W. A. Badley of Mocksville was the first president and T. J. Byerly was the first cashier. During the ticrst formative years, the Bank of Davie had only two employees: Air. Byerly, the cashier, and a bookkeeper. The bank was Fast located in the building that is now •a part of Wilkins Dsvg Store. In 1907 it moved into special ;facilities co4ytructed for it by the MocksvMe Masonic Lodge on the Southwest korner of the square and has operated at this site for the past 57 years. During the past 63 years The Bank of DwAe has grown from $3,000 stock in 1901 to $125,000 in capital stock tachy. Through service to the county and sound bus5ness practice, our bank has prospered through the good times and bad. Today we *=her those whom we serve in the thousands, and look forward to -greater service and further growth in the future. The name of every native hero from Washington to Wilson should be emblazoned upon its walls. The Court room would serve as a meeting, place. The library now domiciled in one room should be equipped to serve the whole county, and be made of great service in the present war on illiteracy. Other rooms could be arranged to epitomize the patriotic, education4 social and agricultural activities of the county. A rest room, with accompanying, conveniences, for rural residents (now by reason of the auto, suburbanities,) would tend to check the flow of business to nearby towns made inevitable by good roads. Its dome was the target for 5herman's Yankees and still shows marks of their bullets; the names of its defenders will be forgotten if care is not taken. Tear it down as you wculd a discarded tobacco barn or a bird nest of last year? Yee: but not until every citizen every traveller, every boy and girl within range, has learned through appropriate exhibits the life history, the social and in- dustrial activities of this pioneer county. Put up the building at auction for tlxe high dollar? Since the Davie County Public Library Mocksvll4, NC THE GRAVES OF SQUI1tE AND SARAH BOONE IN JOPPA Recent events of the Boone Wagon Train and the presence at the Hom In The West of a descendant of Daniel Boone, has brought renewed interest in the famed pioneer and his family. In answer to many requests, we are rerunning the above picture of the grave markers of Squire and Sarah Boone in Joppa Cemetery just outside of Mocksville. The above tombstones are today encased in a permanent con- crete marker. As may be noted, the headstone ... crudley carved, reads: "Squire Boone departed this life the sixty*ninth year of his age in that yeah of our Lord 1765, Geneary Tha 211. The .companion stone for Sarah B o o n e reads: "Sarah Boone departed this life 1777, aged 87 years.' The stone markers were so chipped away by souvenir hunters that they at one time were removed and stored in a bank vault. The historical commission then took the markers and encased them -in: concrete as they stand today in. the Joppa Cemetery. on US 601 North. The railroad became Davie County's link with the outside stops and Railroad mail service was discontinued in July 1967. On January 31, 1968 scheduled passenger service was ter- minated. At the present time only freight trains make stops in Mocksville. John S. Haire served as the local agent from 1929 to 1963. The present agent is Henry W. Ridge who assumed his duties here on March 11, 1963. The rallroad depot station at Mocksville as it appeared many years ago when it was a vital center of activity. Built In 1891, very few changes have been made since that lime..... with the exception of a paint job every now and then. In the early days of the railroad, the depot was a busy place as crowds come to see the trains pull in and out. a Rich Park Taking 1B - Davie County Enterprise, May B. 1969 On N Look'.... redevrl lopntent of Rich IPartk has been completed under the Land anJ Water CW15el'VO tIOn Fund Act of 1965. The Town of Mocksville received a grant of 58,100 from this fund in August of 1968 to develop Rich Park. The total cost of this project was 516,200 with the Town of Mocksville sharing = of the total cost. Two new picnic areas at the park are almost complete with two new shelters, fountains, tables and grills, Six acres of woodland have been improved with three-quarters of a mile of nature trails. New chain length gates and fence for tennis and baseball field have been constructed. Most of the park has been seeded and landscaped. All "t the dlecinc.] wiring is brine pm under ground. The plan for the redevelopment of Rich Park was prepared by tlta Soil Conservation Service working through the Davie Soil and Water Conservation District. Consultative assistance was provided by the North Carolina Recreation Commission. The Mocksville Town Bound and the Mocksville Recreation Commission also provided assistance. George Shutt, Town Clerk, is in charge of administration of funds and Andrew Lagle, Town Engineers, is providing engineering assistance. The exact date when this picture was made is not certain. However, a clue to the date may be indicated by the model of the cars parked around the square. Also the sign indicates that Wallace 5 and 10 then occupied the building later to become Davie Furniture Company. Also it might be noted that the stoplight had not yet been placed on the square and the Firestone Store building had not yet been contructed adjoining Hall Drug Company. IN EARLIER DAYS The Masonic Building, shown above, was con - Warted by the MocksviBe Masonic Ladge, No. 134 around 1910 at a cost in that day said to be $11,000. It was built on the site of the original Masonic building that was torn away tomakeroom for the present bulldhW. The Bank of Davie moved into its present Charters soon after the building -was constructed. The post office occupied the portion now occupied by Edd's "to and TV Service. The Davie Record moved into this portion when the post office moved out. T. B. Bailey, an attorney, had offices on the second Door.
