DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD, May 25,2000 - aui'rs DupcL 04fCH IHirao Bailey's Chapel Methodist Church Bailey's Chapel Road, Adve -ce Pastor, Harold Zimmerman Bailey's Chapel Celebrating 100 Years Service, Music, Meal And More This Sunday ADVANCE - The names are famil iar - and so is the little white church that has stood the test of time. The names include Bailey, Barnes, Carter - common in this community nestled between Advance and Fork. They are the ones who started what is now Bailey's Chapel United Meth odist Church. And when the church celebrates its 100th anniversary on Sunday, ancestors of those who got it all started wilt be among the congre gation. The beginning goes something like this. Sallie Bames, who was bom in 1882. married Charlie Carter at age 17. They soon moved to a farm owned by Capp Bailey - and she walked several miles to go to church on Sundays. Mr. Bailey was concerned about her long walk, and told her if she wanted a church, he would donate the land and timber for its construction. Folks in the community began meeting in a "brush arbor" for summer worship, hearing preachers that Mr. Bailey procured from other churches. In 1912. Bailey's Chapel was formed as a non-denominational church. Community members, along with a couple of carpenters hired by Mr. Bailey, built a permanent structure from timber that stood on the site. It was named after Mr. Bailey, as a Bai ley family cemetery was also nearby. The church still has dial same old- timey feel and look, with the addition ofa few modern amenities and stained- glass windows that are a highlight for member.s and visitors. She was among those on a Wednesday night painting crew to spruce up the fellowship hall for Sunday's celebration. "The church is beautiful and the windows are beauti ful," Mrs. Myers said. "I'm not bragging because it was aU here before I got here." Members, former members and visitors are welcome. A group photo will be taken, and there will be horse-drawn car riage rides. A history table of artifacts and photos will be on display, and the church is seUing com memorative mugs and plates.
