Reverend James C. Rhodes (Methodist minis-
ter) who married a Miss Scott and lived in
Arkadelphia, Ark.; Rachel Rhodes who mar-
ried Rufus Carver: Molly Rhodes who married
Joe Harter and lived in Grant County, Ark.
William Rice Rhodes (1889-1965) was the
son of Richard Rice Rhodes. He married (first)
Martha Jane Wilson and lived in Grant County,
Ark. they had five children: William Cecil,
James C., Jethro M., Hugh Bentley, and
Richard Rhodes. He later married Alice
Buchanan.
Hugh Bentley Rhodes, son of William Rice
Rhodes, married (first) Margaret Wallin
(dec.), and had four children: William Rice,
Joseph B., Richard L. and James W. Rhodes.
His second wife is Betty Davenport and they
have three children: Robert Earl, John Alvin, /
and Hugh Bentley Rhodes, Jr. Bentley Rhodes
lives in Bassett, Arkansas, and is in the insur-
ance business. He has done much research on
the Rhodes, Clinton, and Kenan families.

It is believed that the Rhodes family came to
Duplin and Onslow from Virginia and settled in
the Limestone section of Duplin County prior
to 1748. According to Mrs. Blanche Abee in
her book, "Colonists of Carolina" she states
that Benjamin Rhodes was born in 1720 and.
died in 1805. His father may have been Thom-
as Rhodes. In fact his will is found in the
Duplin County records. He had the following
children: Jacob Rhodes who married Rachel
Clinton, the daughter of Brig. General Richard
Clinton; John Felix Rhodes who married
Dorothy Houston; Mary Rhodes who married
Cahn Brice; Rachel Rhodes who married Abra-
ham Newkirk; Celia Rhodes who married John
Miller; Nancy Rhodes who married a Mr.
Powell; Brig. General Joseph Thomas Rhodes
Who married Mary Williams; and Sarah
Rhodes who married Stephen Brock. Ben-
jamin Rhodes married Rachel Thomas, a
daughter of William Thomas, Sr.
Jacob Rhodes married Rachel Clinton and
lived first at Rhodes' Crossroads in Sampson
County. He was a surveyor. They later moved
to a plantation near Lumberton. He laid out the
town of Lumberton in 1786. He died in 1824.
Jacob Rhodes had one son, Dr. Richard
Clinton Rhodes (1801-1867) who married
Susan Rice Davis (1831-1900) in 1848. She
was the daughter of Absolom and Eliza Russell
Davis. They first lived near Lumberton, N.C. In
1850 Dr. Rhodes migrated to Saline County,
Arkansas. He owned a plantation and practiced
medicine. Dr. and Mrs. Rhodes had the fol-
lowing children: Jesse Rhodes who married
Sara Penzil and lived in Grant County,
Arkansas; Henry Rhodes who married Dena
Jones and lived in Grant County; Jacob
Rhodes, Jr.; Richard Rice Rhodes (1853-
1900) who married Martha Jane Brandon
(1851-1915) and lived in Grant County; The
