Moore) Then he named some of the early members of the church: ' Heck Blackwelder, Frank -^vans, Jake ^'*oore, Ben Eoore, Billle Moore, James Moore ( and his mother Glernentine Moore, Denny Crimes, Marion Booe and probably .others." Some local prea hersS Turner Brown, Hardy Varner, the glory of his star was dimmed by such lumlnonles as Dblly Johnson, and Clark Plnkney Tutterow at his death he bequeathed all his property to the church at Hew Union, where he was a member. "There we e three negro women who attende-: the preaching services here In the early days of this church. They were Llndy winiams, Haloy Powell, and Jane Tatum. The first two are remembered as ^ being pious old women. g Now before the Civil War the negro attended the churches of their white* masters. Provision was made In the old church for t em, usually a gallery, ^'^any of them were members of the white folks churches. They had no chruces of their own, until they were set fi'ee. ^et these old negro women prefered to worship with their old white masters and friends, rather than go with their own color. Heck Blackwelder, Blllle M^ore and Ben ^'^oore cut and scored the logs for the frame and Jake Graves hewed them and he and cape Blackwelder at d possibly others, put the timbers together, enclosed It and the little group of earnest soulswmnt Into tl and went to housekeeping In the naje of the "^ord. A great many years later the house was celled and benches built and so It was completed.
