C. 27103 March 2, 1986 I don't know what to think of the last material I sent you. Doubt if it will help us any. How I got it is very interesting. Think I told you once that my Aunt Rosa and John McCulloh worked on the family history long ago. I always heard from Mother that Aunt Rose helped him search and research but that he had the material. All through the years, when anyone would inquire about it, his family pled ignorance of it and swore they didn't have it and did not know where it was. I have never exactly believed them. Once I went to see Frank and got the usual negative answers. When I left, told him tradition said we were descended from Henry the land owner but I doubted it as there were a lot of George Washingtons running around not related to the President. There was a Henry Eustace in our family and also one in their family - more recent. He said but we really were descended from Henry. Now how did he "know" or what made him think so? Well, this year a granddaughter of John wrote and said she was trying to finish what her grandfather had started and wanted help in connecting our family to Henry Eustace. She would leave at her aunts in Lexington the material she had. You see what she left, all things that had been published about McCullohs by various spellings in various books but no personal information. Those few letters written 1911 to and from McCullohs. If they saved a couple, why not a lot more? I told Aunt Viegh last week that I found it hard to believe that someone would save a few random letters and not all of them. Aunt Viegh said there was a big thick book at Aunt Rose's home when she died (her copy) but she did not have the forethought to ask for it. Aunt Rose's husband remarried a lady from Mocksville. At one time Aunt Rose built a house on Grandpa's lot with understanding all would go to her when Grandmother died. Aunt Rose's husband (John Hodges) and his new wife (her idea) decided they wanted the house then and Grandmother was still living. There was a court case and Grandmother won - outright. I don't know the legal aspects of it but family was planning to give him home when Grandmother passed away. Maybe since it was to go to Aunt Rose at Grandmother's death and Aunt Rose was already d% -'!.ed - anyway they did not consider a former husband an heir. All this to say that every antique or family item (as well as that history) disappeared, because new wife was bitter. They had spent a lot of time and money on lawyers and lost everything. I believe there was a lot more history and I hope it survives somewhere. I would like to know about the Clicks, the Minolas - who that Uncle George was in Tennessee - many questions. That Cloey is really baffling. Since Henry was born in 1777, his mother must have died that year or next and James could have remarried to Cloey in late 1778 or early 1779 to enable her to be wife at time of land transaction. Do you think he was married to Cloey for a very short V) time and she died also and he married Elizabeth or do you think Cloey could be a nickname for Elizabeth or a middle name? If Cloey had children which ones? Wonder if he married Elizabeth in Sampson or Duplin and moved 31 to Rowan. I was going through some papers, trying to find my copy of first known land grant to James in Rowan (haven't found it yet -think it was around 1790 -got detoured reading some other things. More from Mrs. McCubbin's notes:-. A letter from Dr. J. W. McCullock D.C., Oh.C. of Lexington, N. C. on March 30, 1922, says he knows nothing of -an Eliza Lock who married John McCulloh. John is a family name since the 13th century. A John was drowned in the Tenn. River about the year'1863 but he doesn't know if he -were married. Another John was -killed in Davie Co., N. C. near the Turrentine School House about the year -1850, but it belongs to the Goshen McCulloch family and not in his gemology. Mr. Goshen McCulloh can'tell all about it - his address- Mocksville,-route # 4. (I imagine. that is the murder told about in Tim Veatch home.) In Registrar's office, Salisbury, N. C., Book 4, page 248. * Can you imagine the gall of that man. Why didn't he tell Mrs. McCub bins ow much kin he was to Goshen. Brothers. Anyway, I found the murder of John McCulloh at the Turrentine School by the school teacher, -Martin. McCulloh was unarmed and Martin shot him down. There were witnesses. McCulloh-went there to tell him he -was not fit to teach school evidently. I wonder who the murdered man was in Tom Veatch home. Veatch was our John's .father- in- law . Davie Co. Record of July 18, 1928. Mr. Goshen McCulloh died at his home on South Main Street Sunday evening about 10 -o'clock following an extended illness aged 75 years. The funeral services were held yesterday morning at 11 o'clock --and the body laid to rest in Fork Graveyard-. Mr. McCulloh is survived by -his widow, three sons and 6 daughters, 3 brothe ri, one sister. (This is 2 of- a tract which Jacob - Lawrence let James Hart have and he let the said McCulloh have), Mr. Larry McCulloh is the illegitimate, his letter says,. He married about 47 years ago Milly Jane Phelps who lived not far from Jerusalem'in"Davie Co., N. C. They had 9 children, three of whom are dead. %t _ I don't have this family information. Mr. Hobson says that the McCulloh family. about 1857 -consisted -of Alfred, Jim, Henry, and John. Alfred's son Charles is still living in Texas. Henry lived unmarried with John Click most of his life and while smart was somewhat unusual. He was drowned in their spring where it is thought he may have leaned to take a drink of water and falled in a faint. Jim McCu] McCulloh's sons were Charles and Goshen (the latter is well informed about the family and his address is Mocksville, Rt.''4. Mrs.-`Turner`'Grant's mother may have been.a McCulloh. Richard Parker married M. E. Grant. i It was told that as the girls didn't seem particularly attractive to -the opposite sex and failed to marry, they became uneasy about their royal blood expiring and resorted to other means , using her McCulloh name for the offspring. * There is that reference to "royal" blood again. Hiram Fraley was a school teacher and Mr. Hobson went to him. He had a son Rob who was deaf and peculiar, was a sort of photographer. Tom Veach lived at the Muster Ground -someone was found dead there after a drunken spree and there was suspicion of him - before the Civil War. Daniels lives there now. Veaches Muster Ground is where the fight between Pearson and Bryan occurred to decide whether the soldiers should be led by Tory or Rebel and Pearson won. He said it would take about 3 weeks for him to go through all of the notes he made and get it to me. He was quite impress- ed with what he found on Henry Eustace McCulloh and seems to think that Henry E. is the father of James. He couldn't put his finger on just what information gave him that idea. I didn't tell him but I think that is wrong because of the letter of condolence to,,old Henry on the loss of his son. Anyway, he will includepin what he sends me later so I will see what gave him that idea. He did not mention old Henry nor did I, ever. From the way he talked, I think he has found.Or the information that you have had as he got a lot of it at s do'l the archives. He went on to South Carolina so didn't have SLA as much time in the North Carolina records as he would have liked. Enclosed is a copy of Charles G. McCulloh's CSA record in Co. D 7 Battn., Ark. I noticed that the roster referred to the unit as "Provisional Army Confederate States". I finally heard from NC Archives regarding request for a copy of Henry E.'s deed to James McCulloh, and I quote: "We have checked the grantor/grantee indexes to Duplin County deed books without finding this transaction from Henry Eustace McCulloh to Henry Cannon. We have checked also all the possible pages you gave us for book D without finding this deed (there are no deeds recorded in the Duplin County deed books here at the Archives before 1780)" "This may be a record which is at the Secretary of State Land Grant Office, 300 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, NC 27603." Apparently they picked up the name Henry Cannon when, at their first reply, I sent page 3 of the deed so they could see how the original was recorded. I guess it doesn't make any differ- ence since they do not have it for that period. I have written the land grant office so will wait to hear from them. Sure hope we can get a legible copy. Aunt Sadie broke her leg and was in the hospital 2 weeks. She is back in the nursing home which is more dismal than ever. We went last night and is really depressing to me to see her like that. Hope you are OK. Their residence would not have been the impressive stone tower that we see today, for that was not built until the late fifteenth century. Rather, they would have resided in timber buildings perched on the summit of the earthen motte-and-bailey castle mound - the - characteristic defensive construction of a Norman lord - that can still be seen behind the farm of Boreland of Anwoth, a little to the west of this tower. The McCullochs were a powerful Galloway family and prominent sup- porters of the Balliol family, one of whom, John, became fora short, sad e while King of Scots. One Patrick r McCulloch appeared before Edward III m of England to protest on behalf of John's son, Edward Balliol, against the possible release of David Il shortly after the defeat of the Scottish host at 1 Neville's Cross in 1346. The most not - Ix able of the McCullochs, however, was Alexander, who became laird in 1509. tFour years previously, he had been b appointed Keeper of the Palace of Lin - i; : lithgow; he was also custodian of the t king's falcons and the sporting interests h ofthis'SandeMakculloch'won him 35s 1,3 Scots from the king himself in a wager at •}:tithe archery butts. Distant by see from Wirkington in Englonde tuenty-tuo myles' The history of the McCulloch family is marred by accounts of misdemeanours great and small and it was the financial misdeeds of William McCulloch from 1592 onwards that eventually led to the mortgaging of the estates of Myreton and Cardoness in 1622. By 1629 the estate was disnoned irredeemablv to he seems not to have taken up resid- ence at the castle, preferring to stay at a house known as Bush o' Bield near Anwoth (demolished in 1827). By 1668 Alexander McCulloch was back in residence at the tower, having been forced to sell the property of Myreton. Neither he n6r his son, Godfrey, appear to have accepted the Gordons' right to the estate and both committed deeds of violence in their attempts to win the estate back. The father was heavily fined and imprisoned for assaulting Marion Peebles, widow of Gordon of Cardoness, in 1668, whilst she lay ill in her bed, dragging her out of the house and leaving ber on a dung -hill where she subsequently died. The son shot and fatally wounded Gordon at the latter's house at Bush o' Bield. Sentenced to death, he was amongst the last to perish on 'The Maiden' - the old Scottish equi- valent of the guillotine. Text C J Tabraham, B.A., F.S.A.
