injured. Sam Howard was arrested in Clem* mons approximately 48 minutes after the incident by Deputy Jim Hunter of Davie and Forsyth County dejnities. In addition to the first degree murder charge. Sam Howard was diarged with assault with a deadly weapon with at tempt to inflict serious injury on Charlie MarshalL Jfe is being held in the Davie CounW Jail without bond. McDcnough, the driver of the car, was charged Tuesday with accessory after- the-faet of murder. At approximately 8:30 p.m.. He was born Octt^r 4,1911 in Davie County to the late Grecly and Jennie S. Peebles. He was a member of the Mt. Sinai A.M.E. Zion Church and was married to the late JancttQ Ellis, who preceeded him in death on October 22, 19S7. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Vandella McMoore. DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD, THURSDAY, JULY 26,1979 -1 and 10 Davie'a 6th Highway Fatality Driver Dies In Accident After Hitting Mule Jerry Thomas Tulberl, 20, of Rt. 1 Mocksville died at the scene of an ac cident last Thursday night on U.S. 64,10 miles west of Mocksville. Tulbert's 1975 Toyota was heading east on U.S. 64 when it hit a mule in the easthound lane about It p.m. The Toyota then went Into the westbound bne and collided with a 1874 Pontiac driven by Milled Hall Paster of Mocksville. The Toyota overturned, pinning Tulberl tteneath the car. Ms. Foster was treated for minor injuries at the Oavie County Hospital and released. The mule was destroyed because of extensive injuries. This was Davie County's sixth high way fatality of 1979. Jerry Thomas Tulberl was born January 4,1959 in Iredell County, the son of Mrs. Louise Qodbey Allen of Rt. i MocksvlUe and Thomas R. Tulberl of Troulmsn. He was a 1977graduate of the Davie County High Schoru where he was an active member of the chorus and other singing groups. At an early age be joined the Davie Academy 4-H Club and became an outstanding member earning top honors in various fields. He was an active member of the Salem United Methodist Church and was choir member ol the First United Methodist Church of Mocksville. Following graduation from the Davie High School, he completed a course in auto^esel mechanics at a school in Nashville, Tenn. and was employed at the i-40 "ttactor ano Implemenl Com pany of SlatesviUe. He attended school at night and was completing a real estate course. He was returning front attending one of these classes at the time of the accident. Duke Whifaker The funeral for Duke LeGrand Whittaker, 71, of 1030 Yedklnville Road, Mocksville, was held Monday afternoon at Eaton's Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Charles Bullock officiated. Burial with full Masonic rites was in the Bear Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. Whittaker died early Saturday morning at the Davie County Hospital. He had been in declining health for several years. Born November 13, 1907, in Davie County, he was the son of the late John and Molly Parrish Whittaker. Before retiring he was with the personnel department of Hanes Hosiery Company for 46 years. He was a member of the Mocksville First Baptist Church and a past master of the Mocksville Masonic t^ge. He held many important committee assign ments for the annual Masonic Picnic until terminal illness struck several years ago. He was an active participant in county and local affairs. IS. of Rt. 2 Advance had been to a restaurant and were returning to their homes eariy Sunday morning. According to Slate Highway Pa trolman A.C. Stokee, Burton, the driver, was headed to polts' home via the Underpass Road when he encountered a turrlcade and a road closed sign about four miles weal of Advance. Burton drove around the obataclcs and suddenly found the car In deep water ae they approached a bridge over Carter's Creek which had overflowed Ita banks. I^car floated Inloeven deeper water to the side of the road in a field, where all three pasaengers managed to get out of the car. Only Mi. Matthews knew how to ■wlm. She awam ashore to seek help. Potts and Burton could only hold to the car and apparently sank with it. Davle County Rescue S<)uad, aided by divers from Forsyth County, searched for the bodies until about 4 a.m. and resumed iheir search after dayllghi. Burckhalter and the Rev. H.E. May, Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. May was born in Vadkin County to Robert and Nan Cuthreli May. He was a retired mechanic from the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Va. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Fleets Baity May: four daughters, Mra. Norman Joan Chlllon, Mra. Sylvia Gwynn. Mrs. Charlene Moreland, and Mrs. Mary Louise York, ail of Greensboro; two brothers Willis May of Winston-Salem and Henry Elinon May of Pilot Mountain; eight grandchildren; one gieot- child.
