I had been sick for several weeks and had become very weak, when one night my wife had finished her work and came in.the room and sat down near the firs". I tried to set up but was so " weak I could not. So I went back to .bed and the last thing I knew I saw my self standing on the south side of a square field and the field was aet out in fruit trees in perfect rows with each tree burdened with its fruit. I then r saw a carriage all of gold, that resembled a small house on wheels. The door of the house was open and over the door was fine metal of carved work. Also there were wings spread each way and three steps which led up into the house. It all appeared as solid gold. I was then placed on the second step when I saw two blue steel sickles, one standing east and the other west. The carriag or small house then moved north directly through the field the sickles on each side cutting down all the trees leaving nothing standing. It seamed a great grief to ma that such beautiful trees should be cut Z down and all the fruit destroyed. I than woke up realized where l was. and 0 * T ^ told my wifa I had to die for I felt I had been warned of death. P I got up and walked around the room holding to the chairs and again came tf baok to bad whan I was placed again In the aama field whara the fruit trees 1 ware. But now there was nothing but a great hole In the earth,-and the t-nsmy .. i that was to destroy me was coming out of the earth In the form of yellow • 15 ^ati 01 Oavie" County PuDHc LiDfaty Mocksvllie, NO -3- jackets as thick as they could Tly, and were coming as arrows dart towards tt I felt I was gone, but just before they struck me angels from heaven came dc in an innumerable host and made a ring around me so the d/yemy could only str the angels, but they did not fear them. I came to my mind and raised up in bed and these words were spoken to me saying, "All flesh is as grass. The s is no sooner risen with a burning heat than the grass withered and ths flowe thereof falleth away;" and to preach the everlasting gospel'to a perishing people. The fear of death then was all gone and the glory of the Lord fille my soul. I commenced talking to my wife and preaching Christ and his kingdo and bless your soul dear child of God, what a feast of joy it was to me. My neighbors .gathe-7-ed in and I preached to them and 1 soon got well when 1 woul preach salvation by grace to everybody I met. My neighbors soon reported me crazy. At this time I was living about fourteen miles from any Primitive Baptist Church. On one occasion at our regular meeting I was present and our pastor failed to b e with us. The brethren asked me to come forward and organize conference. I told them I could not but they kept pleading with me until I finally agreed to go and tr* It was there I received great consolation. I served in this way for about two years, when in the fall of 1889 I dreamed I was traveling to a city in a road that was beautiful and level, j had traveled until I became so tired 1 could hardly make a step when I came a very old and rotten looking barn. The door stood open and J- stepped up anc saw aome old rotten hay in the barn. I went in, lay down on the hay and wen: to sleep. And while 1 slept the fowls of the air came into. the'barh'and ate ^ all the flesh from off my right leg. Prom my knee down there was nothing le: I hut the bone and leaders. And I know this while I was asleep, because while still asleep -I- dreamed I woke up and felt 1 was ruined. I then thought I t would move my leg and succeeded in doing so, but it was awfully weak. At fir <5 i& 0awe County PuDdo Ubrarv . ". . Ho aeew. .Mocksvilie, NC n -4- I could only take very short steps, but the more 1 tried the better 1 could walk, and..;the flesh began to come on the bone of my leg until finally all the riesh cam^; back and my leg was whole again. 1 then traveled over this beaut iful road; in joy and gladne_ss. ' Ohe more 1 walked the more I could walk, and the more, glorious it was until i awoke when behold it was all a dream. Then I began to wonder what did this mean. Surely this is a sentence of condemnati against me and it is-possible I have acted a hypocrite for the pest two years and oh Lord if so, forgive me. 1 now thought I never would stand before the public any more and felt I.was down forever, and that I had brought condemnation against myself and shame upon ray wife and children. I moved from Davidson to Davie county, where' I rented a farm and put my bible in the bureau drawer where I could not see it when I was in the house. I went in sorrow and tsars often and at that time I would rather be alone than to be with any one, although after the first year the burden became lighter. The scriptures somewhat left my mind, still the impression remained with me. 1 began to think about the latter part of the third year that the impression to preach the gospel would leave me before much longer. But this was not the case, the impression returned with more weight and increased more and more. * •;/ In the latter part of the fourth year when it seemed J- could no longer endure my trouble I gave up for lack of strength, and once more turned to my Bible as a poor helpless sinner in the valley of darkness and' shadow of death nd wi^h a feeling to say, return, oh Lord, for I am in trouble, such trouble as is i^t common to man. Altogether of a carnal mind, I was afraid to go to' church and try to speak in the name of Christ, for fear I was, not called and I was afraid not to go and try. I have plowed the field and preached in thought from one end of the field to the other and cried and preached night and day., j have aroused my wife and children many nights, and they would talk to me . and try to get me to hush! I was in this condition for more than tw5 n 0^\ia County Puouc uoiary -5- Mocksvilie, NC years, when one Sunday morning went to the cook room where my wife was pre paring the morning meal, and Just as I stepp:ed up to the. stove i was struck helpless and as I fell ahe_and my two oldest sons caught me and carried me out into the yard where I could get air. one said, get a doctor. But 1 told them not to, for J- had to die, as I had lived in rebellion against God. 'However, they got the doctor'anyway, but I could walk before he came. ' ile gave r medicine and told me my "blood was out of order. I began to go often to my church meeting and when Elder J. A. Burch, the pastor, would preach, I coul.d not help from crying, and when he had finished preaching he would ask me to select a hymn and talk some and organize conf- erance. I would always tell him ^ could not, and when meeting w«s over, oh what a burden was on me.' J-t seemed more than I coiad bear. I traveled in thJ.s condition for about five years, when on Saturday night Defore the fourth Sunday in March, 1896, or Just before day, 1 raised up in bed.and my wife asked, what in the world is . the matter with you? i .told i.- I did not know what was the matter. But I must serve the Lord or die. I ^^ot up and after 1 had done my Sunday morning-s work I left the house and went about a o.uarter of a mile to a lonesome place and knelt down and prayed to the Lord to relieve me. My prayers seemed not to rise higher than my head. X went still further and knelt down and prayed for mercy. It seemed my words fell to the earth. I got up and went still further across the plantation into a deep hollow and prayed to the Lord, and .in my prayers these wcr ds came in ay mind., "oh Father, have mercy on meynd forgive me for the way I have-lived and make my way prosper in thy name If thou hast called me as • a servant of his boly covenant, I would deny thee no more." This is the first verse I want to call your attention, what is contained in this one verse. First, this is the God of heaven that speaks, not the man, but the spirit of God in man. It is the sam that speaks to Jacob, that created him, and tells him that he had formed him and God speaks to Jacob, as in the singular, as one by saying, but now, thus saitb the Lord that created thee, o Jacob. The word "thee" means one in the singular. The word means in the plural, thus meaning a number more or less, Jacob is only one in the consideration, Israel is one only in the considerati Bow what lio we understand about the two. Jacob is created and Jacob is for med. Let us illustrate it in this way. we will take one grain of corn. In this one grain is the heart. The one grain is planted in the earth. Through the act of moisture of the. earth the life of the grain develops and puts forti a stalk. It grows end in process of time a number of grains are brought xortb. This is a formation of a number of grains, and nofa creation of them .of their coming forth. But one were in all the created grain. So in like manner was Israel all in the one created Jacob, or the one nan Jesus Christ oi which Jacob was a type. Jacob was a natural man dnd was the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. • As a natural people was a type of spiritual Israel. . Bow Jacob was a house or temple which God dwelt in. God says again I will walk in them and I will dwell in them, and they sAall be my'people, and I will j, be .their God. Christ was a spirit of life in Jacob, and was to be made manife T M •^ in the formation of Israel, and the Lord said to Jacob, fear not for I have 2 redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.' The word "Thee" ^ Is.pointedly called four times in this verse of scripture. The creation, the » formation, the redemption, the name. So then God created them, he formed then ^ ©. redeemed them, he called them by name and said to them thou art mine, and XI tr> W I -8- CJod leads them alonr andana multiplies them and bleasea ^ ^ vh«T> ^ ^ ^ esses them and delivers themwhen in deep waters and ^I' ers and in fiery furnaces, and when th« ^ rh-n^^i- 4.^ V V ® near for God shall eive him -i-k 4.u S -t. for the Lordgive him the throne of hie father David, and he shal^ re,. house of Jacob and nr >,4 w ~ over the th. .h.Pch .f ^ Is the nlace of mv res- hath t .7 es., hath not my hand made all these things' M Pl.c„ and the valley of death Cr.^ , n ®j or a..th Cos I, via rop t. r-nd you and I will loo>v- .34 soui,—n obedience through suffering, and in the a lasting life. ® ° W» T« Broadway wVr"T '■ '•■»■> "".1 r '« ' -'P.. .»d «.U to .ook or t..1^0.07 Of to. ,o,p.l. Church records, land deeds, and conference meeting minutes as well as recollections of members were used to compile the information. The Author Bob Hooven v d. O •o •2 i (P f- o <C <£3 ) vn ti) % o ai £ tj The first recorded meeting, in the new church house, was on Monday, April 13, 1896. There were several meetings conducted, at No Creek Church by the arm of Pine Primitive Baptist Church, after this date and prior to being constituted. Saturday before the second Sunday in May of1896 at Pine Primitive Baptist Church, Davidson County, NC, it was deemed "necessaiy for the good of the cause of Christ and the comfort and convenience of a portion for her membership" to organize another church house in Davie County, NC. This meeting house came to be known as No Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Brethren and Sisters desiring to be constituted into a church met at No Creek Church on Saturday before the fifth Sunday of August, 1896. Moderator, Elder T.S. Hall, "delivered to them the charge and pronounced them a church in gospel order." Elder J.C. Williams was called to serve as pastor. There were 14 members: W.T. Broadway and wife M.L. Broadway Henry Monsees and wife Louisa N. Monsees William D. Snider and wife Margaret L. Snider J.H. Deadmond and wife Elizabeth Deadmond M.S. Forrest M.A. Young ^ S.E. Forrest ^ J.A. Forrest ^ Franklin Burriage • Harriet Yantz cr Co The church adopted the same Articles of Faith and Rules of Decorum as Pine Primitive Baptist Church. The church selected the third Sunday of each month for their regular morning service and Saturday before the third Sunday for conference meetings. 2- j Over the next few decades, several changes occurred in regard to the days of the month that services and conferences took place. In May, 1898, ^ I conference meetings were rescheduled to Friday before the second Sunday, ^ but their regular morning service remained on the third Sunday. In July, o .CL> \r> ^ B nocreek.bwh j, lO *: s> <3^ ■cJ 75PP, conference meetings were changed back to Saturday before the third Sunday. In May, 1916, conference meetings were re-scheduled to Saturday before the fourth Sunday. Although the church records do not clearly indicate the day of the regular Sunday service, it may be assumed that the meeting time moved to the fourth Sunday. While in conference, the fourth Saturday of January, 1965, the church voted to have an additional worship service on the second Sunday night of each month. Five years later in April, the church members agreed to change the night service to a morning service. The first recording of communion was on the third Sunday of October, 1896. However, it was not until the third Sunday of May, 1912, that the records included feet washing during communion service. The current meeting schedule at No Creek Church is as follows: • Conference meeting-l:30 PM, Saturday before the fourth Sunday in each month. • Regular worship services-10:20 AM, second and fourth Sundays • Communion and feet washing- fourth Sunday afternoon in May and September. The church has been members of two different associations through the years; Abbotts Creek Association from August 1897 to May 1910 and Salem Association from October 1912 to July 1934. REAL-ESTATEAND MEETING HOUSE HISTORY The meetinghouse faces Aubrey Merrell road, one quarter mile north of highway 64, approximately four miles east ofMocksville, NC. The church was named after a creek located one half mile to the east. It has been said that the creek was without a name for so long that local folks started calling 1896 April 13—One-acre of land on which No Creek Church stands was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. J.F. Gnibb at a cost of $25. However, according to the deed, the church had been built sometime prior to this date. \ ^ Docreek.bwh o -5O o it No Creek. ^ <D I • ' 1950 November 13-The church made the second land purchase of 45/100 acre that adjoined the church property at a cost of $10 from Mr. and Mrs. Spencer B. Hanes. 1952 October—Electric lights were installed. 1961 July 28-Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Hendrix sold No Creek Church 4/100 acre that adjoined the church property at a cost of $1. 1964 August—Central heating system was installed. 1966 November—No Creek Road was paved. 1968 May-Several structural changes to the church included a brick addition to encase the bathrooms, as well as the central door entrance. 1971 January-The church replaced the pews, added carpet, and installed paneling. 1970 September—Baptist Bible Hour, which was supported by members of No Creek church, was first broadcast on WDSL radio station in Mocksville, N.C. 1972 September—Brick was added to the building, as well as new hymnals. 1974 April-Tenth edition songbooks replaced the ninth edition hymnals. 1978 April-Air-conditioning was added to the building. 1979 March—P.A. system was added to the building. 1991 November-The church upgraded to the eleventh edition hymnals. 1994 September-The church built a baptismal pool adjacent to the building.
