Dear Mr. Fenton,
I appreciate so much all the material you sent. It was put together
so well. Just wish it had turned out to be my family.
I have delayed answering your letter, hoping to come up with a
clue for you to trace. So far no luck. Even toyed with the idea
.that maybe family tradition had been wrong and we,like Dean Holton's
ancestor Thomas Holton had come from Ireland. I really don't
believe that. There was an Arthur Holton in Philadelphia. He
died around 1715,naming in his will his wife Elizabeth and only
daughter Mary and sisters, Sarah, Mary and Ann living "near Sarum,
Wiltshire, England. Don't know of any relationship to Nathaniel.
Recently I found a reference to Nathaniel Houlton, as "head of
household" in Salem, Massachusetts in 1668. He would be too old to
be my Nathaniel, but I am trying to check it too to see if he could
be his father.. The Massachusetts Hol tons were here at least. ,-i
hundred years before mine were in Pennsylvania but the Massachusetts
Holtons came from England too.
For the time being hold the balance of the deposit. I have worked
so hard for so long. I can't stand the idea of giving up without
knowing for sure where we came from. If I can found more information
or clues will let you know. I shall keep you posted either way.
Sincerely yours ,

Dear Mrs Eidson,
Thank you for your letter of 23rd March and for the cheque.
I am so sorry to hear about your step -daughter. My wife and
I send our sincere sympathy.
I note what you write about your HO(U)LTONs and I will certainly
see what I can do to find them; but I think I must sound a bit of
warning - the data you give provides very little means of identifying
your Nathaniel, for example, his date of birth is not known and
cannot be deduced from his age at death. This means that his date
of birth could be some time between 10"80( although that would make
him 52 at his marriage in 1732, and if he was still a bachelor
(do we know that?) then it would seem rather unlikely) and 1700
or thereabouts. Without any corroborative evidence we really
havd no means of being able to say that so-and-so was your man.
Certainly I agree that the Nathaniel of 10694 looked a good
candidate for the position. I will see if I can find Mr. Boucher's
history of the HO(U)LTON&.
Yes, the presence of John HOULTON at Nathaniel's marriage
may well help us. I will keep it in mind.
Anyway, it is far too early to be pes.-;imistic. I will get
going on some researches and report - this may take some wo months
before you he..r from me again.
With best wishes,

Dear Mrs Eidson,
My initial researches have ;c-iven me reason to write to you
again much earlier than I expected. I wrote to Mr Francis
Leeson who runs the Surname Archive at Ferring „ Sussex to see if
his Index of references to emigrants from this country to
America would yield a reference to Nathaniel HO(U)LTON, as if so
it might have givenlsome information about Nathaniels birth place
or the place from which he left England. He writes to say that
he only quite recently did some work onjjust this problem for a
Mr. Dean HOLTON, jnr. of PO.'Box 353, Muskegon, Mich. 49443. It
as though Mr HOLTON is interested in -the origin of the same
HO(U)LTONs as you are. Mr HOLTON had some correspondence with

Before I do anything more would you get in touch with Mr HOLTON

Mr. HOLTON for his permission for access to any inforl:iation which

Dear Mr. Holton,
I am in the process of compiling my family history. Mr. W.J.F. Fenton,
Genealogist, of Surry, England has kindly agreed to help me.
He contacted Mr. Francis Leeson who runs the Surname Archive at Ferring,
Sussex and discovered that. in 1977 he had some correspondence with you
and that we were interested in the origin of the same HO(U)LTONS
(mine NATHANIEL HO(U)LTON).
Mr. Fenton wondered if you would be agreeable to sharing your

your permission for access to any informaL.ion which the Surname Archive
could supply us as a result of their work for you (Genealogists
customarily treat such information as confidential).
I am VERY INTERESTED in knowing which son of Nathaniel's was your
ancestor. I have some information on collateral lines, but naturally
t.hev are far from complete (as well as my own line from Isaac ).
Your prompt reply and help will be very much appreciated.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Mr. Fenton,
After receiving your letter of 9 April-, I quickly posted a letter to
Mr. Dean Holton, Jr., P. 0. Box 353, Muskegon, Michigan, 49443. I
was about to write you that I had not received an answer, when I
received a certified letter from him at Zephyrhills, Florida, 335911.
My letter must have been forwarded to him there. I am enclosing hi..s
answer as well as the material he sent. He said we were welcome to
use any information which the Surname Archive could supply as a result
of their work for him, but he thought the information was negative
for him.
He said there were no Holtons or Houltons-on the Ships Passenger lis! --s
for the period 1760-1795. Our Nathaniel Houlton was already in
Pennsylvania 1720. When he said probably not for all the 1700's, I
don't know how he thought that.
The copies he enclosed are not easy to read. I recognized them,
however, as the work of Dr. Thomas J. Holton of Charlotte, N. C, Dr.

a brother of Nathaniel and John Houlton merely because a decade or so
later Francis showed up in the same county in Pennsylvania. I have
never believed he was a brother. Louis A. Holton corresponded quite
extensively with Dr. Holton durin t e 11920's and early 3 s and they
were never a e to in a ocumente connec ion etween t e two

Dean Holton wrote that he was descended from Thomas Holton of Irelard.

9 The book Dean referred to might be nice to have, but I think he will
be disappointed. It seems to be only a listing of Holtons in the U.
today from telephone directories in various cities. I did not b S.
but saw a letter "advertising" it. uy one,
Dr. Holton assumed a lot. He referred to Nathaniel as an emigrant.
He didn't know that. There were Holtons in Massae usetts andgI toyed
wi the ilei t at ours drifted down from there, but the Associationd
in Massachusetts of Holtons could not find a connection for me if
they looked thoroughly). I wondered if the Holtons from the Easte
part of N. C. who were here before Isaac came to N. rn
that an ancestor went to Pennsylvania and a descendant cametbac ours
N. C. but I could find no connection, k to
working on that family thought they came from Irelanda lady from Texas
North Carolina. There were family names of Nathanieand to
Virginia to
their family too. Isaac in
Dr. Holton said Francis was a "ravyer" by trade. I could not find
where it said that.
I am enclosing copies of the Wiltshire Notes and Queries about: the
Houlton family. There were a lot of Nathaniels and Johns. Sorry
that the copies are not plainer, but they'are copies of copie.
I hope you can make sense of all this material.

Dear Alice,
It was good to see you Saturday. Daddy and I enjoyed your visit
and it was nice to have someone to talk genealogy with. Seems that
nobody in my family is interested.
This is probably a waste of your time because I am sure you have
this information; but if you are like me, you are grasping -at -straws
and would like to get any information you can. I was looking thru
my book NAMES OF PERSONS FOR WHOM MARRIAGE LICENSES WERE ISSUED IN

Genealogical Publishing Co. and I noticed a Nathaniel Holton listed.
This is, I'm sure, the man you mentioned who married the widow with
a number of children. I am sending it anyway so you may see if it
is the one you have:

All of this may be outdated, but I decided to send it anyway.
elope it isn't too confusing. You probably havethe Draughon &
Johnson book, anyway.
Had a card from Mrs. Hopkins today. She is working hard but
making slow progress. She doesn t think her revised edition willbe
published until after Christmas.- She recently wrote 1400 letters
and has had a tremendous response. I'll bet she is having a lot of
fun correlating all that material. That really is the only way to
gain family history. Write a lot of people and hope that .most will
respond. If you are lucky, you will gain a little bit that will help.
Better stop and think about some supper. Come when you can.
Incidentally, Doris, Arnold, Gary and family came to see us Sunday
night. Gary and Cynthia are expecting a baby in March so Doris will
be -!having two little grandchildren instead of one. Both Kathi and
Cynthia are trying to have a little girl so 1 hope one or both succeed
this time.

Dear Mr. Fenton,
Please excuse my not answering your letter of February 21 sooner.
In the future I promise to be prompt. My step -daughter died
suddenly of a heart attack the first of Maref and I put aside my
genealogical records and work for a period. She was far too
young to die of a heart attack and -I was quite upset about the
whole thing.
I am happy that you are going to undertake finding my ancestors.
My initial check for $75.00 is enclosed.
I will enclose what I know about Nathaniel Houlton. Family
tradition has always been that we came from England but on my own
I have not been able t-. come up with a clue as to where. For
ages I worked on the, assumption that he came from the Wiltshire
Houltons (Holtons). Their families had a lot of Nathaniels and
a lot of Johns but I couldn't get them to fit,,hence no attempt
at documentation. I read Mr. Boucher's history of the Houltons
carried in the Wiltshire Notes and Queries which a friend obtained
for me from our National Archives, but I couldn't get them to
match. I was so excited when I found christening at All Hallows
The Great on Bread Street. The dates seemed to fit. Alas, when
I read further they turned out to be the Houltons in Wiltshire.
(A Houlton in Wiltshire left money to that church and.when I
checked the dates of birth on their pedigree sheet, they were the
same - so I was back where I started from.
At Nathaniel Houlton's marriage to Martha Miller Jordan, John
Houlton attended - though he was not a Quaker. I believe he was
Nathaniel's brother. Three Houltons lived in Chester County,
Pennsylvania at one time but I don't think the other - Francis
Holton - was a brother.
I shall look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, '
Davie Counter Public Ubrary
Mocksville, NC
.Martha Miller Jordan was daughter of John and Mary (Ignew) Miller from
' Ireland. Martha was born in Ireland. John seems to have arrived in Pa.
Pennsylvania c 1709. Quaker records said children born near Charlemont,
County Armagh, Ireland. Martha Miller married 1719 John Jordan and had
six children. John Jordan died c 1730 and the widow Jordan married
Nathaniel Houlton (The only reference I found of him in Quaker records was
their marriage. I believe he was Quaker by marriage only. Her family were
prominent Quakers, giving land for Meeting House and burial grounds, etc.
