Four delegates from Clement
Grove Church of God, Seventh
Day in Mocksville attended the
20th convention of their sister
church in Kingston, Jamaica
April 17-22.
The theme of the convention
was. "Whose Report Do You
Believe?, selected from Isaiah
53:1.
Attending the trip were
Lucille Ijames, Stephanie Ijames,
Dr. Regina Graham-Hauser and
her husband Raphael Hauser, all
of Mocksville. Each of the
delegates performed a specific
role during the con-ference.
Lucille Ijames presented a
seminar on the importance of
reading the Bible and getting the
cosrect understanding.
Stephanie Ijames presented a
seminar on interpersonal
, .communication. She was also a
soloist during the conference.
Dr. Regina Graham-Hauser
and her husband Raphael
volunteered as teachers for the
children.
"We took materials for 50
kids, but we actually had at least
70 children between the ages of
3 and 12. That's a lot of children
to work with on a daily basis,
especially teaching in extreme
heat - upper 90s with high
humidity," she said. "But the
children were very attentive and
eager to learn.
"Their classes were held
outside with no tables or other
amenities that we are accustomed
to in the United States. Their
regular teachers use Bibles to
teach their lessons," said
Graham-Hauser.
Ihe popular beaches and
resorts in Jamaica give a
particular picture of the country.
"When you visit a place like
Kingston and reside with the
native people, you really get a
true feel for the island," she said.
" They make do with so much
less than what most of us have at
our churches.
"However, they are very
knowledgeable about God's
. word and joyfully express
themselves through testimony. |
singing, and spiritual dancing,"
said Graham-Hauser.
Raphael Hauser taught the
children one of his favorite songs.
"My Lord and I." He and Regina :
provided the supplies and helped i
the children make several crafts, i
including Bible bookmarks, •
umbrellas con-veying the '
I message that we are covered by
God's love, and necklaces that
read. "I will obey God."
"1 was impressed with how
bright the children were."
Raphael said., "They asked
questions about everything -
from government to haircuts.
Their discussion of U.S. troops
in Iraq and other intuitive
comments from the children let
us know that the entire world is
. jyatching the United States. And
that'ls an important message
Americans should remember as
we live our lives," said Hauser.

the late Julia Ijames and her
husband, the late Elder Loice
Ijames, former overseer of
Clement Grove Church of God
Seventh Day on Parker Road,
Mocksville. Loice Ijames was
also a brother to Lucille Ijames,
one of the delegates who attended
this year's convention.
Ijames and his wife Julia
worked with several Jamaican
brethren and established the
church in 1969. The pastor at that
time was Elder E.D. McDonald,
now deceased.
As the church grew, the
location moved twice and was
permanently settled at 71
Homestead Road in 1971. The
first convention was held in
1983.
Also in 1983, one of the
members, Evelyn McClaughlin,
moved from Kingston to
Thompson Town. Jamaica. She
immediately began working on
forming a congregation in her
area. She received a lot of help
from the late Elder Ivan W.
Ijames, formerpastorqf Clement
Grove Church of God in
Mocksville, along with Elder
Vincent and Dir^ Walters, and
Millicent Palmer? ail of King
ston.
A small congregation began
meeting at Mrs. McClaughlin's
home. As the membership in
Thompson Town grew, the
Kingston congregation
purchased land to build a church.
The existing church in Thompson
Town, Clarendon was built in
1992 and an expansion took place
In 1997.
Elder Vincent Walters is the
pastor of the church in Kingston
and also Thompson Town.
Each year, representatives
from Mocksville and Randleman
visit their sister congregations in
Kingston and Thompson Town.
Elder William Harwell of
Randleman is the overseer of all
four churches within the Church
of God organization.
Lucille Ijames and Stephanie
Ijames have visited the Jamaican
congregations on several
occasions, but it was a first-time
experience for Regina and
Raphael Hauser.
"The trip was much more than
a religious mission. We learned
a lot about the.history, language
(patois) and social culture of the
people," Regina said. "It was a
very meaningful experience that
I'll remember/for a long time,"
she said. ' ly
Raphael reflected on the
unique meal choices by stating,
"The pastor's wife/Dira, was a
very good hostess, cooking us
several Jamaican dishes,
including calalou, curried goat,
and jerk chicken. Manv of the
foods we ate were growing in
trees or gardens outside our
residence, including breadfruit,
mango, and ackee. We also had
fresh squeezed orange juice and
1 ate sugarcane on a daily basis."
Stephanie Ijamds empha
sized the poor economic con
dition of the country.
"One American dollar is
currently worth sixty-four
Jamaican dollars. To give you an
example of how expensive items
are, a three minute phone card
cost over $2," Ijames said.
"Being there touched me so much
because the entire congregation
seemed to be so spirit-filled. The
people don't have much to rely
on but God, so their faith in his
power is strong. Sometimes we
[Ameri-cans] take what we have
for granted."
"Our purpose for sharing our .
journey is to encourage others to
participate in mission work in
foreign lands. It is an experience
that will affect you for the rest of
your life. I took a suitcase filled
with teaching materials, games,
toys, etc. The suitcase was empty
returning home, but I brought
back a greater sense of who I am,
a renewed commit-ment to
serving God through serving
others, and a knowledge base that
can be \ised in many ways,"
Regina stated.

Special to the Enterprise
In the early 1930s, before the
Clement Grove church was
built, services were held in the
home of Daniel and Annie
Wilson, the home of Lessie
Ijames, the home of Johnnie
Ijames, all now deceased.
Services were also held at
Palmetto AME Zion Church on
U.S. 601 North in Mocksville.
At that time, the church did not
have a specific name.
John W. Clement of Mocks
ville owned quite a bit of land,
and when he died, designated
portions to be given to his
children.
The church group purchased
an acre that belonged to Amanda
Clement Woods for $100. Since
the church property was pur
chased fiom the Clement family,
the name Clement Grove
Church was established. Church
members recollect that it was
purchased in 1939, but records
in the Davie County Register of
Deeds have the property
recorded in 1943.
Once the land was pur
chased, it took about five years
to build up enough treasury to
begin construction.
The contractor in charge of
building was Carl James from
the Fairfield community. Wor
kers used terra cotta blocks to
build a sanctuary about 30- b50-
. feet in size.
The church members who
were instrumental in helping
with the building project were
James Rucker, Overseer Johnnie
Ijames, and Pastor Archie
Ijames. At that time Elder O.R.
Osmond was the general
overseer of the Church of God
Body of Christ Organization.
Land adjacent to the
sanctuary was purchased in
1965 and the church expanded.
Additions included bath
rooms, a new sanctuary, and the
old sanctuary became class
rooms.
In 2001, a building com
mittee was formed to address the
growing church population and
facility concerns.
Elder Raymond Robinson,
assistant pastor o, Leonard "BB"
Coulter Jr., and Dr. Regina
Graham-Hauser were the
committee members. They
established a building fund so
that members and friends could
make contributions towards a
new building. In a short amount
of time, enough funds were
raised to proceed with ex
panding the church.
