Dear Mr. Fenton,
After receiving your letter. of. 9 April., I quickly posted a letter Lo
Mr. Dean Holton, Jr., P. 0. Box
353, Muskegon, Michigan, 49443. I
was about to write you that I had not received
.
an answer, when I
received a certified letter from him at Zephyrhills, Florida, 33590.
My letter must have been forwarded to him there. I am enclosing his
answer as well as the material he sent. He said we were welcome to
use any information which the Surname Archive

could supply as a.result
of their work for him, but he thought the information was negative
for
::
him.

J
He said there were no Holtons or Houltons-on the 1is
Ships Passenger }'
for the period 1760-1795. gn' .s
` ti^•
Our Nathaniel Houlton was already
Pennsylvania 1720. When he said probably not for all the 1700's,
o
I
don't know how he thought that.
The copies he enclosed.are not easy to read. I recognized them,
however, as the
i(D
w
work of Dr. Thomas J. Holton of Charlotte, N. C. Dr.
Holton was not always accurate and was not as thorough as he might
have been. His nephew let me copy his notes (supposedly all of them).
Dr. Holton had visited a family reunion
of our branch of the family
and was allowed to borrow a 200 year old ledger book which had belonged
to Isaac
Holton in Pennsylvania (originally Nathaniel's) and brought
to
North Carolina by Isaac. Dr. Holton never returned the ledger much
to
our sorrow. There are only a .few copies he made of some of the pages,
showing where Nathaniel
made payments on his purchases of land, where
people owed him for stewing, and 1 ist.i.ng his children by Martha. These
_.,
pages dial not mention her children by a previous marriage. It did not
mention whether he had ever been
married before. Dr. Holtoi was
primarily interested in getting into the S, A R, and thought he was
descended from Francis Holton.. He assumed that Francis Houlton was
a brother of Nathaniel
y
and John Houlton merely because a decade or so
later Francis showed up in the same
county in Pennsylvania. I have
never believed he was a brother. Louis A Holton corresponded quite
extensively with Dr. Holton during the 1-920's and early 30's and they
were never able to find a documented connection between the two
families.
A

Lean Holton wrote that he.was descended from Thomas Holton of Trelard.

The book Dean referred to might.be nice to have, but I think he will
be disappointed. It seems to be only a Usting of Holtons in the U. S.
today from telephone directories in various cities. I did not buy one,
but saw a letter "advertising" it.
Dr. Holton assumed a lot. He referred to Nathaniel as an emigrant.
He didn't know that. There were Holtons in Massachusetts and I toyed
with the idea that ours drifted down from there, but the Association
in Massachusetts of Holtons could not find a connection for me (if
they looked thoroughly). I wondered if the Holtons from the Eastern
part of N. C. who were here before Isaac came to N. C. might be ours
that an ancestor went to Pennsylvania and, a,descendant came back --to
N: C. but I could f indhb connection. I"read that a lady from Texas
working on that family thought they came from Ireland to Virginia to
North Carolina. There were family names of Nathaniel and Isaac in
their family too.
Dr. Holton said Francis was a ".:::1wy

Dear Mr. Woodward:
:1 hope that you have the opportunity during Christmas holidays
to find additional you
for my Holton genealogy. It
-.would be greatif you could find the link between the English
and -the American Holtons. If you can find the names of the
....parents of Nathaniel Houlton, I will know if I am going in the
right direction on the English,part..,,I am a very greedy person
when it'c*omes'to information about ancestors. Everything
interests me.Nathaniel's son Isaac married a Margaret P61don'
according to the Chester Count Collections by Bart Anderson.
ha
saw a copy of tt in tTFe aer Room at Guilford College
Ur%
Would surely love to buy a -copy. I have seen several references
in old letters I have found that Isaac came to North Carolina'
from Maryland. I wonder if he really went to Maryland or lived
in.a county of Pennsylvania that had a boundry change and became
Maryland. Is.that possible? I would like to know wherey
Nathaniel and Martha are buried, when he came over, what ship,
his date of birth, exact date of death, when Isaac wkuxxkx went
to Maryland and, when.to North Carolina. He had a grant to land
in North Carolina in
1790. Any of this that you could help me
with would be very much appreciated.
The Turk-s.Head :Shop wrote that a new printing of Futhey and
Cope's History of Chester County would take place during the
,.winter F"o-n-Effs- a-nU*wou1d_.Tro"b=ay be available in the spring
-months of 1976. They said when the new printingbecame
.available they would advise me of the cost, so I assume they will
without my writing them further..
-Thank.you for your. help. Let me know what I owe you.
VerA truly yours,

Dear Mr. Woodward; :
I appreciate so much'the material you have gotten for me in the
past and wonder if you would be able to look further when your
college is out?
I -need very much to learn more about Nathaniel Houlton, as to
his parents, his date of birth, where born, when he came -over
and how many of his brothers came with him. I would like to
know more about,Isaac, when he left Pennsylvania, if he went
to Maryland first and how long he stayed there, ;more about the
lady he married and her ancestors. The Mr. Louis Holton from
Coatesville got a lot -or all of his information other than
that of the Miller.. family from Dr. T-._ J. Holton in ' Charlotte.
Dr. Holton had gotten the ledger book. -belonging originally to
Nathaniel from my ancestors,- direct lineage. He, Dr. Holton,
had gotten some information from England, but.whether there
was any.relationship he'did not know. One line of the English
stopped with a John and Nathaniel Houlton; but there was no
mention of Francis. I -would like proof they_wer_e brothers.: I
would like to know what ship, when they came, et.c.
Mr. Louis A Holton got -'.his information about the. John 'Mille -r.
family -from Futhey and Cope °s History Chester County. I would
love to have a copy of that- book if available I would like.
very much to -have a copy of Bart Anderson°s.Recollections of
Chester County. He said Isaac Houlton, son of Nathaniel and F;
Martha (Miller) Houlton -,'.mar. Margaret.Poldon.at Old Swedes
Church in Wilmington on March 27, 1766 and,Vhen to North Carolina
sometime after that. Isaac was granted land in North.Carolina
in 1779. .Family rumor has it that he lived in Maryland for a
short while..
Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Holton reunion began as a birthday celebration for
Uncle Sam (child of Grandfather Sidney and
8randmother Mary Holton). Sam's birthday was May 20th (same
as Mom's). Gradually the annual date became the third
Sunday in May, which is usually close to the 20th.
Sam's wife, Aunt Maggie's birthday was May l9th, so two
birthdays could be celebrated.
Birthday celebration (later reunion) was held first at
Sam's home, formerly Sidney's homeplace.
Reunion was later held at old Oakdale School (I
remember this as old American Legion building. Photo which
Wann1e has which shows children of the twelve Holton
children was taken in 1957 with Oakdale School as the
backdrop).
Later sites for the Holton reunion included:
Bethany Community Center on Hwy. 21 (north of Statesville)
East Iredell Lions Club (near Rex Beaver's store)
County Line Fire Department (near Cool Springs)
1986 Holton Reunion featured a program reciting
"Thirty -Ninth Holton Reunion" and photograph on the cover of
Sidney and Mary Holton and twelve children. (Nelle has the
negative)
Sidney Green Holton and Mary Wiesner Holton
came to Iredell County area to farm. Sidney fought for the
Union in the Civil War. Sidney had two or three brothers,
who settled in Guilford County. We believe their names were
Emmett, Taul and perhaps one other brother" Mary's father
came from Germany. Mary's mother taught her husband the
English language. He was a Methodist preacher.
Sidney Green Holton (born 8/12/1833; died 8/5/17) and
Mary Wiesner Holton (born 9/07/1838; died 8/5/25) are buried
at Providence Methodist Church in Iredell County near Cool
Springs (P following date of death signifies burial at
Providence). They ha.d twelve (12) children. Sidney was 25
years old when first children were born. Twin sons were the
oldest, based on census data examined by Elbert Holton in
Salt Lake City. 1860 Census showed Sidney and Mary with two
children: Rennie and Cicero. 1870 Census showed them with
11 children.(?)
