Remember, you didn't send me Pink's address but think I asked that in my

At one time you sent me a,.photo copy of John Fox and Catherine Hinkel who
were married in 1883 and which included one daughter by the name of Amelia
that married Benjamin Eaton. Could you look at your copy and give me the
birth date of the last five children also the name of the 10th child. My
copy is too blurred. Thank you.

Joseph Matthews, also in the fiv, pound group of heAirs, was a brother -in
law whose second viafc was Lydia iaton, sister of Peter Eaton, as recorded
in the New Britain baptist C,,urch minutre..s, Bucks moo. Penn. The Matthew'
sons were Joseph Jr. and John i''atthews were among those who gave
receipts for their "share of the estae of Peter Baton, deceased".
Rec_:ipts were also given by tt:e children of Ebenezer and Eve Eaton- byLt
sons John and James}. daughters Ci;gbherine M, Cynthia, LyddL * and .sons-in-

Irvin, husband of Elizabeth .4aton.
Another ident14ed heir was Catherine Eaton, sister to Peter, "benezeL,
James and Lydia Eaton ( Matthews). The word "sister" was writbn on her
receipts.
The receipts were apparently, for what was called "shares" in the Eaton
esate and were for money received- sometimes with interest. The money
was to come from the sale of unwilled property and was to be divided
equally between the wife °arah ( a second wife) and his brothers and
sisters children.
The relationship of all the above named individuals to the maker of the w
will, have been definitely documented.
Howeve-., similar identification on the other heirs is, either entirely
lacking or too doubtful for forming any postive conclusions as to why
they were included in the will.
The ones for whom no information has been found are: E,ith Kimbrouch who
was willec furniture, horse, etc, CGtherine -hannon wille- five rounds
and the following whose receipts ofr "shares" are on file at B.vtg `'ounty
Library. Robert E. Shannon, Peter Vastine, "orothy Vastine,
Elizabeth Morris and Joseph T. Miller.
For the several remaining heirs we have only marriage bonds, which may or
maw not apply and one or two wills in Bucks and Rowan counties.
"The unknowns who were to receive five pounds were: Robert Clark, Alsa
`'lark, relatiomship not stated. This -"urry `'o. N.C• marriage bond may
apply. Robert Clark and Alsa Howell Oct. 30, 1786.

Dear Pink:
I wander how you got along locating the Stinchcomb place.
It was certainly good to see yo-i and Christine face to face and sit

Dear Ping
It looks like they keep on going, doeds'nt it2
I saw the account of Jesse'scbath in Winston gapers- both sentinel thatJday
and the Journal the next day.
Then, the Lnterprise had it, with more data. Tue year has been hard on King
too.
Seem like the fall is such a eautiful time of the yea..- generally, and yet
that is when the Eatons seem to begin to think about leaving this world.
W,.,en 1 went to file the notice abo t -esse, I put it under the one for `Irs.
Vaughn, as it happened.
I had a letter today from G s LPatop of Conway •rk. The first in severa L
years.
U cle Joseph Eaton had 3 daugnters or was it 4?, but only one son- Ben Hish
wRo married a Click. They went west in 1864, and he finally becase a
physician.
He had a lot of children and grandchilden ( Cousin Lou jinsday sent it all
to me one time).
Qnly one son lived and reared a family- 3 sons and 1 daughter.
Subian and Junious are in irk and beonard is in "ashville 'enn. the sister
Mary Jo lives in "ockford Ill.
The years of their births were 1900. 1909, 1918, 1924.
YRu know they --re some sort of double cousins to you.
Julian had promis_d to go Eaton family history hunting, but, after that
initial spurt, I had not heard from him in years, he waites that he developed
a heart blockage and that put a stop to his activities.
That reminds me, Vena narris was sent to Baptist Hospital for further tests
and examinations. The cardiagrams did not show so much cause for the
symptions she was showing, so thses doctors sent her to a specialist.
have not heard from that.
Your last deeds came in v.K.- only two or three aames i can not make out!.
I ha„e=listed all names in both s<ts of deeds and will now try to contact
Andrew "agle about them.
I notice thKr we still find only Games-'"atum.
This turns out to be the case with so many families, - notice. Trey seem
to have left nothing to guide descendants back very far into the past
history of the family.
This cold weather is not to my liking, +saving fuel- is not so good to
experience . however, i have turned my thermostate bback and right now the
temperature is higher out doors ti,an it is in thisroom. 'hink 1 will go
out into the sunshine.
I am planning to go to ohelby with the Felts for Thanksgiving, though it is
easier to stay h3me and just go along at my own gate.
I guess we go down ibursday morning and nitty thinks she ca n get "ack to
stay until Sunday morning.
They have told me that my part of the week end meals can be to take them all
out to one of their favorite barbecue places in "helby. r'or years that has

Dear Pink:
9, 197wv
I certainly do appreciate all,the Davie County clippings
from the Salisbury Post- I file them ALL.

I spent Faster inMocksville after all. Kitty came over and picked
lobs of daffodils to be used by her church in decorating for a banquet
give on 'aturday night for the Confirmation class and their parents.
VeL6at got a ride up and had reached Kitty's Friday morning. shat aft.
they set out on a shopping tour for shoes, leaving Margaret playing at
a friend's house.
ell, the friend had a new play thing and Margaret fell on the thing anc:
got VER bad breaks of both bones in left forearm. So when Kitty and
Velma got home, they found that Margaret had been carried to hospital
by a neighborhood friend.
✓he was in hospital with that arm in traction until Tuesday when they
Iperated again because the bones were slipping.
on -3aturday t::ey left her go home, returning for xrays. T', -ie last x-ray
showed the bones stil]slipping.
However, Jack and Kitty took off for the long-time planned trip to
Charleston last T"ursday or `r:day, returning today. Velma got a ride
back ' no -itty went after her, and she has been baby sitting. rQ he is
to come over here, for few days, Tu:sday, but I bet she will be
worn out that all she wil_ do is sleep.
Brook had Helen, Pete and me Laster day for dinner. The Lester Martin--
and
artineand Bob had gone to Victoria to visit Sliza..eth's parents.
I have worked in literary, put in two m:rnincs at c:;urch office last we k
andjried to keep ahead of dust etc. here at home.
The local history room at the library is about to become a full tike joss
Some of the history reserve :rooks, such as county histories, Icecords of
th:, Noravians, the geographic Gazetteer have been z)ut in that room
beca:se books weredisappearing forom shelves of he to rary.
They were being taken fl%ry n I
Monday morning- 1 cer*-ainly did not ,et very far with my letter -writing
yesterday.
I h:d decided to bike tea cakes right after lunch and was down to the
last two Takings when "elen called, .,anting to ride out toward `arming",
to hunt her carpenter-ca)jainter. "e had just gotten back when the J.K.
Rouses came visiting.
T:.e phone rang in the middle of above sentince and my caller talked for
an hour, by that time I was toosleepy to think and went to ked and slept
ALL night.
Today, I horse to get the history of the house Sam Howell now occucies,
the Thomas rerebee house history as far as we cou_dfind the data azd giv•
the information to present owners. 0.1so, the next door lady wh :.ought

his house. If only folks had recorded deeds, telling about the
houses and the tracts of land. My "ed Front store history has stopped
with the 1890's information.
I: still believe that your best bet on that Jerusalem property, is
to go back to land grants to Nicholas -Click and see if you can find
out what happened to his lands.
"emember that the Furches and "atons got mixed up by intermarrying wit
the Clicks.
Both Jesse and Ben Rush Laton payed taxes in Liberty bisTrict ( now
Jerusalem township).
Ben -Rush, you know, married a Chick and they were charter members of
thel•]pcksville church, bringing letters from Fork.
Well, the morning hours are moving past fast and I better start the
day's schedule.
It includes getting my ESTIMA,TEU tax checks off to Uncle "am and N.C.
J_w more thing. v'e did not find, the day you were here, some more of
Aunt 'alie's kodak pi tures. There are ti.ree of the six Tatum
sisters. Oo you have them. 6 girls in a row, all dressed in white
And now, good dayto you.

Wednesday
Dear Pink
41t.
As I have said, 1 depend on you to keep me up to date on Post_ stories abo•t
Devie County. - As it happens, I had some notes on Greasy Corner, which` I discovered I had
never had typed up. so I fo nd them and got the job done by our volunteer
typist. I had gone don i 1962 and interviewed the wife of the man whi
started that garage. r-ssentially the same story- leving out the reputation
of North Cooleemee and the rum runnersi. l am putting both articles in the
files and futhre resea the s can take their choice!.
,l
I am afrkid you will ha a to back up on Mildred `lark and tell me again who
she is and what her familiy in aavie County was.
"'hen I struck Asa Martin i. deeds you and R^use have sent, I realized ( from
his last copy of a Mcl--ubbin paper) that Benjamin Martin was a generation back
of Benjamin '"actin on Dutchmans Creek, ancestor of the Eli j ah Martin fami1w.
( ratti' iay remember r,4ss Notie Martin and sister and Mr. lrom 1'lartin).
Am glad to here about Pattie and her progress.
I ordered the enterprise sent to her- so she can renew her aquaintance with
Davie County during her resting periods. ' Tell her the most familiar names
will turn out to -.fie in t the Cedar ''reek news- probably kin to team's build -
inspector.... along with Lucy Iatums, Fill Furcheses etc.
Velma is here this week, so I am not getting to library- though I am to meet
this aternoon the school teacher from Yadkin county who wrote the "arner
family history.
I will try to run down that "Alice L_aton, daughter of Teter "aton" story which
he has included in his "history
However, I have had an idea, finally. 1n a -.,out 17777 and "Alsey "aton" and a
if`argartt 'raton joined at Lutchmans "-reek baptist Church. No other motion of
either one- unless Margaret was A-ev. Peter's wife whose name was `•'argaret.
The only Varner named in keb. Peter's will was Benjamin whose receipt for his
share of the estate. Benjamin was hunsband of a neice of the rev. Teter s, so
he is accounted for.
The receipts =were from "brothers and siters childrensupposedly. 'he only
N.C. realatives I have not been able to place were M.D. and George and Edith
Kim rough. ->o far, 1 have fo nd only records of "usiness connections with
kinoroughs.
I checked my Poindexter material and found names and dutew for Thomas ✓cott

Well, she cou]1d not read my uniting so got ce__ lery, instaed of cakes.
T ,ursday mroning.
Andrew Lagle was in library yesterday afternoon for a short while* so was 1.
he ays he has located the library.-Yesterday
Boone tract on "lishas Lreek exactly. Go
due ast foom courthouse square axil three miles and and you will land
in t e middle of it. And where is that on today's map. he sa/s it is a
tract adjoining George "artin's property out on 64 ( t.e road to Fork and
Lexi gton). I. he can absolutely pin point three or four grants out there,
then you can attach Oames Tatum to one of them!.
What is "bugging" Andrew now, is the too few references wer have to
Robert trout.
The ,deeds we do have so_nd contradictory as to :_east or west of the 'Jasper
Sain land.
Sometime when you have time to go hunting at library and find any Plc'ubbin
papers if:cluding Robert gout in the material. just get it copied, stcik in
this enveloped and dro p ir. mail.
The winds kept velma w6ke last night, I slep through it. If 'abriel should
blow his horn soon after 1 have goneto sleep I wo..: d hot hear it!.

Dear Pattie & Pink:
If I have not lost the address pink sent on her letter,.= will be sending
you toe news and asking more .questions !
Right now, the questions concern my father's medical office:°at Crana.
Massa atop, who owned it 1=st, sold to Hugh Larew.and he moved tt to
mockaville and set it on the old jail lot. _
Hugh sold t e C.C. Sanford place to some new comers, bougth the old Jil an
has restored it9 to its*ariginal architecture.'His living apartment is up
stairs where the prisoners used to stay.
He plans to build a guest house on the lot- Williamsburg-.stylee
!he office, he repainred the sort of off white used'at ~illiamsburg and
...
painted the roof red.
0
Of course he wanCs the history of that office. I can not even find a deed
to the lot! He went to Lana in 1888 I think, married in 1889 and 1 was bor
in the house, but i never thought to ask anyone ..bout the past ow ers of th
lot. II that Phoebe' s gather built the two story house on a
another road or street, to°wh ch we moved and lived in it until came to M
Mocksville in 1895.-
J
Those were the years in which U cli Tom w,s managing the Baton estate -
if one could call it managing. I don't suppose you all ever heard your
mother talk about that anymore than she seemed to talk about her -art in
that estate.
I did appreciate your information an sadie. Am enclosing the first
letter I hafe had from Kathryn mown, so you see she has not been much
source of information!
It is Kitty now, who is down with a rupture_ or slipped disc. It seems
that she has been having right much pain in back and legs, but, being so
hard headed, kept going until she had to stop.
Velma, not knowing about it, came from a wek end in ''ichmond ( visiting
Mrs. John Burrus) and found Aitty downk, am Betsy came in the same day
from her trip to ''witzerland. so Velma stayed on unt r'riday, then nelen
and I went over and brought her to Mocksville. 'he Felts seemed to feel
they could manage the household affairs- or learn to, so we are just
leeting them try. Of counze, we do not have any more Aunt Nettie's who

Dear Pink andPattie:
Your letter did arrive on time and l appreciated int, but about that time I
learned that '4r. Carnes, pastor here, was resigning to take up work at "enoir
and, though i had been knowning it would come soow, ' still w}s not prepared
for the way it hit me!
Hewevedl- I was recovering from that blow suggicientiy to sit down and write you
folks a Davie County newsle€ter, when Kitty called -.me one morning to tell me
that Annie "all had entered the hospital because of a "blockage", As tests an
abd an exploratory operation showed, that blcockage was due to a rapid
growth that seems to have involved most of the abdominal organs* finyway, th
took out no organs and told the famiay that they would attempt no treatment
for .-.e condition.
She is in tprsyth I"lemorial Hospital. Had sever gas pains after the oper-
ation, but Kitty toldus yesterday that Jack had seen her in the morning and s
she appeared comforgable, cheerful.
Hazel Ilizabeth hopes that she will recover sufficiently, for the operation,
to be taken out to her house.
How long? I do not know.
This past year, beginning with an operation on Charles Burrus Jr. ,last June
for removal of a maliginant mole, has been pretty awful. But we go on until
each of us, until our own particular train stops.
"ith the going of '`Ir. ''arnes, lots of my jobs as church clerk? S.S, sec. and
general unpaid worker :round the church, will stop.
I am not on the current pulpit committee, and will at least, J.not feel the
personal caneenn and res ponsibility for the next man that did for this
one. That will mean less involv:,ent and t at will in tburn mean less real
personal concern.
Bill „ngel is interm pastor as he was six years ago, and he is good, we enjoy
his sermons very much, I realize that preaching teice on lundays is about all
thepastoral work we can expect from him.
I am supposed to -e involved in various aspects of the library work, but
am not veryregul at there these days. 'yid get to work last week though.
The 'cavi a County Historian was working on a chapter on which had done
some research. 04e both had bo go into it more thoroughly. But %hat
chapter now goes to the printer.
Velma has been here since last Oed. but she was so worn out getting ready
for their trip to visit Charles "r, that she slept most of her times

I seem to be making so many mistakes that 1 willjust stop for this time and
go on with my curtailed Monday morning jobs.

Dear Pink:
This envelope
has be, --n addressee: to
you every
since 1 found your zip

I had better send the
exemption
paper along now.
Last week Philip Kendrick's wife came calling - she and Sophie Meroneyf
and her daughter, Grace, is interested in family history, but too many
home duties to be at it.
Alsb, last week the executor of Duke Jheek began clearing out the cheek
house. They sent to library a dozen la ge boxes fille d with news-
papers- Davie 'ounty and other towns, scrape books etc.. I finally
got t e newspapers separates into those we wanted to keep and the onec
that did not belong in our history room.
Now, am farming out the thousands of clippings- one% an Davie County
from the Lyndon Johnson, Kennedy, Hoover, roya 1 family of England,
Goldwater etc. etc. etc.
Af te„.,that, I guess we will separate t e "avie I-ounty clippings into
the various classi-icatio-s, put them into envelopes and label and file

Dear Pink Pattie:
A/week ago was the birthday celebration- and you shoul
have been here.
I gather that the idea originated with Barbara, Charl
Jr. ' s wife. "s long ago as "arch she started the
conversation going and ball rolling.
From t e various conversations later, I gather that
many pins were suggested end discarded- all the time i
working carefully to keep me from guessing. They
need not have worried! I
I was to,: absorbed in my own problems to be even list -I
ening to them most of the time.
The final decision was to hate it at i'elen' s and to
invite my first cousins on Mama's side. 1 could have
told tt.em that most of you were too far away, ailing,
or deeply involved with your own problems:

Dear Folks,
I am copying Nettie's card. Sent the original on to Grace.
"Well she is doing real good. They had her up walking yesterday.
They let her night nurse go and she didn't rest too good. She is wanting
her back. She sends her love. I think she is doing real well. I will
write again soon. With Love. Nettie".
She is doing much better that I thought she could. I haven't heard anything
from Howard. Guess my letter wasn't what he wanted to hear.

I am enclosing a Rotary Bulletin with a tribute to loam written by Rowe -
Campbell.
I was reading in our Library here in Collier's Ency.
"Zacharius was Pope of Rome from 1741 - 1752, followed by Pope Gregory 111.
Zacharias or Zachary was born in Greene, lived in Southern Italy. I will
saad you a copy when I can get it copied.
All here are O.K. and join in love to each of you.
I did thank you for so sweetly remembering me with the check. However,
I didn't cash it. Thought I would come down this winter, buy $10.00 worth
of CHEESE", and study more in the Library.
I got a copy of the family of Henry Clay Zachary. It was Zeroxed from the
family and the writing is just beautiful. I can't wait for you to see it.
Why don't you get busy and tie up with Nathaniel? You know they all came
from the same place.
I heard from Rmin London. They said the man in charge of geneologies
was on vacation and they would write me about Tatums and Eatons when he
came back to work.
Love,, \
