they located on the farm of 450 acres, one mile west of Whiteaburg, their present home.
He has a beautiful two story brick residence,
near which is one of the largest and finest
springs in Hamblen County. He was deputy sheriff of Jefferson County

several years,
before the war, and also followed merchandising a few years, but farming has occupied
the most of his
attention. He has a family of six sons and two daughters, as follows:

nnd, it youth, located on Bent Creek-within the presentlimits of Hamblen County,
where
he married Sarah Hoskins, whose patents then resided on the farm now owned by
Rufus F. Taylor. There
they resided on Bent Creek, near Bays Mountain, until their
respective deaths, in 1842 and 1838.
Garret Lane, farmer, was born in 1818, in Jefferson (now Hamblen) County, where he
has since resided and been engaged in farming

all his life. When twenty-two he began
for himself,, and now owns 190 acres of fine land. October 10, 1839, he married Lucinda,
at daughter of William Maskell, a native of Tennessee,. Their children are Lewis, Pheba
C., Wiilium. Catharine, Dfalinda J.,
James R., John W., Mary E., Isaac A., Sarah A. and
cTarret '%I. He is a Republican, and Brat voted for Harrison.
He is the fifth of eleven
children of Isaac and Rebecca (Scruggs) Lane, natives of Jefferson and Greene Counties
respectively.
The father was constable for several years, and was the son of Tidence
Lane, a no+ive of North Carolina, and for man yyears ajustice

of the peace. The Lanes
are of Ergli=h stock, and Tidence and his wife lived to be about ninety Year, of age,
the family i ting for
noted longevity. They were among the best farmers in the county.

Jol:n Lawrence, farmer, lawyer and minister, was born September 23, 1834, in Jeffer-
son (now Hamblen) County,
and received both an academic and collegiate education.
From his fifteenth year he had the
management of his father's interests, until the
latter's death. On February 23, IBM, he married Collie, a daughter of James
