The number preceding the civil parish represents the map reference number used in the New Genealogical the of Ireland. 2. The name of the civil parish in alphabetical order within county. i 3. The number following the civil parish represents the reference number used in the county maps accompanying the householders' index to the Griffith's Valuation. '.I 4. Church of Leland Parish. a) If no name is given then the Church of Ireland parish is known by the civil parish name. b) A name is only listed when a Church of Ireland church or parish is known by a name other than the civil parish name. c) The date represents the earliest commencement date of baptism registers, except where stated otherwise. d) If there is no date against the civil parish name, then no pre -1871 Church of Ire- {' land register survives. 5. Roman Catholic Parish. +, a) The name or names of the Roman Catholic parish or parishes serving that civil E parish are given. b) The date represents the earliest baptism or marriage entry in the Catholic register. i c) No date means the Catholic parish couldn't be identified in the National Library list. A register, however, should be held locally. 6. Presbyterian Congregation. a) The name or names of Presbyterian congregations 1pcated within the civil parish are given. i b) The date represents, in almost every case, the earliest baptism register existing for that congregation. c) The names of those congregations that united or were dissolved, and the year in which it occurred, are given in brackets. 7. Other Protestant dissenting congregations. For these denominations the dates of the earliest baptism registers are given when they could be identified. The symbols used are as follows: R.P. — Reformed Presbyterian Congregation S.P. — Secession Presbyterian Congregation Ii M. — Methodist Congregation C. = Congregationalist Congregation u B. = Baptist Congregation r. Q. = Quaker Meeting Unlike the other denominations the presence of a name doesn't mean the i Quaker meeting was still operational by the mid -nineteenth century. It merely means a Quaker meeting was at one time established in this civil parish. xvii pavte CoutY Public Ublary mof,;S'Vwe, NC A GUIDE TO I.R.I.S.H. Kerry. In this age of air travel it is of interest to recall that one of the first men to devote attention to aeronautics was Richard Crosbie (1755-c.1800) who made a successful balloon trip across the city of Dublin in 1785. The first of the MacCrossan family (now spelt Macrossan in the country of their adoption), which has been very prominent in Australia, was John Murtagh Mac- Crossan (1832-1891) who left his native Co. Donegal in 1853. (0) CROTTY The family of 6 Crotaigh is traditionally believed to be a branch of the O'Briens of Thomond which at an unspecified date settled in west Waterford and east Cork, where both in the sixteenth century (as the Fiants testify) and at the present time per- sons of the name Crotty (or O'Crottagh as it was first anglicized) were and are chiefly found. In the seventeenth century Petty's census found them numerous in the baronies of Decies and Coshmore & Coshbride in the western half of Co. Waterford. At that time the prefix O had already been dropped and. it has since seldom been resumed. The two most prominent persons of the name were noteworthy in very different walks of life, for Bartholomew Crotty (d. 1846), appointed rector of the Jesuit College at Lisbon in 1790, was afterwards Bishop of Cloyne and Ross, while William Crotty, who was hanged in 1742, was a famous highwayman. Canon Power in his Short History of County Waterford asserts that the traditional view of him. as a hero is misguided. CULHANE : see p. 47 MacCULLACH, MacCullough COLL While not in the list of the hundred most numerous surnames in Ireland, Mac - C a h, MacCullough and other spelling variants such as MacCullough combined constitute one of our most numerous names, with an estimated population in Ireland of nearly 5,000 persons. As regards location the same conclusion can be drawn from the birth registrations for all the years for which statistics are available, namely that 80 to 90 per cent of the name belong to Ulster, principally Antrim, Down and Tyrone. Petty's census reveals a similar position in 1659, when MacCullough and `d variants was listed as among the principal- Irish names in the baronies of Antrim, 76 Davie County Public Library Mooksville, NC Belfast; Carrickfergus and Toome in Co. Antrim and sower Iveagh in Co. Down. In the previous century the " Annals of Loch Ce " tell us that Seamus Mac Con ' Uladh was killed at Dunbo (near Coleraine) in 1532. This name is translated by the learned editor in his index -as MacCullagh. Treating of Mac Con Uladh (son of the hound of Ulster)Woul gives MacAnully, MacNully, MacAnaul, MacCullow etc. but not MacCuUagh'as a modern or early anglicized fprm. According to him the Irish form of MacCullagh is Mac Colla sometimes Mac Collach derived fro Colla, a personal name in use in MacDonnell and MacSweeney families.oulfe & opinion cannot be accepted here. There is no doubt that the Irish form of MacCullagh i is either Mac Con Uladh or Mac Cu Uladh. The reason for the alternative forms is that in later times Cu Uladh was regarded as one word and so cu did not change in the genitive. From the later form came the pronunciation which gave the ang- licization MacCullagh. Dr. Hayes -McCoy considers that the MacCollas were J galloglass families. The most exhaustive source for sixteenth century Irish surnames is the Fiants therein we find MacAnulla (Belfast); but MacColla, MacCullo(e) and MacCullowe were mainly Connacht, though occasionally Ulster. The " Composition Book of Connacht " (1585) records Rory MacCollo of Becklone, Co. Galway, and Rory MacHugh MacCullogh of Bollindrone, Co. Sligo, as men of substance. As the large scale migration from north-west Ulster to north Connacht did not take place until the next century it would appear that there was an independent sept of MacCullough originating in north Connacht, though it must be observed that there is no mention of such in the Tribes and Customs of Hy Fiachrach or in the " Annals of Connacht," except for the 1532 death recorded in those of Loch Ce and noted above. i x The name MacCulloch is also that of an important Scottish family originally of Ar Ieshire and later of Galloway, whence came the --Ulster Plantation undertaker who was the ancestor of some of the MacCulloghs of Ulster. The first of them settled_ in Co. Donegal. This name is traditionally derived from the Scots Gaelic word culach, a boar, and in this connexion it is interesting to note that in Co. Sligo., within_ living memory, Boar and Bower were in use as synonyms of MacCullagh. The best known people of the name were Ulstermen: James MacCullagh (1809- j 1847), born at Strabane, an eminent mathematician and physicist ; John Edward MacCullough (1837-1885), born at Coleraine, *a leading tragedian in the U.S.A. ; and Joseph Burbridge MacCullagh (1843-1896), born in Dublin,. who has been called the father of the 'interview." In addition to the MacCollas the Fiants have several references to the names O'Collo and O'Colle, located in much the same areas as the MacCollas-; O'Colle appears also as well as Colle in the list of the Earl of Tyrone's kern in 1544. Colle or Coll without a prefix, however, is, at any rate in Munster and Leinster, a different name altogether, being of English or possibly Norman origin : it appears in the Ormond Deeds intermittently from 1360 onwards (occasionally with an O prefix 77 Davie COun - Public lic Library Mooksville, NC -- LLvG-CRSS: /. The first mention I have met of the Co. Limerick 1 family of Coll is at Kilmallock in 1598: they are well known. now on account of their intimate association with President Eamon de Valera* who, it is hardly necessary to mention, was condemned to death for his part in the 1916 Rising, was reprieved on account of being an American citizen, and has since continuously played a leading part in Irish political life. The name Coll is, however, chiefly found in Co. Donegal today and it is probable that there it is an abbreviated form of MacColla. (v.p. 71 supra). In Belfast MacColl has been recorded as used synonymously with MacCaul. (Mac) CUOLAHAN (0) CUOLAHAN, Coolican Cuolahan or Coolahan is a surname about which there has been confusion, not only because it now does duty in English both for Mac Uallachain and 6 Culachain but also because it has been mistaken for MacCoughlan. It is easy to understand how this mistake arose, because the homeland for many centuries of the sept of Mac Uallachain has been the parish of Lusmagh in the barony of Garrycastle, Co. Offaly, and the MacCoughlans occupied the remainder of that barony. Lusmagh borders on that part of Co. Galway known anciently as Sil Anmchadha and the Mac- Cuolahans were sometimes lords thereof, though usually O'Kelly or O'Madden held the dominant position there. As not infrequently happens in the case of Mac names beginning with a vowel, Mac Uallachain, tended to become 6 Cullachain in speech and sometimes to be so written—by so doing O'Dugan in the "Topographical Poem " gave literary currency to this error. In the seventeenth century the Mac- Cooleghans were extensive_ landholders in east Galway, one Brien MacCooleghan being in 1617 seised in fee of Ballymaccoulighan, so called by reason of this family's long* association with the place: At the end of the century they were still in Co. Offaly—thence came Lt. Daniel Cuolaghan of James II's army— and they are there today, though nowhere in large numbers. The O'Cuolahans are of different stock, being of the Hy Fiachrach group and located around Carra, Co. Mayo. Diarmid 0 Culachain (b. 1221), professor of history and scribe of the mass -books of Knock and Aghagower, was the most distinguished member of this Sept. The forms Coolihan and Coolican are modern variants of this ancient name. *De Valera is a toponymic of Spanish origin, formed from the town of Valeria. 78 Davie County Public Library Mocksme, io TSL-' c o o.vc: ot 5 ©sem Gr? B.Pir.J iAd /,Q .9•r 436 VANS-AGNTEW, OF B aRN BARROCH. 8U/GC brother of Sir Wm. V U —,• ' VANS-AGNEW, OF BARN11.11(ito Cil. .117 Iffient. The family of VANS or VAUS claims to be a branch of the great house of VAUX, so celebrated in every part of Europe. (See But -he's Extinct and Dormant Peerage.) In page 1:13 of Sir David Lindsa}y's Heraldry certified by the privy council, V AUS is men- tioned as one of " the surnames of thame that come jiirth of Ingland with Sanet Mar- yaret ;" and in page 17 of the selection of the Harleian Miscellany by Kearsley, print- ed its 1 i93, it is said, 11 Out of these con- fusions its England, Malcolm King of Scot- land did take his opportunity for action. He received into protection many from Eng- land, who either from fear or discontent- ment forsook their country, of whom many families in Scotland are descended, and namely, these, Lindesay, VAus, Ramsay, &c. &c." Lord Hailes, Rapist, Hume, and other authorities, notice the reception of the Anglo -Normans by Malcolm. N1seeT (Ar. Vans of Barnbarroch) says, " The learned antiquary and historian, Sir James Dalrymple, observes that the ancient surname VANS, in Latin Charters called De Vallibus, is the same with the name of VAUX in England, and is one of the first surnames which appear there after the Con- quest. One of the family came to Scotland in the time of King David I. and in the reign of his grandson and successor Malcolm IV. mention is made of Philip de Vallibus who had possessions in the South, and soon after that we find the family of Vallibus or Vans, proprietors of the lands and Barony of Dirletoun in East Lothian." JOHN DE VALLIBUS is a witness to two charters of King MALCOLM IV. the one No. 31 in the Coldingham Chartulary, and the other among the Lundin Charters. In 1174, JOHN DE VALLIBUS was one of the hos- tages to the English, for the ransom of the Scots' King, William. He was s. by his nephew or cousin, JOHN DE VALLIBUS, designed son of Robert of Ellebottl. The son and heir of this John, JOHN DE VALLIBUS, is called John the younger, Dominus de Dirleton, when grant- ing five marks yearly out of his Fair of St. James's in Roxburgshire, as a composition regarding his disputed patronage of Wilton. This John in 1244, is mentioned as one of the lllaynates of Scotland, in the Pope's ra- tification of the peace between England and Scotland. In 1255 he was one of the Hurons who counselled, or rather forced, King ALEXANDER III. to change his ministers. His grandson, JOHN DE VAUX, appears to have been the second husband of Dervurgill,• (the: duo. of Allan, Lord of Galloway, by Murgitrrt. eldest daughter of David, Earl of )iunt- ingdon, third son of King DAVID 1. of Scotland,) the widow of Sir John Bitliol, and mother of JOHN BALIOL, who claimed and obtained the Crown of Scotland. Ile sate in the parliament of Brigham, in 1200, and the next year swore fealty at Berwick to EDWARD I. In 1298 lie defended the: Castle of Dirleton against the famous A n- thony Beke, Bishop of Durham. In 1304 he was a principal party to the agreeutrut between 1'DWARD of England, aid John Comyn, and according to Ryley's Pl:,arta. John Comyn, Edmund Comyn, Jul,,, de Graham, and John de Vaux, settled this agreement at Strathord, the 9th Februarv, 33 EDWARD I. The sincerity of this suii- mission seems to have been more than doubt- ful, for in 1300, mention is made of hint as a friend of ROBERT BRUCE. To this John succeeded THOMAS DE VAUX, who is mentioned by Guthrie, and Brady as being one of the siat - five Earls and Lords who h•d the Scotcl► army at the battle of ilalidon )fill, 19th July, 1333. 1(e Was sluiu in 1:146 tit Net il's Cross, where also his successor, Wil.LIASI VAI'X, wits taken f,rison(tr. OF BAR'S BARROCII. the well known Earl of Bothwell, husband to Queen Mary. In his account of the Dirleton family, Chalmers, (Caledonia, vol. ii. p. 436.) omits several generations, and in vol. iii. page 3116, . talking of Wigtonshire, he makes a curious mistake, for lie considers the Barn- barroch, and the Sheuchan familiis as dis- tinct, whereas they are the same. On the saute page however he justly observes, " the nanie has been changed from Vans to Fans, a change peculiar to this shire," and although he does not dispute the Barnbar- roch branch being descended from a younger son of the Dirleton family, he thinks Alex. Vaux, Bishop of Galloway in 1426, was the first of his name in Wigtonshire. Ni3bet, vol. ii.App. p. 250, says positively, that the Barnbarroch branch are the only remaining heirs male of the Dirleton family, that they descend from a younger son, and although they have no charter older than IVA, yet 11 that the Vanses of this house have subsisted long before that," Nisbet also says, that, •' now since they represent the principal family, by the rules and maxims, that are laid down in Herauldry, they may strike out the mollet, the brotherly differ- ence, and wear and carry the Bend Simple, as they have done for some centuries." Tradition says the same, and that the first Vaux in Wigtonshire married an heiress there; it is said a de Morville. In " 1' Histoire des Malheures de la France sous le Roi Jean," publi6 k Paris cliez Barde, 1611, vol.ii. p. 103, it is stated, talk- ing of the battle of Poictiers, (A.D. 1356.) and of the Scots of note who fell there, "et Andrd Vaus de Gallovay, le frere d'armes du Seigneur Arehimbald.' —Douglas. Barnes, Hollingshed, Abercrombie, and others, men- tion SIR ANDRtw VAvx to Lave been killed at the battle of Poictiers; and this Andrew is believed to have been the younger brother of Willielmus of Dirleton, to have settled in Galloway, and to have been succeeded by another Sir Andrew whose name ap- pears in the settlement of the Scot's Crown, made at Scone, 4th April, 1373, although in Robertson's records the name is erroneously given, Andreas de Valonius. His younger bon was Alexander, Bishop of Galloway from 14.26 to 1451, and he was s. by his eldest, JOAN VANS, who was sent, in 1437, toge- tlier with Alexander Don- de Gordon, Alexander Don- de Montgomery, and Jo- hannis Methven, clericus, as ambassadors from JAMES II, of Scotland, to HENRY VI. of England; and along with these persons concluded a truce the following year.
