At a special Court begun and held at the Court House in Duplin County on Thursday the 15th day of March in the Year of Our Lord 1787, for the immediate Tryal of Darby and Peter two Negroe Slaves. the Property of the late William Taylor Esq. now committed and to be tryed for the Murder of the said William Taylor their Master, which court being summoned and convened by the Sheriff of the said County and being duly Qualified according to law, were Present, to wit: Thomas Routledge Joseph Dickson Esquires Justices James Gillespie Lewis Thomas Freeholders. All being James Middleton Sr. owners of slaves and Isaac Hunter unexceptionable according Alexander Dickson ) to law. The said Negro Man Darby being.brot. before the -Court did Confess that he did on the Thirteenth day of this Instant March felloniously Maliciously and Wilfully -murder his said Master William Taylor by striking him on the head with an ax into his A Brains of which wounds his said Master instantly Died whereupon T . X the Court doth pass this Sentence in the word following to wit that the said Negro Man Darby be immediately committed to Gaol under a Good Guard and that on Tomorrow between the Hours of one r Q N ` and Four o'clock in the afternoon he be taken out thence and tied to a Stake on the Court House lott and there burned to Death and to Ashes and his ashes strewed upon the Ground and that the Sheriff A ✓ see this Order Executed. o Davie County Public Library V Mooksvilie, NC H The said Negro slave Peter a boy about fourteen years of age being also brought before the Court and examined did Confess that he was present when his Master the said William Taylor was murdered and that he did aid & assist his Brother the aforesaid Darby in committing the said Murder the court having taken into consideration the youth of the said Peter and considering him under the Influence of his said older Brother Darby, have thought proper to pass this sentence in the following words to wit: That the said Negro boy Peter be committed to the gaol and there to Remain under a Good Guard, till Tomorrow, and then between the Hours of one and four o'Clock he be taken out thence and tied to a Post on the Court House lott, and there to have one half of Each of his Ears cutt off and be branded on Each Cheek with the letter .f - M and Receive one hundred lashes well laid on his bare back and that the Sheriff see this order Executed. Davie County Public Ubratj Vmksville, NC N State of North Carolina Rowan County Know all men by these presents that I Alfred McCulloh of the County and State aforesaid for and in the consideration of the sum of Three Hundred and Ninty Dollars to me in hand paid by Elizabeth McCulloh Sen and Henry McCulloh, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, have bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain and sell unto the said Elizabeth McCulloh Sen and Henry McCulloh a certain negro boy by the name of Henderson about ten years old the right and title of which said boy I forever warrant and defend against the claim or claims of any other person or persons. Ordered said New Road added to District of Old Road between Warrin Blounts & the County line below James Morris & same hands & Company which did work on said Old Road under Joseph Williams, Overseer, do open, clear & repair said New Road & that James Wright be Overseer of said District in room of Joseph Williams, John Matchet, being indicted for assault on body of John Powell, submitted to mercy of the Court & was fined.5/ which he paid. Inventory of Estate of Sarah Hall, dee d, returned by Joseph Thomas Rhodes, Esq., one of the Exr'ss Ordered filed. Allowed Richard Cooper, Constable, 16/ for 2 days attendance this Court on Grand Jury. By Order of last Court William Dickson, Francis Oliver, Lavin Watkins were appointed a Committee to divide 9 Negro Slaves, formerly the property of James McCulloh in possession of Catharin Taylor, equally between Penelope, Catharin & Henry, children of said James McCulloh, said Committee to have reference to a Deed of Gift from said James McCulloh to said Penelope, Catharin & Henry, bearing date 15 Sept. 1778 for Negro Slaves Dinah, Hanah, Peggy & Peter with all their future issue & the said Committee finding the increase now to be 5 children, making the number to be 9, have divided into 3 equal lots: Dinah about 25, Chaney about 5, Alleck about 4, Jacob about 1 month - first lott to Heny McCulloh; Hanah about 23, Celia about3, Liddia abouter about 18d -lora Lott to Penelope Barfieldt Peggy to Catharin McCulloh. Mrs.Taylor claiming a right to services of Dinah during her own life by which the Committee consider- ing every cir-1-:_'ince are of the opinion the lotts are of equal value & have attested them as above. Ordered William Guy, infirm man, be exempted in future from working on the high Roads.
