Mrs. Robert McCulloh
2429 N. W. 48th Street
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 73112
Dear Mrs. McCulloh:
1135 Kenwood Street
Winston-Salem, N. C. 27103
October 26, 1976
I am in the process of compiling a McCulloh genealogy
and would like your help. Mrs. Eugene D. Bowman sent me
your address. Some McCulloh sisters here in North Carolina
gave me a picture of Robert McCulloh (in uniform). I
believe it may have been your husband. If your husband was
the son of Stokes McCulloh, I need a lot of help with this
branch of the tree. Stokes' father John McCulloh was
brother to James McCulloh, my great grandfather, and to
Charles Granville McCulloh who settled in Arkansas. I have
letters from Stokes McCulloh written to his sister here
in North Carolina, mentioning several of his children.
In the letter he mentioned that Robert McCulloh was a
Presbyterian minister. Mrs. Bowman told me that he was
also the arthur of several books, one dedicated to you.
She had two books, but no extra copies to send to me.
I need all the information you can possibly send me. If
there are individual families you would rather I write to
for their history, could you please furnish me some
addresses.
I know the birth and death date for John McCulloh, his
marriage date, the name of his wife and the name of her
parents. I do not know her date of birth or death. I have
the names of eight children, gathered from the census. There
may have been two or more others. I have the history of one
girl (Sarah J. McCulloh who married a Daniel. They were the
ones who had the letters postmarked Center, Oklahoma.
Stokes mentioned the names of six children. He also mentioned
three daughters whom he did not name.
Any help you might give me would be very much appreciated.
I would love very much to find a picture of Stokes and his
wife and also cE John and his wife. Would you believe I
was lucky enough to find pictures of the parents of John,
James and Charles? Also have picture of James and his wife
and of Charles. Have been promised a copy of the picture of
Charles wives.
It takes a lot of time and work to research a history, but
I enjoy it. .Hope to have a very worthwhile book.
Davie County Public Liurary Sincerely,
moeksville, NC , jf /V '

Dear Alice,
Three of the enclosed. copies were made from news clippings in
Mother's papers - you may already have them. My records aren't
late enough for me to tie Scott into his line. None of these
were dated. but Scott is consid.erably older now, probably married.
Close to time to leave".the library yesterday I randomly looked
through the Oklahoma books and -the first one I pulled out had
the following:
OKLAHOMA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY
Vol. 19 No. 4• Dec. 1974
MicGee Cemetery, Garvin County, Ok.
LOUISA JANE PAC CULLOH

16 Aug. 1921
McGee Cemetery is located 1 1/2 miles north of Stratford
which (Stratford) was originally named. McGee.
The cemetery listing was continued in the next quarterly but,
naturally, the library did not have that one and there was no
further information on 111CCullohS- in vols. 21 - 20. LMV
We went to the lawyer's office yesterday to sign the succession
papers for him to file. We should have the recorded copies by2z
the end of the week. Jimmie has a nibble on his house. The
-
naighbor across the street would. like for her parents to buy it -
and move up here. They live several miles south of Shreveport-''
L
and are getting along in years. She first has" -to convince they o
to move, then to buy. We have been working along getting it
ready to show, but first need to get an appraisal.
-=
The weather in Ok. finally got warm enough for the monument co.
to erect the monument so we will try to go up around Easter and
take flowers. Will either go through or come back through Tulsa

so Jimmie can see his 2 sisters. The younger one was in a taxi

SUBJECT: Some Recent Data. Sheets Received from a work entitled: McCCL UGH
WILLIAM SR OF 1r11GINIA m ANN EVE. Georgia McCcllough Walker (Mrs. J. Ross, Sr. )
NOTE: This work is also pertinent to the family of hoses McCollouph, Sr.,
whose wives were Mary Ellen Freed and Martha Weeks, widow of Solomon
Allred; and to William McCullough whose wife was Lavinia Meyers. Both
of these men lived in Indiana. Doses later to Arkansas.
DATE: January 18, 1987
From work of Mr. Thomas Keele, b. ca. 1880. (died 1972, age 92). Nancy Eleanor
(also spelled "Elincr") McCullough was born in Rockingham Co. N. Car. 13 April
1788. She was the daughter of Thomas and Mary PICKERING McCU1L6JGH, Nancy
Eleanor McCullough ad. Rard John Keele on 18 Sept (no date given in letter
of Louise Keele Hubbell).
Mr. Marcus Vandiver quoting from TENNESSEE CajSINS, by Worth S. Ray, gives j

body of Nancy McCollcugh. I have found no records of the name of this child
which could have been born 1805-1806. I do not infer that it is the Nancy above,
Rebecca McCullough. Since the names of Mrs. Mauksch's ancestress is so similar
to the Rebecca Mc CULLAH in the line of Mrs. Eisden, the comparisons are noted.
I have checked the Rebecca McC alloh, who ad,

who is the son of Henry McCOLLCUGhs Sr. who md. in Rockingham Co., N, Car. on
.7 Oct. 1793, Nancy Jones, daughter of William. Samuel McCollough was a sgt.
in Capt. Cummings 16th Regt. Tennessee Volunteers. 6' tall, light hair, light
blue eyes, fair ccmplections a blacksmith. Lived in Hawkins Co. till 1822, near
Rogersville; moved in 1825 from Greene Co. to Liberty, Union Co., Ind. until 18431,
then near Morocco in Newton Co., Indiana. See RESEp_RCHERS LIST 1983
With this information, it is possible to separate some of the Samuel MCColloughs.
Especially when the wills are checked.
Samuel McCollough, above (descendants seem to use McCULLGUGH), md. Mary LCKG
on 1 Sent. 1819 in Hawkins Co. Damuel died 14 Dec. 1870 in Prairie Cottage,
Newton Co., Indiana. Mary Long McCullough's death date is not given, but the
place is listed as probably Watseka, Indiana. She was born March 102 1800
in Rockingham Co., Virginia.
In 1838, a Samuel McCullough signed on land bought in Hawkins Co., Tennessee by
(beside?) William K. and Rebecca (MeMLLOUGH) Karnes, or is he a witness?
Therefore, this will identify him as a different Samuel from the one above; I
believe this Samuel is not identified completely. Possibly the one p. 26, 1830 census.

I think Clemont and Clinton are
brothers. There should be an 1840

Since Joseph lives near them, he
could be their father.

Referring back to the 1830 census; Those listed on pp. 22,23,24. 26
Is this a family grouping with one of the elderly Josephs (age 68--70)
as patriarch. Children, or rather sons:
William census reading indicates this to be the one who md. Elizabeth Moore
George
Joseph
possibly one other living with Joseph.
Samuel, age 40-50
We have some unidentified marriages, namely:
22 Nov. 1806, KcCULLCUGH, William md. Comfort SLAVENS, Joseph
McCullough, bondsman
1820, 30 Dec. Thomas McCullough to Maria Pinkston, Michael
Myers, bondsman.. (I think this of the lineage of William who
md. Lavinia Myers, removed to Tennessee).
p. 58. McCULLCTJGH, William. This reading would indin' to this coR,M be the
one who married Comfort Slavens,
McCULLOUGH, Jorn, possibly, son of William
Page 42, 44, 45. This is the family grouping found in Bond Co. Ill. later.
Joseph must be their father. If the indication that Clement was born in
Europe is correct, then this family might be dated as emigrating to the U.S.
between 1806-1807. This family should be studied more. (Line of ;the Millers.)
When comparing the 1840 census with 1830, there are many fewer families.
Apparently, the John and William F. are those found on page 58 in 1830.
BLOUNT CCUNTY, TENNESSEE: There are some McCullough families in Blount Co.
who have been unidentified as to origin. One of these is the John
McCullough who married Hannah Boring, and whose son Judge Joseph Lafayette
McCullough was a judge of Criminal Court in Montana, former official of
Gentry Co., Missouri, and a member of the Missouri State Legislature. This
McCullough family might have also been in Daviess Co., Missouri. From Gentry
Co, Missouri, there are also those who use the spelling "McCullah". A Dr.
Joseph McCullah who was in the Union Forces, Civil War, and later removed to
Barry C0.9 Missouri also resided for sometime in Gentry Co. 6r Maviess Co.) .
Years ago, I read this file, but did not keep much pertinent data.
HIST CRY OF CLINTON & CALDWELL CCUTIES, MIS SCURI , p. 740, has another
McCU'LLOUGH FAMILY, which as I understand, descend from an "L.W." McCullough,
a native of Ireland, who came to Missouri during the early days. Had a son
Robert, who md. Martha Turner. Following his death, Martha Turner McCullough
md. Ebenezer Titus. As I understand the article, child no. 3 of L. W.
McCullough was named Clement R. McCullough. (I find no records for these
families in my files. See CMcCN Y3, I1, p.12, Missouri issue)
Mrs. Eisden: I do not know that this is very relevant to you, but the name
Penelope occurs in the family of Mrs. Mauksch. Also, in another family in
Arkansas, that of Robert who first seems to have lived in Wayne Co. Mo. It
is not a very usual name;
I am still plodding away at my own lineage. In the past two years, have found
older brothers of my great—grandfather, and have been in touch with descendants
of each line. Still missing the eldest son, and all the females!
