PUBLIC LIBRARY t\/10CKSVlU.E;n H HISTORY OF THE CEDAR CREEK BAPTIST CHURCH ORGANIZED 1872 The Cedar Creek Baptist Church was organized and set apart from the Mother Church, Eaton's Baptist (White), Cana Community, in the year 1872. At that time they were given permission td'use a building that had been used as a schoolhouse for White children, the Old Brick Academy, located about a hair mile from the present Cemetery. The first Pastor was the Rev. Ben Watts, with twin Brothers Jordan and Harry Eaton as Deacons and a small membership. They worshiped in this building for some time and the membership began to grow. And being Divinelv led, they planned for a building of their own to worship the Lord under their own vine and fig tree. The lot where the Cemetery now lays was acquired and the churdh building was built It was a log structure, each member doing his part with Axes and Cross-cut Saws and wagons needed to get the job done. Soon it was completed and their Services where held there. They worshiped there for several years and yet the strugde was not over, they wanted ot make it more comfortable and inspiring for Generations to come. They sou^t to build a more modem building. Tlurough good leadership and determination, they built a new frame structure, and used the old building as a school- house. As the years passed, the Cemetery began to grow and the members decided to buy a new plot to bury their dead, thou^ the older members did not want to separate the church hum the Cemetery, though in later years, under me pastorate and leadership of Rev. D. W. Montgomery, the Deacon Board, with Bro. B. W. Williams as chairman, the decision to move the Church to the new plot was agreed upon. In 1920, they contracted with Zeb Tise (a house mover) to move the church. That agreement is as follows: (Agreement; Oct 20) This agreement entered into between Zeb Tise and the members of the Cedar Creek Baptist Church trustees, duly authorized by the Church to act in their behalf with said contractor. The Contractor to move the Church house from its present site to the new site recendy purchased by the Church. The Contractor to place the building on a good and firm foundation and to be left in good condition with any damage to the building to be repaired by said contractor before completion of agreement The Committee whose names are hare unto attached, agrees to pay contractor the sum or $350.00 for same work when completed. J. Tatum, two additional rooms were built Although, through the years that followed, with minor repairs, the Old Ship Of Zion began to need more and more ^ improvement for comfortable worship. ii>fl 2^ In 1959, through the Divine leadership of Rev. H. Wesley Wiley, the members decided that die time had come to build a new church building, thus, a drive was started to raise money for this project With much ' tJ prayer and sincere desire to build a new church, each member stood ready to do his share. We prayed that j i the Lord would bless our efforts and multiply them in His own way. And he did bless us, the building soil was' ; ^ ready for the seed to be planted, but God moves in mysterious ways. Rev. Wiley was called to another field ' ^ of service just as the plans oegan to formulate. But God Alw!ws has a way. David said he has never seen the Rightous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread, and just as Cod did for Abraham with a Ram in the bush, he ^ already had a great leader and pastor for our small flock in mind, our present Pastor, Rev. W. C. Hay. ' Through his Divine guidance and leadership, the seeds for the new Cedar Creek Baptist Church were planted and up came a beautiful building. Goa is still blessing us in many ways through Rev. Hay. In years ^ to come we may all look back and say that God Does answer our prayers and for generations to come, it can ^ be said that all good and perfect gifts DO come from God. The members and friends of the Cedar Creek Baptist Church do truly thank Him for our ancestors and > all former Pastors who served here. We especially thank Him for our present pastor. Rev. Hay and his sD devoted wife, who works closely by his side. We thank God for sending them our way and our blessings ^ are greater since they touched our lives. o DAVIE CO. Several business matters were taken up - discussed and settled. The Committee on Arm offered the following report which was read and adopted. 1872 January 29th The colored arm met and it being a called meeting. After services by Elder Watts (of color) proceeded to business. Four' of the committee being present. On motion the Arm went into election of a pastor which resulted in the unanimous choice of Elder B. F. Watts. On motion the Arm pledged to pay $4o00 per month^ $48.00 for the year*s service in aid of his support. Where upon Elder Watts was called on for an answer whether he could serve them or not. He at first declined but afterward agreed to serve them the present year. On motion the Arm requested the mother church to grant them the privilege of being constituted into a regular Baptist church and if the request is granted to invite a presbytery to meet with them for that purpose, Wesley Mesley being reported for dancing. On motion a committee was raised consisting of Jordan Eaton and Franklin Eaton to visit him and try to convince him of his error, and also to request him to fill his seat in church at the next regular ^ meeting to answer to the above charge. Wesley Mesley and that he admitted he had been dancing and manifested no degree of penitance. On motion he was excluded from the fellowship of the church. On motion adjourned until Saturday evening before the 4th Sabbath in April. 1872 April 27th Met according to previous appointment at the new church house near Cedar Creek, Davie Co., N.C. Howell, Isaac Howell, Wesley Howell, Benjamin Hendricks, Elick Tatum, Linda Williams, Eliza Howell, Bette Mesley, Milley Hendricks, Hannah Hendricks, Anaka Leyons, Chany Williams and Jane Tatum. Davie County ^teiprise Record FARMINGTON - Cedar Creek Missionary B^tist Church has been a mainstay in the black community in this area. For 125 years, thejChurch has been there. n ( Fromhumblebegumingsinaloaned i~ -f ^ ^ 6 o ^ $ O o building, to re-building after a devas tating fire in 1995, the church has remained constant Beginning Sunday, the church on Cedar Creek Road will begin a week- long celebration of its 125th anniver sary. The church was started in 1872 by former slaves, an off-shoot of the white Batons Baptist Church. An old brick academy was loaned for services. The Rev. Ben Watts was first pas tor. Deacons were former slaves, twin brothers Jordan and Harry Eaton. As membership grew, the church' moved toalogbuildingbuilt by church members with axes, cross-cut saws and wagons. Later came a frame church, with the log building given for use as a school. In 1920, the church was moved to the present site, and in 1959 a fund drive began to build a new church. Of course, it was rebuilt after the 1995 fire. Many of the current members are descendants of the original members. They said it was organized and the white community loaned them a brick academy to have services in until they could build a little building of their own," said Odell Eaton. Hubert West remembers well grow ing upwiththechurch.Goingtochurch wasn't an option. "When I was a kid, this was a main attraction in the comuni ty because there wasn't nothing else," he said. Twice a month he would attend services, as the itinerate preachers made their rounds. Sunday School was held every i^k. "We used to come down the road barefooted, and when we would get here to the parking lot, we would dust our little shoes off and go on in." Services then began early, and ended late. On Sundays, there was church, and nothing else. You didn't work. Stores ^ere closed. Mbals were prepared the ..day before. •TheRev.W.EMartinisthechurch's first full-time pastor, and he's been on the job for the past seven years. "We have a stable membership (about 85), with good attendance," he said. "We probably have three-fourths of them who are here on a regular basis." There's something about a home church that never loses its appeal, Odell Eaton said. Several drive for miles to attend services in thechurch that raised them, he said. The church has three acres on the church lot, and eight acres at a cem etery across the road. West and Eaton remember well that cold morning in 1995 when they heard the church was on fire. They arrived to find it engulfed in flames. They watched helplessly as fire destroyed thechurch, not knowing what the future would hold. As it turned out, they were able to rebuild, with insurance, and with help" from many people, many of whom had never heaid of Cedar Creek Mission-' ary Baptist Church. "We found out that when you're in' trouble, people will help you," Eaton" said. T ! .
