Mr. Mangum owns and operates the Evening, Breeze Motel in the Statesville vicinity. Eight ladies competed for the Miss N.A.A.C.P. crown. Mrs. Thomas Gaither represented the Davie County Branch as Mother of the Year. Mrs. Kivie Kaplan, president of the National Association of the N.A.A.C.P. from Boston, Mass. was guest speaker. These persons also attended the morning service at Rush Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, at 558 East Cabarrus Street. The Rev. T.H. Harris, pastor of the Church delivered an inspiring message. Rev. While there, they visited parts of Canada. Mr. Williams and son, Milton attended the National N.A.A.C.P. Convention held in Boston, Mass. The Williams were also made proud grandparents of a new baby girl who arrived shortly after their arrival in Buffalo. The purpose of the meeting was to install the newly elected officers for the year. The following officers were duly installed. They are: President, Donald Naylor; vice pres., James R. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14. 1972 Davie NAACP Elects Officers The Davie County Branch of NAACP held a meeting December 5 at Shiloh Baptist Church. Although the organization has not been active for the past two years, the charter was retained. In the meeting, 102 persons paid their membership fee. The old charter was re -activated. Charles M. McLain, state Field Director of Winston-Salem, was present and presided during the election. Officers were elected for twelve months. They are as follows: Rev. M. L. Dillingham, president; Mrs. Connie Campbell, vice-president; Mrs. Sadie Jones, secretary; Mrs. Adelaide S. Ellis, treasurer; and Rev. F. D. Johnson, legal redress chairman. There are other officers to be elected at the next meeting which will be held January 23, 1973 at the Second Presbyterian Church in Mocksville. DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14,1972 - 9 NAACP PROGRAM The Davie Branch of NAACP will sponsor an outdoor Christmas program around a Christmas Tree on the lot of Bill's Cab on the corner of Williams and Depot Streets Sunday, December 17, beginning at 7 p.m. This is a public program and anyone desirous may take part in the program. The public at large is invited to attend. Page 1 of 1 Davie County Public Library A History of the Davie 1974 County Chapter of the NAACP 12 - DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD, THURSDAY, MAY 9, 1974 NAACP "Mother Of Year" Campaign The Davie County NAACP branch will celebrate its annual "Mother of the Year" campaign Friday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. at St. John A.M.E. Zion Church located on Hillcrest Drive. This year's treat will include a covered dish supper brought by each member. The money raised by each contest will be used by the National NAACP office located in New York City for general purposes. The NAACP solicits your support in this program for the purpose of a better community and a better tomorrow. 10B DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD, THURSDAY, MAY 16,1974 "NAACP Mother Of Year Winner" For the second straight year, Mrs. Charles Williams of Mocksville, has become the NAACP mother of the year winner for Davie County. She will represent Davie County Sunday evening in Raleigh, N.C. for the National mother of the year. Mrs. Williams who is a very fine mother herself, said these words after becoming winner, "I am glad I can help raise money for a worthy cause such as this and I shall do everything I can to represent Davie County." Mrs. Williams received a warm reception upon being named winner. Over two hundred dollars was raised by Mrs. Williams and other contestants. The president, M.L. Dillingham had these words to say, "it gives me great pleasure to know the kind of dedication Mrs. Williams has shown throughout the years working with the NAACP. It is hopeful that this kind of dedication will act as a contagion and spread throughout the community. For so long apathy has played its part and has almost killed any kind of progress that should be made. Mrs. William's display of dedication and consistency hopefully will stimulate the minds and souls of all people. 8B - DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD, THURSDAY, JUNE 6, 1974 NAACP Branch To Have Meeting The NAACP Branch of Davie County will meet Sunday, June, 16th, at 7:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church. This will be the last regular meeting and is considered to be an important one. The president, M.L. Dillingham, is asking that all 108 members be present. The agenda for the meeting will include discussion of NAACP workshop; discussion of meetings during the summer; discussion of membership drive. Brock Community Building. The purpose of this meeting is to renew membership and to elect new officers for the next two years. ..Your Presence is of supreme importance, for if NAACP is going to fulfill its purpose and objectives. You who are members are going to have to see that the objectives are carried out. If you do not attend this meeting and have no intentions of doing so in the near future, please do not complain about NAACP not doing its job. Don't knock us until you have tried us," said M. L. Dillingham, outgoing president. 15 DAVIE COUNTY ENTERPRISE RECORD, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1974 NAACP Has Meeting Here The Davie County Chapter of the NAACP held its final meeting for 1974 on Tuesday night, Dec. 10, in the B.C. Brock Community Service Center. The Rev. M.L. Dillingham opened the meeting by reading a letter from Lynn Haven Nursing Home stating their compliance with HEW fair employment regulations. He also presented a certificate of commendation to Davie County from the National NAACP for continued financial support of the organization. Rev. Dillingham then asked B.T. Williams to chair election of new officers. The 28 attending constituent members of the Davie County NAACP elected the 1975 Executive Committee as follows: President, Rev. M.L. Dillingham; 1st Vice President, Tom Coker; 2nd Vice President, Steve Dalton; Secretary, Mrs. Bessie Newsome; Assistant Secretary, Mrs. Sheila Clark; Treasurer, Mrs. Ruth Peebles; Legal Advisor, Julius Suitor; and, Devotional Chairman, Madison Peoples. Rev. Dillingham is minister at Shiloh Baptist Church. Mr. Coker is the Community Action Program coordinator for Davie Co. Mr. Dalton is assistant manager of B.C. Moore. Mrs. Bessie Newsome is an employee at Heritage Furniture Co. Mrs. Sheila Clark is employed with the Community Action Program. Julius Suitor teaches at Davie Co. High School and Madison Peebles is retired. Appointed as Special Committee chair persons were: Mrs. Agnes Thomas, Press and Publicity; Mrs. Alice Gaither, Education Committee; Mrs. Helen Dalton, Membership Committee; Mrs. Connie Campbell, Freedom Fund; Odell Eaton, Political Committee; Mrs. Marjorie Johnson, Social Committee; Julius Suitor, Legal Redress Committee; Ms. Nettye Ijames, Economic Opportunity and Community Coordination; Miss Judy Cheek, Youth Work Committee; and B.T. Williams, Nominating Committee. Further elections and appointments to committees will be made at the next meeting on Jan. 21st, 1975. The membership drive realized 72 paid members, this total is a combination of renewal and new members. Memberships are $4.00 per person yearly; $6.0.0 memberships include the Crisis Magazine. Future meetings of the NAACP will be held at the B.C. Brock Community Service Center on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Anyone needing transportation to the meetings should contact a member of either the executive or committee boards.
