Miss Flossie Martin
Davie County Public Library
Box 158
Mocksville, North Carolina, 27028
Dear Miss Flossie:
You wrote asking about McCulloh information for the historic
map of Davie'County which Mr. Fred Hughes is in the process of
making.
You mentioned having an abstract of a will by James McCulloh
probated in 1816. That is the correct McCulloh. His heirs
were the first McCullohs to be in Davie County. Since he died
before Davie County was formed, he never lived in Davie - but
his wife and children were in that section of Rowan County which
became Davie. His wife Elizabeth, his sons Alfred, Henry
Eustace, John, his daughters Penelope (McCulloh) Menolly,
Henrietta (McCulloh) Haden, his grandson James McCulloh were
the first of the McCullohs to live in Davie. William Haden was
a large land owner and only a portion of that represented
Henrietta's inheritance from her father. The James McCulloh
who died in 1816 left part of his estate to a minor son Henry
Eustace. Henry Eustace became of age in 1827 but the estate was
not divided until 1834. Rebecca (McCulloh) Pate promptly sold
hers to her brother Alfred - who within the same year sold it
to his father-in-law. I have not yet worked out for you the
exact ownership or rather boundaries and acreage in 1837. They
were early taxpayers in Capt. Bessents Company - and a little
later were in Liberty Company.I did not write down for you the
name of the tax taker year by year. Several of these deeds
refer to land inherited from James McCulloh (1816) on the waters
of Weavers Creek. The Secretary of State is sending me copies of
the grants from State of North Carolina to James McCulloh of Rowan.
. There were several James McCullohs and I always try to give some
u information to identify that one I am referring to I hope this
sketchy information will be of some help. If Mr. Hughes has the
time to spare, I will get more specific information for him.
Sincerely,
V
