Eidson 1135 Kenwood Street Winston Salem, North Carolina 27103 Re: Katharine McCulloh Dear Mrs. Eidson: I today received a copy of some information you submitted to the Clan McCulloh Newsletter concerning James McCulloh and his wife Elizabeth and their children who resided in North Carolina in the late 1700's and early 1800's. I am particularily interested in Katharine McCulloh who you indicate married a Barefield. I recently obtained information indicating that Lewis Barfield, who was my great great great grandfather, married Katharine McCulloh January 8, 1791 in Duplin North Carolina. I believe her to be the same Katharine McCulloh shown on your chart and am writing to ask for any information you can give me concerning her family. I am particularily interested Katharine's relation, if any, with Henry McCulloh who was instrumental in the settleing of Scotch Irish immigrants in and around Duplin County and his son Henry Eustace McCulloh who was a British office holder in 1765 and whose lands were confisicated following the revolutionary war. Additionally, if you know of any British royal connections or titles of the McCulloh family predating them I would be inter- ested. Family rumor has it that my great grandfather, John Fletcher Barfield, was offered a family estate and title in England in the late 1800's if he would return. If by chance you Barfields or Barefields, Ve7rt yss ,, i'%`"" vim. J. Fletcher Freeman Justice of the Peace have any information concerning the I would also love to receive it. Eidson 1135 Kenwood Street Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103 Dear Mrs. Eidson, Thank you so very much for your letter of January 16. I sympa- thize with you over the illness of your family member and under- stand how time consuming that can be. I greatly appreciate the information you included in your letter concerning the dates of death for Catharine McCulloh and Lewis Barfield, since I did not have that information. I am enclosing for you a copy of the in- formation I have accumulated on the Barfields. Lewis and Catharine had a son, Henry, who, following their death, migrated to Smith County and then Van Zandt County, Texas. One of Henry's sons was John Fletcher Barfield who had only one surviv- ing child - my Grandmother, Wilton Barfield Freeman. After you have had a chance to read my memorandum and at your convenience, since I know you are going to be very busy for quite some time, I would appreciate it if you would send me any comments or in- formation you might have. I would particularly be interested in the other children of Lewis and Catharine, since I know of only one named John, and I am quite interested to know if possibly he was a John Fletcher. Additionally, I would like to obtain copies of any documents you might have such as death certifi- cates, obituaries, census, etc. I, of course, will be more than willing to pay you for any such copies. v 1 s . pC A C J. Since I have been unable to obtain any information from any sources in Dallas regarding the predecessors of James McCulloh, father of Katharine McCulloh Barfield, I would be interested in acquiring a copy of your book when it is available, if, in fact, it covers this lineage. At your convenience, please advise me if this lineage is covered and when your book might be available. Some of the comments are added below the information. I feel pretty certain that Sarah Barfield who married Thornton Vaught is the daughter of Lewis and Catharine Barfield. The date of marriage would fit, location and the fact that they lived next to Lewis in the 1830 census. About the time that I feel the Pike Co. vs. Perry Co. 1830 location for Alfred and Lewis.is straightened out, something comes up that raises another question. Now I wonder whether they could have lived in both and been counted on both censuses. I failed to get the dates that each was taken, if a date is shown, and I definitely did find them in Pike Co. listing last week, and my file seems to indicate that I also found them in Perry Co. census. On the next visit I will try to get it straightened out, and try to find dates. There are so many variations of spelling for Barfield, and so many given names and ages that are identical that it is hard to keep them straight. As commented on the enclosures, I wonder whether the young male, young female and the female aged 30/40 could be Rebecca Barfield, widow of James who died 1822 in Alabama, and two of their children. Rebecca married Richard Garner in 1824 and I have not been able to locate them since that date. A D. L. (David Lewis?) Barfield witnessed a deed for John P.W. Barfield in Perry Co. 1839 and he possibly is the son of James and Rebecca Barfield. I believe I have already tried to find more about the Garners in Alabama Records but found nothing past their marriage, such as death notice, will, etc. Have you heard any more from the Texas Barfields? And do you plan to carry them as far as possible in your book? I have family charts made up on the children of Lewis and Catharine McC Barfield and am gradually adding to them as the information is found. I haven't finished with the 1900 Texas soundex and need to compile a list of those to be checked. I read through 1860 Smith Co. Texas for Barfields but did not find the ones stated to have been there, such as Henry, Sr. and his family. They went to Texas after the 1850 census taken in Miss. and should have been in Smith Co. in 1860 if the information Barfield gave you is correct. I don't know whether there is an 1860 index for Texas; our library does not have one, nor does it have the 1910 soundex. The reels cost in the thou$ands and the library is looking for a patron to buy the 1910 soundex for them. So far, I need to locate ALFRED in 1840, MARY JOHN P.W. in 1840, SARAH BARFIELD VAUGHT 1840 died in 1822 to be proved as son ax of Lewis, from date of birth. Will keep you posted. These ages do not fit in with Lewis and Catharine. Wonder if this could be the widow of James, Rebecca Barfield -Garner, daughter Sally Jenkins and either John Henry or David Lewis Barfield? Rebecca Barfield married Richard Garner in 1824 and I have not been able to locate them past that date. Possibly he died prior to the 1830 census and widow and 2 of the children lived with Lewis and Catharine for a while. I also think the young child in the 1840 census is one of the sons of James. I have not proved that this James was the son of Lewis but evidence points that way. What do you think?) VAUGHT, Thornton males: 1 - 20/30 fem. 2 - (-) 5 1 - 20/30 There were 2 families between Alfred and Lewis, and Vaught was listed directly below Lewis which leads me to believe that Sarah Barfield who married Thornton Vaught was the daughter of Lewis.
