And members and the new pastor of Smith Grove AME . Zion Church are ready to move forward with plans to fiilly re store the historic building. Dewey Hunt, lay minister and member, said it is the oldest functioning church in davie County built of the old lumber. The church was founded in 1867 by former slaves, and was appropriately called Freedmans Church. The cemetery includes a slave cemetery with crudely marked stones. The church bought an acre of land, which was cleared and an arbor constructed. "They would have food and the gospel would be preached,"« r p.caciicu, said the Rev. Alvin E. Damon, the newest pastor. Members of the trustee board in 1867 in cluded Gilbert Johnson, Daniel Williams, John Machele and Rueben Benson. A building was constructed for what was then New Zion AME Zion Church, which was later changed to Smith Grove AME Zion. Like most congregations, the church has had ups and downs over the years. Damon and Hunt aren't only interested in restoring the building • they want to restore the flock. Some I0-I2 parishioners at tend on the average Sunday. "The Rev. Damon, his dream and mine are the same dream," Hunt said. "We're looking forward to get ting more people back to the church," Damon said. "We're doing some outreach, making phone calls and sending brochures to homes." Hunt said it's appropriaterhai the pews came from a Moravian Church in Wmston-Salem. "Neither one be lieved in slavery, the Methodists or the .Moravians." Hunt, a former member at St. John's in Mocksville, said the Lord led him to the church, which he passed regularly while driving down US 158. "I started praying for the Lord to send me somebody," Hunt said, "somebody to help me. I'm grow ing. 1 can feel it. It's the spirit work ing." Damon admitted he was a bit skeptical when he was named pas tor at Smith Grove. "Since I've been here amongst the people, and how they have re ceived me and my wife, it's a God send," Damon said. "You go where the Lord sends you and do what He wants you to do. "We want to restore this church and bring the people back. For some reason or another, they have wan dered off. We decided we need to go to the homes and visit with the members ... and find out what they would like to see happen in the church." Of course. Continued From Page 1 . "A long time ago when people died, if they died of a certain disease, they had a different color stone," Hunt says. "Also, look at some of the penmanship and writing on these. You see how all this is tied into Davie County history. I come out here sometimes by myself and just walk." Changes are taking place inside, as well. The sun shines on the stained glass windows as Hunt points out the road bed in front of the church and says it used to be Salem Road, the only<-V road that went from Mocli- ville to Farmingtoa years ago. "Come on in," Hunt says as he opens the church doors. . ...WsA.-' The chapel benches are from a Moravian church. And he points to inscriptions at the bottom of each of the chapel's windows. "The families on each of the windows is out I there in the cemetery," There is work in progress going on at the front of the chapel. "This pulpit area is being extended and it's going to have beautiful red carpet." Hunt takes a Bible from the pulpit and shows us it dates back to 1945. Hunt, Spease, and Johnson are soon Joined by another church member, Mamie Brown Young. They say the church has about 14 members on the roll. Dewey points to the area between the windows and says there used to be candles there that were lit to provide light for the church. The church steeple has the original tin roof still covering it. The bell that is more than 125 years old no longer hangs there. It is kept in storage. "It's my prayer that someone in our congregation is going to put that bell back up there," Hunt says.
