Thank you so much for your letter of January 11 about the Daniel family. In thecourse of my research regarding the Daniel family, I have found that James Daniel married Rebecca Travers Adderton, a widow, on 5 April 1779. They subsequently had 9 children. This James Daniel is our g.g.g.grand- father and Revolutionary War -hero. One of the nine children of'James and Rebecca was James W. Daniel who married Nancy Henly on 6 July 1814. Abraham Redwine, who was the bondsman,. was also the brother-in-law of James W. Daniel. Abraham Redwine had married Mary (Polly) Daniel,' sister of James W. Daniel, on 18 June 1811. Our JAMES'Daniel was born about 1755 in Northunberiand County, Va. Ts it possible that our JaMeS7 could have -been a brother of your forbear Josiah Daniel Sr..? According to Hayden's book on the Daniel's there was a Josiah Daniel born of James Daniel of Goochland county, Va. and Elizabeth ?oodson.daughter'of Benjamin and Sarah (Porter) Woodson. This Mr. - Daniel was sberif of Goochland - in 1742 and Albermarle in -1754. Thank you for forwarding my letter to your friend in Winston-Salem. You might tell your friend in Winston-Salem that a Nancy Redwine Nelson who lives in Tampa has written a book on the Redwine Is. Perhaps she would be interested. Mrs. Nelson may be contacted at 11617 Carrollwood Drive, Tampa, F1. 33618. The cost of the book was $30.001 which included shipping. Sincerely, (Miss) A e eg9y) J. I know notring about land grants, deeds, etc. and I don't understand what he is telling me. It seems that some documents which were called grants were in fact deeds. Some land was granted twice and off' course, some land was confiscated aL the end of the Revolution. Do you know if this 100 acres was also registered in Salisbury? 'when you arenext in Mocksville, please talk with Anarew ab:;ut it because you would know what ne was talking abouL - I don't. I have received the three books I ordered from Airs. DEED ABSTRACTS VOL. 2 1762-1772. I would love to have had a copy of Vol. 1 of the Wills of Rowan County; but, unfortunately, it is out -of -print. Mrs. Linn copied the Thomas willslistea in Vol. 1 ana sent me the information contcinea in triem. She must be a very fine person. Have you ever met her? If there is anything in these books you would be interestea in, I would be glad to copy and send it to you. If you line, you may borrow them next time you are in Mocksville. I_cnecked,one of the deeds to James McCulloh in July of 1759 and it states that he was a•saddler. I love to read these old records and ae,-cs because some of them contained some interesting and entertaining information. Alice, is your branen of tr_e McCulloh family descended from Henry Eustace McCulloh? I have wondered if you might be since one of your ra atives was namea after him. I am about to become as interesteu in the c ulloh's as you are 6e visited Doris & Arnola today but didn't stay too long because T am about sick with sinus or hay -fever or s orretning . Are you familiar with a Freeman who is related to the Daniel family? This deed I referred to is very interesting. P. S. Ney was the subscribing witness. The deed was dated June 12, 1835 but was not registered until January 4, 1886. A B. Bailey (guess this was Braxton Baily) had to personally appear and duly swore that he knew the handwriting of P.S. Ney. When this was done the instrument was certified to be registered. The deea that followed this one was made by Daniel Foster and wife Mary. It mentioned that she was alsio a s-i'ster of Josiah, Jr. Can't imagine why it took so long to have -Lhem-recorded - it was over 50 years later. People are so good to share their research. Mrs. Zelda Cline gave me information several years ago waich na:iued the parents of my great-grandmother, Matilda Michael Lagle . Her parents were George ana Catherine Wagner Michael. We' had tried for years to find t._is information, and Mrs. Cline had a copy of a court case from Alabama which listed the descendants of Nicholas ,Michael, 'and one of them was George. Since George was long gone by this time, its listed nis children and grandchildren. There was Granddaddy Lagle anahis brothers and sister. Thank you so much for your letter of January 11 about the Daniel family. In thecourse of my research regarding the Daniel family, I have found that James Daniel married Rebecca Travers Adderton, a widow, on 5 April 1779. They subsequently had 9 children. This James Daniel is our g.g.g.grand- father and Revolutionary War hero. one of the nine children of James and Rebecca was James W. Daniel who married Nancy Henly on 6 July 1814. Abraham Redwine, who was the bondsman, was also the brother-in-law of James W. Daniel. Abraham Redwine had married Mary (Polly) Daniel, sister of James W. Daniel, on 18 June 1811. Our JaMES Daniel was born about 1755 in Northunberland County, Va. Is it possible that our James- could have been a brother of your forbear Josiah Daniel Sr.? According to Hayden's book on the Daniel's there was a Josiah Daniel born of James Daniel of Goochland county, Va. and Elizabeth Woodson daughter of Benjamin and Sarah (Porter) Woodson. This Mr. Daniel was sherif of Gooehland in 1742 and Albermarle in 1754. Thank you for forwarding my letter to your friend in Winston-Salem. You might tell your friend in Winston-Salem that a Nancy Redwine Nelson who lives in Tampa has written a book on the Redwine's. Perhaps she would be interested. Mrs. Nelson may be contacted at 11617 Carrollwood Drive, Tampa, F1. 33618. The cost of the book was $30.00, which included shipping. Sincerely, (Miss )Mar", a leggy) J. Incidentally, I appreciate your copying the George Lagle deed for me - thanks. That Josiah was father of your Pallston "Polly" Daniel, wife of George Lagle. Those Daniel tombstones refer to your Josiah and to his son, Josiah Jr. There were many Daniels on records of Rowan Co., but only ONE Josiah and Josiah Jr., so they must be yours, with no question. I looked up Josiah Daniel Jr. on 1880 Census of Davie Co., and the record showed that the parents of both he and his wife Hannah were born in VIRGINI ' T#ere were at LEAST 78 Daniels who died in Va. between 1623 C -1 -NO -O! 28 of the 78 died in Middlesex Co., Va., alone, including a Josiah who left an inventory in 1747. No persons named Daniel on 1778 Tax List of Rowan Co., but there was one list in German which was not included. Josiah Daniel appeared on 1790 Census of Rowan Co., with 1 male over 16, including head of family; 2 males under 16; and 4 females. Josiah was born c1756, and his wife c1765, so from size of their family in 1790, I'd say they married in or near the year 1780. I find no marriage bond for them. The 1800 C@nsus of Rowan Co. listed three Daniel families all together, on same page, and I think it probable that they are all close kin to Josiah. Page 424 - Josiah Daniel - 2 males & 2 females aged under 10; 1 female 10 to 16; 1 male & 1 female 16 to 26; 1 male & 1 female 26 to 45. listed right after Josiah was a John Daniel, 1 male & 1 female under 10; 1 male & 1 female 26 to 45. Then on same page, James Daniel, 1 male 26-45. (John Lagle was in same district, but two pages further on, with 2 males & 1 female under 10; 1 male & 1 female 26 to 45.) 12 Daniel families on 1810 Census of Rowan, including Josiah, with 1 male Publications: JOURNAL OF NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGY; INDEX TO NORTH CAROLINA WILLS, 1663-1900; 1815 TAX LIST OF RANDOLPH COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA; HIATT-HIETT GENEALOGY (1951); Co -Editor: NORTH CAROLINA GENEALOGICAL REFERENCE (Second Edition). Josiah left no will, or division of estate. A check of all Michael & Walser wills and deeds in Davidson Co. fconstitute to yield any clue as to your Matilda. Looks as if her problem will a separate research project! Josiah died while Davie was still Rowan Co.. He left no will. Rowan 'Co. Estate Papers, here in the Archives, include a folder for Josiah Daniel. A year's allowance was given to his widow & family on June 1830. JosTiva Srinegar was administrator of the estate. Final settlement was 10 Oct. 1832. — Josiah and his wife neither one are named in any Rowan Co. wills, so we shall need to look further for maiden name of Priscilla# and parents of Josiah. Josiah may have come to N. C. with his parents, or he -may have married in Va. and come to N. C. with his wife and perhaps some children. As to Matilda, wife of Wm Lagle, m. 1851 in Davidson Co., I have been trying to prove whether she was a Michael or a Walser. Your family records say Michael and the marriage bond gave Walser. I made a search of 1850 Census of both Davidson and Davie 'Cots for all persons named Matilda, especially Walser & Michael. Only the foolowing was found: 1850 Census, Davidson Co., N. C.: p. 250 — E. Michael aged 23, MATILDA MICHAEL 20, Addeline Michael 18, -- -Caroline- Michael 14 and John R. Michael 11/12. Setreral Michaels left wills before 1850, and one of them probably left the above daughters. I'll check further into it. Hiram Walser was the bondsman on the 1851 marriage bond (did not locate Hiram on 1850 Census). Possibly he* was Matilda'. guardian or had taken the girls under his wing. Anyway, the clerk must have gotten the idea that Matilda was a Walser rather than a Michael so put Walser on the marriage bond. I think Michael will prove to be correct. I'll plan to send you another report in a few weeks. Sincerely, L William Pe'ry Johnson Davie County Public Watt' .Mocksville, NIG Fj Z 0 to L 4 bavi County Public Libra, - Mdo4sville, NZ
