After many weeks of planing and conferences with others concerning -syour proposed sewage systems we have finally been able to design a system that we feel will provide you with satisfactory service. Please find enclosed the Material and Parte list and'nesign Specifications. As you can see. fr.nm the nncloserl information, this is a very involved :type systems thus extreme carp and olanninn hefore and during instal:latinn is a must. ' In 'order for this system to have a chance to function properly from the start, it must,be installed in very good weather conditions. For this reason we .strongl.y.-sungest that plans be made to proceed in late Spring or on into the Summer months. As best we can tell from talking to other Health Professionals, the cost of this system will generally run 2-22 -times the cost of a conventional type' ' system, In dollars and cents, I would estimatebetween.51800.0042500.00. U. _ . Mr. D. Y. McBrayer, District Sanitarian, DHS, Winston-Sal-em, N. C. At the request_of.the Davie County Health Department., I made a. visit- to the above referenced. site to determine the site suitability and design parameters for the installation of an alternative system. This tract of land consists of approximately 412 acres and is typical Piedmont, gently rolling, mature topography. The Davie County Health Department has classified this site unsuitable for the installa-- tion of a conventional. septic tank system and further determined that the severe limitations precluded the installation of an alternative system except for an area -of approximately 85 x 1.00 ft. that is presently being used as a- garden. The slope at this site. is approxi- mately 22 -to 3 percent, and the garden area is surrounded. by a drainage swell or a shallow ditch. The landscape position is on a convex slope with a draw or drainage depression in _ the lower portion-of the landscape. Examination of the soil conditions .in this garden area, from• the surface to a depth of approximately 18 to 20 in, below the surface, _a. dark brown, gravelly, sandy'loani was -enc*ountered. Underlying the topsoil, the subsoil consisted of a thin," sandy clay that' contained drainage mottles with ,extremely -slow soil -permeability and a moderate to high shrink-swell potential . This clayey subsoil was encountered to a -- : of : i-.i..na tC'. t''iii. °:vCtVW- t1 G 6U.'I UI.: + - _r r•r n•r•, iii UVcf i ac, C. I::asSiVc, i'eidtlYety impermeable saprolite or severely weathered roc;. that is a residual from basic parent materials, probably consisting of a ,; granodiorite. This site is considered unsuitable for the installation of a conventional ground absorption sewage disposal system due to the presence of shallow soils and massive or slowly permeable subsoils and saprolite. It is recommended that a modified, shallow, low-pressure pipe wastewater disposal system be installed in the garden area that consists of an area approximately 85 ft.. perpendicular to the slope and approximately 95 ft. parallel to the slope. The maximum depth of the low-pressure lateral distribution trench shall not exceed 8 in. below the surface. These laterals must be run level and parallel to the slope. The maximum hydraulic loading rate at this site should not exceed 0.2 gpd per square foot. The system should be designed for a maximum sewage flow of 450 gpd; thus, at a loading rate of 0.2 gpd per square foot, will require 2,250 sq. ft, or an area approximately 30 ft. deep x 75 ft, long. This configuration will allow for repair space, and it is recommended that the system be lo- cated along the upper portion of the slope and will consist of approximately 6 -lines , 5 ft. on centers, and approximately 75 ft. long. The manifold for this system should :Fts pormthi ggghxthe Sgber of the laterals, splitting the 75-ft. difference. From 8 to' 12 in. of suitable soil must be crowned or .turtlebacked at the Environmental Health disposal field. SJS/gb
