Apprentice BondsDAVIE COUNTY, N. C. APPRENTICE BONDS
Extracted and sent by Grace H. Wight from NC Archives
Before the development of the various social programs devised by the
Federal and State government the counties had to provide for the care of orphans.
Sometimes parents could not support their children. Children were then bound out
to a master who in turn was to provide the child training comparable to vocational
training and give them the necessities of life.
Many times the apprentice records are overlooked by people doing research
for a lost child. These records are rich in information. In the record you can find
names, ages, sometimes a date of birth, parents and the training the child was to
receive.
Also included were the names of the master, the Clerk of Court, and
witnesses, the date of the indenture. A child over fourteen years of age could bind
himself or choose his master. This was not limited to the poor. Wealthy parents
could bind their children to learn a trade or skill.
The apprentice's age was usually given. The service for males was usually
until age 21. Females were usually bound until age 18.
In return for the work provided the master was to provide: education such
as reading, writing, arithmetic to the rule of three (defined in this issue), sufficient
diet, washing, lodging, apparel, and medical care. In most cases annual reports
were to be presented at Court and filed. This assured the court that the child was
not being mistreated.
When the indenture was over, the child was given at that time freedom dues,
new clothing, a Bible, tools and perhaps a horse. The reference "rule of three is
also called The Merchant's Rule. The main tool of Graunt's mercantile -turned -
political arithmetic was the Rule of Three. The Rule of Three is the simple
arithmetic technique of using three knowns to solve for a fourth unknown factor in
a ratio relationship. For example, solving for c in the expression a/b = c/d or
a:b = c:d (Editor's note: in current math books, this is called solving a proportion.
Example: if 5 apples cost $1.00, what would 4 apples cost?)
Through these records you can also get a good idea of the variety of
occupations of the people in the community. Don't forget these records if they are
available.
