Dear Alice,
I found that I was a generation away from some information I tried
to give you yesterday as to the Charlotte McCulloh will and Harrison
Daniel marriage bond. They are:
Will Book 2, page 193 - dated 1895 - Charlotte McCulloch named as
a legatee Lena Leagle (gave her one white counterpane). This
Lena Leagle went by the name McCulloch and married my great
uncle, Charles Lagle. It doesn't say that Lena was a niece
to Charlotte McCulloch. Don't know how I arrived at that
impression. I think I am beginning to fanaticize.
Davie County marriage bonds:
1857 - William Harrison Daniel - Jane Lagle. Jane was a sister
to my great-grandfather, William Lagle. He must have lived
to be a very old man (Harrison Daniel) because my father
remembered seeing him. Daddy said he wore a long, white
beard and lived in a house on William Lagle's farm. For
some reason there were at least three houses on that farm,
and over the years a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law
occupied one or the other of them. Charlie Noble, an elderly
black man, also lived his last years there, too. Think he
had helped William on the farm in his younger years. William
Lagle must have been a kind man to provide for so many needy
relatives; and also didn't evict a man when he could no longer
- work.-- --Charlie- Noble was still living there when my grandfath-
er owned the farm. From remarks my grandmother Lagle made to
Aunt Lena Lagle, I gather she resented having the old black
man on the place. Of course, she was a Howard!!!!!
This Wm. Harrison Daniel may have been a different person
than the Harrison Daniel listed with Wilie Daniel on the
1850 Census of Davie County.
I enjoyed your visit yesterday, and I know Doris did!! Just wanted to
correct a couple of remarks I made. I must be more careful in the
future and have my facts straight.
Hope you find a connection between Jincey and Wilie.
Love,
Davie County Public UbraTY
