Roberts, Pastor ["^hese historical sketches could not have been prepared without the gracious assistance of Mrs. Grace Langston who has recorded much of the history of this congregation from its beginnings. Her notes are the primary source for these efforts at reporting our history. (DER)J. Green Meadows Baptist Church came into being out of the concerns of a group of people who were at that time members of the Yadkin Valley Baptist Church. In a time of strife^ within that congregation, seventy-three individuals withdrew from that fellowship on June 25, 1967. On that date the group met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sam^ Austin and made the decision to begin a new Baptist work on the eastern side of Davie County. As a result of that meeting of June 25, a Sunday School was organized and began to function on July 9, 1967. A The formal organization of Green Meadows Baptist Church occurred on July 23, in a private home near the intersection of Highway 801 and Redland Road which is presently the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Vance Riddle. An organizing council was formed by pastors and deacons from neighboring churches and included Rev. Fred Barnes of First Baptist Church in Mocksville, Rev. Claxton Hall of the Clemmons First Baptist Church, Rev. J. C. Shore, Assoclational Missionary of the Yadkin Baptist Association, and Rev. Lewis Ludlum, Associational Missionary for the Pilot Mountain Baptist Association. Almost one-hundred people attended the S service of organization. £9 o 2: Following the service of organization and the reception of members, the church ^ j" elected its first officers. These included the following: Gray Matthews, Sunday ^ ^ School Superintendent; Sam Austin, Church Clerk; Fletcher Williard, Jr, Sunday ^ ^ School Secretary; Lawrence Riddle, Treasurer; Henry N. Williams, Ray Hendrix, g g - and Joe Langston, Trustees. The first deacons were elected on August 20, 1967, lu ^ o and were Ray Hendrix, Joe Langston, and Gray Matthews. In a drawing of straws > Joe Langston was selected as chariman. These were ordained on September 17. § Qj Rev. Alvis C. Cheshire of Mocksville was called as the first pastor by vote of the church on July 30, and he began his work immediately serving in a bi-vocational capacity working also for Heritage Furniture. He had previously served the Yadkin ^ Valley Baptist Church for sixteen years prior to his resignation there in early June ^ of 1967. His wife, Mrs. Gladys Cheshire, was responsible for suggesting the name ^ Green Meadows after seeing the five-acre site donated by Mr. and Mrs. John F. Sparks upon which the church was to be built. The color green was also to be a reminder of gro^h as Christ's commission was fulfilled by the members. In addition to the ^ land given, other early gifts included a piano from Mrs. Bryant of Farmington,a pulpit, communion table and two offering plates from Heritage Furniture, a communion ^ service from Mrs. Beulah Carter and Rev. and Mrs. Cheshire, and a pulpit Bible from Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Wheeler. I The erection of a first unit building that mow serves as our educational building . V) was begun with the pouring of a footing on August 31, 1967. The building was erected ^ largely by the members who volunteered their time and efforts. Block and brick work^ were completed by October 6, and the cornerston was laid on Sunday, October 15. A number of items were enclosed in that cornerstone including a worn Bible belonging O to Rev, Cheshire and a number of handwritten notes from various members. a I The initial services held in Green Meadows' first building were conducted on December 10, 1967, and the congregation celebrated being in dry and warm quarters despite a driving rain outside, a crowd of 127 came to worship to hear Associational Missionary J. C, Shore's message on "What Kind of Church Do I Want my Church to Be?" The form^ dedication was held on March 31, 1968, when the church celebrated being debt-free on the original building. .The first anniversary was celebrated with a picnic at the church and an ice cream supper following evening worship. Green Meadows Baptist Church was received under watchcare by the Yadkin Baptist Association at it's 1967 sessions. Following a vote on September 15, 1968, reaffirming the decision to formally enter the association, the church was received into full fellowship in the association on October 24, 1968. The ninety-six members sent Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Williams, Mr Clyde Boger, Mrs. Ernest McKnight, Mrs. Lawrence Riddle, and Mrs. Joe Langston as messengers to that meeting to receive the hand of fellowship from the Yadkin Association. The church has remained active in and supportive of associational, state convention, and Southern Baptits work since that time. On January 26, 1969, Rev. Alvis Cheshire resigned as pastor. The marks of his leadership remain visible in the congregation's life to this day. Following his * resignation, the church was able to secure the services of Rev. Hubert K. Middleton, furloughing Southern Baptist Missionary to Chile, who served as interim pastor. During his service with the church, the first cht)ir robes were secured, and Mrs. Middleton led in the beginning of a church library. When the Middleton family returned to Chile, Green Meadows secured a gas stove and a number of other gifts for their use on the mission field. In July, 1969, a block utility building was constructed and a.lighted church sign was begun. After service to the congregation for five months as interim pastor. Rev. Walter Warfford of Winston-Salem was called as pastor on November 23, 1969* He assumed the work one week later. Under his leadership a picnic shelter was begun in April, 1970, and completed in time for the church's third anniversary. This was later enclosed and heated in 1972 to provide fellowship space for year-round use. The congrgation's fourth anniversary in 1971 featured Rev. Nathan Brooks of the Baptist State Convention in Raleigh. As the church continued to grow during 1973 and 1974, most attentions were centered upon the need to consturct an auditorium and additional classroom space. By May, 1974, the total membership had reached 154. A design from the architectural firm of Design Associates of Statesville was accepted, and on July 21, 1974, the congregation accepted the contract of McLain Construction ' Company of Kernersville for a $170,000 construction project to provide the needed facilities. To finance this construction and needed furnishings, the church raised 2 $50,000 in its building fund and Issued $135,000 in revenue bonds for a term of ^ fourteen and one-half years. Ground was broken on August 11, 1974, and the first >- OL S CO _J Ui £ <J d X , xJ o z o LU -J DO ■D > Ol CO d o O o UJ > c a ^ service held in the facilities was December 14, 1975, just over eight years after the £2 first service in the church's initial facilities. Dedication services were held^ ^ February 15, 1976, and Dr.- Forrest C. Feezor of Shelby was guest speaker. ^ On Sunday, May 1, 1977, Rev. Walter Warfford resigned as pastor effective as ^ of May 15. His seven and one-half years of service are remembered as a time of ^ growth and as a time of physical building for the congregation. At the time of his ^ departure, the church reflected a total membership of 195. Rev. Burley Turner^ of Clemmons served in interim until December 18, 1977, and helped to bind the membership together and move the church toward the next steps that were taken. lA o cL :E n O On November 6, 1977, the congregation voted to call Rev. David E. Roberts from the Parkton Baptist Church, Parkton, North Carolina. His acceptance was read November 20, and he and his wife Dawn moved to the community being the first pastor to live on the church field. He began his v/ork, December 25, 1977, and a formal installation was held January 1, 1978. During the summer of 1978 a series of outdoor Sunday Nights Under the Stars were started with experiences ranging from melon murders to snakey visitations. Also During 1978, community survey work was started to locate additltional persons whom the church should reach. A Lay Evangelism School was conducted in October, 1978. On October 19, 1978, Green Meadows was host for the first time to a session of the Yadkin Baptist AssocJaaon, Taping services for a limited tilpO ministry also began that fall. On the twelfth anniversary in July, 1979, the first Total Victory Offering for early bond retirement was received. A goal of $2,500 was far surpassed as members shared over $5,800 for this purpose. New equipment donated that year also made possible a Christian Film Festival during October. In December, 1979, Green Meadows began to share a rotating broadcast of morning worship over WDSL in Mocksville. During 1980 major attention v/as given to the revising of the church constitution and tlie beginning of a fully graded children's choir program. Also, during July, the church began participating in a shared worship ministry for inmates at the Davie County Unit of the North Carolina Division of Prisons. At"the thirteenth anniversary Rev. Alvis Cheshire was present and spoke briefly to the congregation for the last time prior to his death. In October, 1980, Dr. Mahan Siler, Director of the School of Pastoral Care at North Carolina Baptist Hospital led the church's first Family Life Conference. Also, for the first time three Backyard Bible Clubs were conducted in comm unity neighborhoods. It is hoped that these historical sketches will help us to better understand who we are both in terms of our roots and in terms of the course along which God has brought us. There is much to celebrate from these fifteen years, and there is ^ much to dare and to venture as God leads us onward. "Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever" (Jude 24-25). 3 During April, 1981, the church participated with other Yadkin Baptist Association g ^ churches in a World Missions Conference. A record Vacation Bible School enrolling 2 185 was held in June. Pastor David Roberts served as General Chairman for the o Davie County Crusade for Christ during September, 1981. Also, limited renovations m ^ were carried out in the educational building to provide more adequate classrooms for q_ ^ some of our groups. In addition, the church in conference adopted a goal of being ^ § debt-free no later than December 31, 1984. In October, 1981, the following yearly o g information was reported to the association: ^ Resident members, 220 g Non-resident members, 14 Total membership, 234 Property values, $325,000 Sunday School enrollment, 214 Music enrollment, 41£■' W.M.U. enrollment, 64 R.A. enrollment, 142 Total receipts, $61,890 Events of the Green Meadows Baptist Church Pages 4-17 to 2 0 Q <s: C 1 ui > »- to V- O- <*: cO Davie County Public Library Mocksville, North Carolina u> S. o i£> X- O ' b- r a c t o * VT ^ c o u c i I Ne w Pa s t o r Ch o s e n By ^ Gr e e n Me a d o w s Ba p t i s t Ck u- r c h e s Th e Re v . When vve got to Honduras and gave him that chair, you oitght to have seen his face when lie saw that wheelchair. It's hard to explain how that feels." Re.avis said, getting quiet for a moment. When asked if he believes God has sent him to do this work, he said. "Yes. 1 think so." Oairfe Count)' PudIic i fv'ocksviile, KC - DAVIE COUN TY EN'rERPHlSK.
