I thought all bastard children were known by the mother's name. Maybe she was a McCulloh. Besides naming his daughter Penelope, the name of his natural father's wife's name. He names his son Henry McCullah. "When the ligitimate (sic) son Henry Eustace McCullah sells, the illegitimate James McCulloh some of his land and cousin James Irdell (sic) signs as a witness. Later his agent Thomas Frohock sold James more of Henry Eustice's land and cousin Alexander McCulloch is there to witness. Looks like James was accepted in the family. "I found Henry McCulloch secretary of the Province died in Bertie Co. and left not two daughters, but four, with two names each. "I found this note about James Murry inviting Henry McCulloh to stay in his house. It doesn't say he accepted. He gave his North Carolina address Sarecta a town he started on the East bank of the Cape Fear River on a hundred acres of Dr. William Houston's land, and in Duplin Co. "I'll try to find a marriage bond for Margaret McCulloch and George Muller since I know they were in Bertie Co. Their son Stephen Miller married Winifred Whitfield of Bertie Co. "If I find anything else, I'll let you know. Happy McCulloh looking, signed Mary Carr White." NATIVES AND NEWCOMERS: The Way We Lived in North Carolina before 1770. Elizabeth H. Fenn and Peter H. Wood. F. 5n: Jamc 1:.n'ra;j settled in Wilmington, then called Newton in the 1730s and set himself up as a merchant with a house adjoining his store.... " Marray invited Henry McCulloh to stay in his house in 1741 and ascribed its accomodrtions (described?): 'In my house there is a large room 22 by 16 feet, the most airy of any in the country, two tolerable lodging rooms and a closet upstairs & garrets above, a cellar below divided into a kitchen with an oven and a store for liquors, provisions, etc. This makes one half of my house. The other, placed on the east end, is the store. Cellar below the store and touting house on the first floor, & a bove it its partioned off into four rooms, but this end is not plastered but only done with rough boards. Wit: Alexander McCulloh, Wm. "Dear Rowanda: 11..When Johnston and Dobbs were governors, they lived in New Hanover Co., so I am sure most of the Province business was there. So maybe Henry McCulloch, Esq. Eidson, 1135, Kenwood Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. U.S. A. 27103 Dear Mrs. Eidson, Thank you for your letter of 2nd September with its enclosures. I write to say that after rather a long haul I have found the Will of Henry Eustace McCULLOH. It is dated 1st Nov. 1803 and was proved at London in April 1812 by Udell McCULLOH his widow and relict. An abstract, including an abstract also 6f the Estate O,{Illtifi Duty records, is enclosed, You will no doubt be much interested in all this (as I was), not least by the reference in the first Codicil to the 2600,000 compensation paid by the U.S:A. and in which H.E. McC,hoped to share. It looks as though he had not received any of it by the time he died as*the Estate Duby records show that his effects were 'Sworn under 93,500'. In the light of the second codicil we do not know.where Henry Eustace was buried. Looks as though it might well be St. John at Hackney, in which parish I think itA s that Clapton, Middx lies. However, his Memorial Inscription, if any , could be informative and I will try to find it. Udell might also be buried in the same grave. I have called up the original of Henry Eustace's Will as I feel sure you would like to have a photo -copy of it. I will order one and let you have it when it comes to hand - this may take about 6 weeks. The4ill and Codicils are quite short and so the copy should not be too expensive. Now, of course, this disposes of two earlier questions: (a) Udall or Udell WEST - She.was evidently Henry Eustace'.s wife and they were married in 1?90. Davie County Public Ubrai0 ... / (b) Mooksvillef NG 2- (b) Extraction of Duplin County Minutes - of April 1786 referring to Henry Eustace as dee d. If correctly. extracted I think this must imply confusion in the original document.between Henry Eustace and his father. As we know, Hiery Eustace was his father's agent in America. (c) Henry Eustace's Will does not mention any children of his. We do not know how old Udell was when he married her. Her Will might resolve this question of whether they had any children. With referenceto para 2 of your letter of 2nd Sept. and the question of the slaves, the extract of the uplin County Court records for January 1790 refers to slaves being divided between Penelope, Catherine and Henry children of James McCULLOH. I agree that our information IA that Henry Eustace, son of James and Elizabeth was not born till 1806, but they had a daughter Henrietta; could your searcher who abstracted the Court records have read an abbreviation of Henrietta as Henry? If so this would bring things back into line. For my part I incline to the view that the James who died in Rowan Countyin 18106 and whom I estimate was born (in America?) about 1?50 is the James referred to in Henry's Will of 1779. Our problem is that that Will does not define what relationship (if any) that James was to him (Henry McCULLOH). I think the answer (if there is one to be found) probably lies in America. Apart from looking for a record of Henry Eustace's burial and possible memorial and for a Will of Udall/Udell McCULLOH 3 will not do anything more at this end until I hear from you. I enclose an accouht to cover the work referred to in this letter and will let you have the photo -copy of Henry Lusatce's Will when I get it. Dear Mrs Eidson, Many thanks for your letters of 11th May, 2nd June, 5th June and for that sending some further MS and typed notes which came on 15th instant. Also for the cheque for $75.00 and for all the various papers and copy documents sent with your letters. I have seen, and called for a photo -copy of, the Will of Henry McCULLOH who died in 1779 and as soon as I get it I will send it on to you. Fortunately the original is readily legible whereas the Register Copy, which is the normal version available from the PRO in Chancery Lane,is in a script which you would probably be unable to e read and would need a transcription. I have studied the papers you sent me and also done a little re- " search. Before enlarging on anpof this I think I should say that it is evident that we have a considerable problem in identity on our ` hands. It does not appear that your James McCULLOH could be Henry McCULLOH's (d.1779) son - evidence from the mamorial inscription at St. Nicholas, Chiswick (where it is true Henry was buried (he is Z y in the Burials Register, as is a Penelope; probably his wife, but not m explicitly so described) - says that James died 9th July 17.9, aged 9. G Should think the year was 1749, which would match with the letter of condolence of 1750; which, incidentally, must have been sent to Henry in England. 1 A May I put some questions? 4 { . (g) Do you know anything about the connections of the 'James McCULLOH of Tennessee' referred to inHarriet's letter? (h) There is some confusion about the William McCULLOCHs referred to in the IREDELL memoires (p.5, penultimate para.) This says: (i) "William had issue James (mow of CaAdey, near Dundalk in Ireland....... who is yet a bachelor" and (ii) "William, a merchant of Dzblin, who is mw a widower. By his wife (whose name was COLEMAN) he had three children - County Public Library 2 daughters and a son - Henry, (late Secretary of this Davin province), two of whose daughters are now living there." mocksoie, NC No mention of James in this instance: these two Williams different peoj)le? In view of the reference to Henry being called the second William's son it looks important to try to establish exactly who is involved. This might well call for some research in Ireland. Can you throw any light on the position? Incidentally, we have another oddity. Henry Eustace McCULLOH whom, one would think (as I did originally) was the son of Henry McCULLOH and Penelope EUSTACE, must have been born quite some time before their marriage in 1749, otherwise he would have been only about 11 years of age when he is said to have been managing his father's affairs in N.C. in 1761: Apart from the fact that I would think it unlikely that .... / he 4 ` 1 .! T -3- unlikely that / he would have completed his legal training fonts and been called to the Bar before he was 21. The Society of the Inner Tample, to whom I wrote, say that they have no record of him there. I will try other lines of enquiry about this. As it appears that the letter of condolence of July 1750 must have been sent to Henry in England can we find out to what address it was directed -- the Colonial Records do not say? I'm afraid there is rather a lot in all this and I shall be most interestdd to hear whether you can help. I should particularly like to see photo -copies of the Wills mentioned if such can be obtained and are not too bulky. I will write again when I have the copy of Henty's Will of 1779.
