Thanks for the land. division of James. Charles was left $30.00 in James'es will. Charles of 1804 and 1806 Rowan Co. land purchase, then sale, the son of James? The land he bought 1804 adjoined that of James. As to history of your family, I would like for you to start with Goshen. Do you think we will ever get satisfactory ans- wers to all of our questions? I mull over our research and the questions it raises hoping to get a burst of illumination but nothing is forthcoming. The illegitimate children - who did they belong to, and who fathered them? Why did not the unmarried. daughters leave their land to their offspring. Was there more than one illegitimate (Larry)? I have been compiling chronological census charts on each in- dividual which points out the areas where I have lost them in the census records. Some have been found, but others are still hiding somewhere. Because the 1880 census did. not list families who did not have any children under 5 years of ages there can be a 30 year gap (1870-1900) in trying to find them. Scores probably died during that time, and others moved on. Before I forget, Oklahoma Historical Society is gathering informa- tion on the early pioneers and will issue a Pioneer Certificate. Since Byron McCulloh is a direct descendant, I sent him an applica- tion form but it came back yesterday, marked. "unable to deliver". In the time of James of Camdey, , Ireland. was an undivided country* The marriage of our Henry to Penelope Eustace after the birth of all of their children is a puzzle. Penelope and her children did not seem to socially suffer from family and friends if she was Henry's mistress and the children illegitimate. It seems there had to be more than we are able to learn. St. Marylebone is the name of the church where Henry E. and. Udall married - we went by it on our tour. Wishz I had known about it then for we may have been able to look at the original church records. They pronounce it as Mar' -y, not as Merry as we do. Henry was about 52 years old when he married. She could. have been younger and remarried. Something else to check. I'm enclosing the James McCulloh wills - none show a James as as son axaxp#. The spelling changes of McCulloh to McCulloch to McCullough for the same person causes confusion, especially when two James McCullohs flourished. during the same time, one dying in 1812, the other in 1816. Other records could overlap and be confusing as to which one it pertained. I tried to get a translation for Henry's references in French concerning Molly and the "youngster". I've had. no French and. my dictionary did. not give "Pearelle" . Intended to look at the Davie County Pudic (-1t0Y9,,. mocksville, NO library yesterday but got busy with other things and did. not get down to that floor. The first seems to be "so much the better" (tant mieux) but pearelle has me stumped. Tant pis (too bad). Can you enlighten me? By March 17731 George, about 10 years old., was to be cared. for by David. Barron of Newbern, and Henry E. was still financially caring for him. This may indicate that Molly (?Mary Cook) had married. He seemed. to be concerned in speaking of Molly and the youngster to "remember that those folks are my friends". What folks? The.Cooks? Archibald. Frew was said to have married. Mary Cook. If sot and she married him ca. 1773, then the may have been his first wife, she died., and then in 1806 he married ( 2 ) Ann S. Cowan. If this is the same Archibald Frew, then he must have been up in years when he married Cowan. This, of course, is speculation on my part. I also had noticed the marriage to Cowan in the microfiche but had not found a record. for a Frew -Cook marriage• When I was at the Mormon library here, I found no records for Middlesex County in England. The last batch brought me included one that had some McCulloughs but I did not see any possible connection to anyone in our line. The lady who brought it was excited for she hoped that it would be my line - we all know the lines that each of us is interested in and. keep an eye open for any help. Reviews will be published. in The Journal, our quarterly, and will be donated (books) to Shreve Memorial Library within two weeks after the fair and. seminar. We are trying to get all of the reviews done as quickly as possible. Have received. over 200 books so far, isn't that wonderful! Our little club is working hard to grow, and to provide a service. One is on the area of DUNDALK but the dates do not help on the older McCullohs. In this same book I found what may be the answer to Old Henry and. Penelope's marriage(s). Although it is on Ireland, it probably pertained to the British Isles as well: p viii: "Until 1782 marriages between dissenters, celebrated by their ministers, were illegal. Until 1844 a marriage be- tween a dissenter and a member of the Established Church was considered illegal if performed by a dissenting minister. Prior to the Burial Act of 1868 which permitted dissenting ministers to conduct burial services, the Church of Irialand clergy held jurisdiction over funeral services for Protestants, Right up to the mid -nineteenth century it is not uncommon to find Presbyterian ministers and Methodist preachers buried in a Church of Ireland cemetery. Clearly,'if you know (have) Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist, Congregational or Quaker ancestry, it is essential that you do not overlook the Church of Ireland registers." This may explain that Henry and Penelope were married by a Dissenting Minister, and their marriage after they returned to England was an endeavor to make it legal by English laws. And allowed them to be buried according to the Church laws where above it refers to the Burial Act of 1868. You will recall that in one letter included in the Iredell papers, one of the McCulloh women referred to "My Aunt McCulloh". I learned (and you probably already know this) that when an aunt was referred to in that fashion, it meant that she was not an aunt by blood. Because of the date, I feel that she was re- ferring to Penelope. I read through several 1870 NC counties (Davie, Duplin and Davidson) trying to locate William Stokes, Amanda (she may have married by then) and Hetty, children of John and Hetty, but could not find them. Found Henry, Eliza, Elizabeth, Lindsey but not the other 3. Surely there was a guardianship record for them - for those under 21, anyway. I did not find their mother in 1870 and assume she had died by then. I wish we could get together in order to see where we stand, and where to fill in. I know that you have information that I don't, and I have census records that you possibly do not have. I have been trying to get themlall located in the census records as much as possible, then type mine up, and send you my handwritten pages for THE BOOK. :ti 'vv►t Public Library mocksville, NC -2- I tried to find James, son of Alfred, in 1880 but could not locate him, either. He is not in the soundex since he had no child 5 years old or younger. I Read Davie Co. Twps. of Jerusalem, Mocksville and Fulton without any success. Did not have time yesterday to read the whole county - he may have been in Tyro, or some other twp. Bubba Burks sent me the Obit on Charles G. McCulloh and I'm enclosing a copy for you. Did you tell me one time that you have a baby picture of Charles Granville? If so, I would like to borrow it to have copied. I keep going through my McCulloh family group sheets to see where they are missing in the census records and try to fill in, but think that as of this date I am at a standstill. If you have any suggestions, or hints, for me to follow on any of the research, let me know and I will see what I can do. Hope your family dinner went well - know they enjoyed seeing your new home. I've been doing a lot of typing for Friends of Genealogy - m4a king a master card file of another society's journals. I typed 277 cards in 3 days last week and it left me drained. They threaten to bring more, and also some more books for me to review. I am learning a lot, and have signed up as a volunteer for the archives at LSU Library, Shreveport. Don't know yet what my assignment will be as there are several needs. Friends of Genealogy is having its first book fair and seminar April 22nd and that is taking all of our time right now so will go to the library after that is over. I may also be leauing computers (our FOG President has a research and printing business and has offered to teach me which I need to learn to do, praying for brains enough to learnM) . Now, if I could just learn to type without errors! Hope to hear from you soon. Love, Encls: Irish Research Hints Obit - Charles Granville McCulloh Davie County Public Library Niocksville, NG 9415 Primrose Shreveport, LA 71118 27 June 1989 Dear Alice: Thanks for all of the Houston material and the letter from Agatha. In my Houston file I had a book review on the Maxwell line that included families of Houston, McCullough and Walker (see enclosed). I have written Agatha a note, sending her the enclosures that I am enclosing for you in this letter. I will leave it up to you as to whether or not to send copy of Henry's will. You paid so much for your copy, English research, that I feel it is your choice about You have corresponded with Agatha and I feel that you research capabilities, and whether she is cooperating or has plans to go out on her own re. publishing. Agatha a and the what to do. know her with you Cleora Hudson's comment that old Henry owned a fleet of sailing vessels is the first I have heard of that. It is too bad that she did not include any sources in her letter. The James McCulloh in Hempstead Co. AR i unknown to me. You will recall that Harriet stated that she was confused about James McCulloh, thinking that ours was the one in Tennessee. Perhaps Hempstead James came out of this line. I hope that you get your cabinets installed all right. I need shelves and a good desk. You would wonder that I keep anything straight at all if you could see my crowded corner. Also included in my letter to Agatha was therame and address of Mrs. Louise S. Bauer 31 VillaAe in the Woods Southern Pines, NC 28387 Her inquiries into the Houston and McCulloch lines were in the 1981 and 1984 volumes of Index of North Carolina Ancestors. Have you heard of her? Must get lunch on the table. We awoke this a.m.. to find water coming down the flue above our stove in the kitchen, courtesy of storm Allison. A new roof apparently left a flaw around the roof outlet above the stove. The roofer came and did temporary job to divert the water until it dim domes enough to hold mastic and a repair job. We kept our cool through it all but had to cancel Gene's appointment with the doctor for lab work and check-up, and I had hoped that he would have time to look at my right ear and throat. Maybe next time. Love, Public Library Davis County .mooksvillet NG -2 - I know there are a lot of things that I intended to write before this, and to answer your latest letters. Nay mind has been so torn up over Gene's aunt and what we can do to help - if it isn't phone calls it is letters. We had her settled twice here and her sister where she lives now interferred, had her come to Tulsa and now she is trying to get rid of her saying she is no longer able to take care of her in the way that she needs. Of course, the sister doesn't want her to feel she is trying to get rid of her but what else can one call it? Everyone wants to be Mr. Nice Guy and leave the arrangements up to someone else. Well, enough of that, Sure wish our library had more Irish information. I can't feel but that the civil -church marriages for Henry and Penelope may be the right track. In the old days the national religion changed according to the beliefs of the -,:-.king or queen. Our guide said that the design of the churches was never allowed to be changed in order that they could become either anglican or catholic overnight as the reigning monarch determined which religion would be followed. I feel that the James who died 1749 was the father of our James. I looked again in the Col. Rec. N.C. Vol. 4 11,@Q,_toy..s.ee- whether there was an addregs to Henry butitididn't. According to the chart I assembled, Old Henry came to Charleston, S.C. in March of 1741 and returned to England in 1747. This indicates that he married Penelope in England. Also, this would seem to indicate that nonz,;...of.his children were born in America. To say positively, we would have to have actual birth dates. Also, from various records, it looks as though both Penelopes died in 1767. The Iredell papers indicate this. Henry Eustace returned to Eng. in 1767 due to the death of his sister Penelope (Iredell) and the letters in those papers indicate that Aunt Penelope was seridusly ill at that time. You are right about the Lawrence ancestor marrying the man who paid her passage. I recall sending you a copy of an article on the Lawrence family that was printed in "History of Tennessee - 30 East Tennessee Counties". "The Lawrence family, in America, are descended from an Irish girl, who, in crossing the Atlantic, was sold to pay her passage, to a man who afterward married her. Of four boys, Abbot and William Lawrence, the rioted -cotton manufacturers of Lowell, Mass, are descendants of those who staid (sic) in Massachusetts, and the others went to Georgia". If you can't find your copy, I'll send you another. This article is the one quoted in the Lawrence papers that you sent me. The articles you have sent really help in my search as they con- firm what I find and helps me know who to look for. R$xd Glad I can be of help on the Barfields. Will keep looking. He was in the hospital until Feb. 28th, now at home receiving therapy so he can manage stairs and steps. dhen he can, then he will go for out-patient treatments at the hospital. It affected his left side, speech, walking, etc. He has not been able to accept it as yet, that he cannot do the work as CPA yet (may never be able to). Mary is confident that he will be able to walk without help, eventually, but is unsure about the rest of his recovery unless he begins to cooperate on his treatments. You remember that at least one version of the McCulloh history contained the term "reddendo" and this man explained it this way: REDDENDO: Burgh officials retained income from petty customs in exchange for feu duties or reddendo paid to the crown. (feu=fee) . WADSETTERS: Semi-owner/occupiers between laird.s and tenants, those who as creditors occupied land as a security in return for the loan of money and. received. the rents (Cheape 1983)- (Creditors 983).(Creditors of a landowner enjoying use of the estates) (Moody -1986) . I think that Alexander McC and Sarah Hill had only 2 children, BENJAMIN and MARY. The grandchildren named in Alexander's will are the same children named in Texas DAR, and in the Ardwall material, as children of Benjamin McC and Sarah Stokes. Benjamin and Mary may have already gotten their part and that is why they are not named in their father's will. Benjamin died intestate -- we need his probate. Alexander Frohock apparently was the son of Mary MCC and William Frohock. Did Mary and William stay in this country? I've gone over the latest papers you sent several times/and agree with you that the DAR records are incorre t in regard to the children of Ben, Jr. and Sarah Lytle Caswell. The children's birth dates would place them as the issue of Benjamin McC and Sarah (?Jones). Here we run into another snag: Is Benjamin with the 14 children the son of Ben and Sarah Caswell? DAR and Ardwall show him marrying a Susan Pace (?Place). Acklen's "Bible Records...." did not give the maiden name of Benjamin who married Sarah , who had Adelaide, etc. What we need are more wills and/or probates, land ownership de- scent, etc to prove lineages. It is a real Headache:::: Every source has a glaring discrepancy and I would venture that DAR no longer accepts applications based upon the prior membership lineages. I'm sending some McCulloh info that one of my Pate sources located for me in Oklahoma. We don't have enough on OK here to be a great help. There will be more cemetery pictures to send later but if I don't get this off now, I never will. His tombstone inscrip- tion reads, "James McWillie, of Newton -Hamilton, died December 18, 1808, age 48." The second child of John McWillie, Henrietta Churchill McWillie, born 1762, married the Reverend William Reid of Vincash and Richill in Ireland, but they had no children. Adam McWillie, the third child of John McWillie, was born in 1766. He fell in love with Ann McCullough, the daughter of James McCullough and Annie Beall. aures an nrue a lough lived in the Kershaw District in South Carol- ina before the Revolution. Annie Beall McCullough, whose father was a Royal- --is— t, died quite young and her daughter, Ann, born December 18, 1768, was raised by her maternal grandmother until the grandmother's death. James McCullough married a second time and had several more children. James McCullough was a Royalist. It is said James' older brother was shot and killed by one of Marion's men as he was entering his own door and he fell dead among his family. James McCullough was disillusioned with the new United States and after the Revolu- tion returned to the home of his ancestors in Ireland, taking his family, includ- ing Ann, with him. He seems to have been a man of considerable wealth. After remaining in Ireland a few years, he again became dissatisfied, and as he would not return to the United States, he went to Canada where he lived to be a very old man. While living in Ireland Ann McCullough and Adam McWillie decided to marry, but John McWillie was opposed to his son marrying an American girl. Even worse, Adam McWillie wanted to leave Ireland and come to the United States. He saw no future for himself as a second son. His father would not allow him to go into the English army. Adam was determined and finally John consented for Adam to marry Ann McCullough. They were married in 1787 and their first child, Sarah, was born in Ireland on June 6, 1788. Adam was still determined to come to the United States. Finally his father agreed, but would only give him a sufficient amount of money for passage to America and back to Ireland. John was convinced that Adam and Ann would not like the United States and that they would shortly return to Ireland. John McWillie was at Belfast when Ann, Adam, and their small daughter, Sarah, boarded a vessel bound for Charleston, South Carolina. At the last moment John McWillie unbuckled his sword and gave it to Adam with the prayer that he would uphold its honor and keep the name untarnished. The sword is still a family pos- session owned today by Miss Suenette Dinkins of Jackson, Mississippi. John McWillie's hope for Adam's disillusionment with the United States and his return to Ireland was never realized. James McCullough still owned an exten- sive tract of land in the- Kershaw District of South Carolina and he gave Ann McCullough McWillie this tract of land.17 They settled on the McCullough land near Liberty Hill in Kershaw District, South Carolina. Adam had been trained as a civil engineer. Civil engineers and surveyors were much in demand in Amer- ica, and in thirteen years Adam had amassed a fortune equal to the one he would 16Johnson, Genealogy of the McWillie Family, pp. 14-15. She was still living 1?92, many, many years after Henry, S.P., died. You will recall that Iredell wrote in 1778 or 1784 that only two of the daughters were still living, Dolly and Betsey. I take these to be Dorothy Berisford and Elizabeth Margaret. According to Iredelli, Betsey married Capt. Jos. Meredith. In The Commoners of Great Brittain and Ireland - Burke, the following marriage appears and I have wondered if Dorothea Beresford was the daughter of Henry, S.P. McRee got them from Iredell's papers. I'm still not convinced that our James was o/w son of old Henry, or that Henry and Penelope's children were illegitimate. I think their marriage after returning to England was to conform to the English laws at that time, and to protect any inheritance that might otherwise be jeopardized. The whole family of McCullohs, McCartneys and. Ired.ells seemed to hold old Henry and his wife, especially, in esteem. It would seem unusual for them to feel that way toward those of lesser moral standards, or birth. There also is that unidentified. Aunt Amy McCulloh who sent James the annuity. Now, about GROGAN vs CREGAN. The Townlands/Towns index for Ireland gives 5 Grogans and 1 Gr6ggan. The one that interests me is GROGGAN, Co. Antrim, Upper Toome Barony, Drummaul Parish. Once I questioned whether Brandalston could really be Randalston. In this index there is RANDALSTON, Co. Antrim, Upper Toome Barony, Drummaul Parish. There is no Camdey listed in the index. In the INDEX TO THE PREROGATIVE WILLS OF IRELAND 1536-1810 there is shown: 1682 M'CULLOCH, WILLIAM, Raneldstown, Co. Antrim, Esq. 1725 M' CULLOCK, JAMES, Baroney of Tome, C o . I would ask him to check on these. He has never "taken up" anytime I have mentioned my interest in researching Northern Ireland. Could you straighten something out for me? In previous corres- pondence it was stated that the English genealogist had found JANE LETITIA and LETITIA ALICE (McCulloch?) buried at St. Nicholas, Chiswick, and that LETITIA ALICE was identified as "a stranger from London". There is another reference a few lines later that state that Henry, S.P.'s daus JANE and LETITIA were christened at St. John, Smith Square, Westminster, and buried there. Are these the same children as those said to be buried at Chiswick? There is still the statement by Harriet McCulloch, and by the Barfield descendants, that, (paraphrase) (1) The father of Alfred (James) , was a first cousin to George; ands; (2) That James McCulloh who married Catharine Taylor was an orphan raised by his paternal grandparents. Thus, the father of George (Henry Eustace) and the father of James (??) were brothers. jjb to AHE 11 Feb 1991 -3- Have you been able to locate the woman who had Alfred's Bible? You wrote that she divorced and remarried. Surely there is someone • who knows where she is. Adilou celebrated her 80th birthday and Mason and Iris their 50th wedding anniversary close together so Anna Dene and Flora came down from New York. We arrived close together at the airport in Memphis so that made it easier for Andy and Beck to meet us. That night Andy had everyone at his house for supper - Preston and his family came up from Memphis = Mason the only one missing. The next day, Saturday the 30th, Andy drove.- all rove.- all of us to Pine Bluff to join in the celebra- tion for Mason and Irises 50th wedding anni- versary- there were 18 Pate-McCulloh descendants representing our side. They repeated their vows and it really was nice. Anna Dene brought her video camera and so we have a record of the visit. She is to make copies for us. Then on the 6th Dec., Andy and Becky took us to Batesville and we had a mini McCulloh reunion at Mildred and James Elms. Most of Mildred's family came both days, and James and Winifred Morgan (Kate McCulloh) drove up from Texas to be with us. We really had a good time. Irises sister drove Mason and Iris up for one day so all of us were together two different times - the first in many, many years - and probably the last• Mason, Adilou and Preston are in failing physical condition and it hurts to see them getting that way. (2) Wonder why William D. McCulloh was listed as a farmer in the 1850 Mississippi census? He was in Mocksville "to read law" under Judge, Pearson. Maybe he didn't finish, or didn't get license and probably did not have a license for Mississippi. Wonder if Mariah Elizabeth (Georges wife) went to Mississippi and came back to N. C.? You found her in Rowan County in 1860. Mrs. Agner said she was buried at Emmanuel Luthern Church at Lincolnton, N. C. I'll see if I can find more about that -birth date, death date, will, etc. I see William named his oldest son George. Wonder where the other names came from? Who was George W. Thomas. Maybe Elizabeth was a Thomas and this was her brother. Could they have married in Mississippi? I have not seen a copy of George's will, but will try to find it. Mrs. Agner said a lady in Memphis, Tenn, Ann Iredell McCulloh had the Bible record and a picture of George and Mariah. Wouldn't it be great to have a copy of those? She mentioned—six gir—Es--and a boy. I wonder about that. We need 2 more girls. Agner had also picked up somewhere Charles but said she wasn't sure. It may be that he died young. Wish I had had a tape recording of that conversation. I believe she may have had contact with Helen Daniels Eaton of Mocksville, as I feel Sadie might have given Helen a copy of Harriet's letter - so I am wary of Agner. I know Helen and some of the Daniel boys are good to the old ladies - and I would not dare tell them how I feel toward Helen. Letitia Alice was referred to as buried June 9, 1753, St. Nicholas, Chiswick, as "stranger from London". (9) .Just had a thought. If that Henry we saw from Dublin was ours, maybe he married in Ireland. The Genealogist did -not find them in Ireland, said it was too far out of his district,*too expensive to go there and he didn't give me anything on James of Grogan. He never identified Grogan - though he wondered about that. _ (10) No, I do not have the Daniel history. ? Josiah Daniel, son of Elizabeth Just have • and William Daniel -(Your info Jincy Daniel m. I think Homer and Samuel went back to Texas when they were grown and Texanna Houston Barnett went to Kansas or Algin, Oklahoma. I also picked up the marriage date o Rebecca and M John Pate from your _"Gleanims". Thanks! I do not know that it ever was. ?Fill try to check a few more of t::Ese records on tUs family. 14ill'also check to see if I can find the address of the lady above to see what she has. Of oourse, it is possible, I think, to see the file which is reserved for the WR genealogists which contains the sworn records.
