WOOD 1604 Southwood Baytown, Texas 77520 Dear Mrs Wood: The entries in the Index of North Carolina Ancestors were my attempt to correctly and completely list t e members of the Boone Family who lived "in the Forks of the Yadkin" then Rowan now Davie County, North Carolina. Note that the entry for Mark and Catherine (Boone) Whitaker lists the date of the Marriage Bond. he* actual marriage may have taken place days later. In those days the gr m and a friend or member of the family would ride on horseback ( or walk'. the 20 miles to Salisbury, North Carolina and obtain a marriage bond. The journey and the "official business" might take an entire day. The trip home might take the better part of the next day, and the actual wedding might not take place until both families and all friends.had been assembled. I believe that Patsy Whitaker was a granddaughter of Mark and Katie, and she was married to a McLemore; the only mention I have seen of Patsy led me believe that at the time she was in the area of Mulberry(Forks) in Lincoln County, Tennessee, she was already a widow - an assumption that may be totally false - but there is no mention of her husband (or children). Enclosed is all the material in the Davie County Public Library History and Genealogy Room on Mark Whitaker; the information on the children of Mark and Katie was provided by Michael E Collier, whose research is ongoing. Contact him for further information. He is working on contract in another state, so he takes a long time to get his mail and a long time to answer his letters. Also enclosed is C. Bruce Whi to ker's genealogy which traces the Whitakers back to those born in England. College, ana a member of the South Carolina Genealogical Society, Greenville Chapter. For the past two years, I have been doing a family tree research on my family - ana a little for a long time. I have been in touch with Mr. Ray Tucker and he speaks highly of you. It is my belief that the doones and the Baileys were frienas ana Neighbors in early settlements in North Carolina. What I would like to do is to see if we can help each other. The earliest Baileys that I have recoras on wen firmly establishea and living in a house that still stands in Kinsale, Va, in 1667. This was Steven Bailey, married Ann Walker, and had children John and William, ana daughters inn (m. Smith) andMary (m. Smith) Steven died 8 Dec., 1 697 and John inherited. I have 4 more generations in Kinsale (Westmoreland County). It is believed that the baileys immigrated into the country thru Jamestown. As the Baileys spread out looking for more land, one went to Greenurier Co., West Va., (then Va.) Others went to Penn. I have picked up the trail in Chester Co., Penn., where Andrew, David, and William were living in 1737. All three came into North Carolina between 1757-1761, ana settlea on the banks of the Yadkin River. I understand that Daniel Boone, your ancestor built the first settlement. Daniel Bailey, born c 1760 in Wilkes County (now Rowan) was the son of one of the above. He volunteered for the patriots on 1 July, 17'19, and fought for three years in the Revolutionary War. Among other places he was at Cowpens, ana was hit by a ball in the right leg. He was discharged as a Captain, ana given 250 acres of land on Mush Creep in Greenville County (S. C.). Here he raised a large family, of whom I am a descendant. I have a very good history of all since then. I would very much like to have more info on the Settlement on the Yadkin River. Of course I am more p:,rticularly interested in the Baileys, but oeing a student of history anything would be welcome. Donnelly, Treasurer of The American TAilitary Institute, PO Box 1653, Charlotte, North Carolina: John Wilson, A linen weaver of Belfast, Ireland, and was born in 1698. He had three sons: John, James Samuel, and Will- iam. Uliliiam Nilson left Ireland and came to Rowan Co., N.C. There, he became a farmer, and owned land on the Yadkin River. He enlisted and served through the American Revolution, fighting in the Battle of Cow Pens, the Rattle of King's "Muntain and in otrier active engagements until the end of the war, when he was mustered out as a Captain. In 1779, he married Nancy .Ann Trott, and to them 8 children were born; James, John, Henry, Samuel, William Jr., (who was to become our mutual Great -Grandfather), David Stuart, Jane Margaret and Eleanor. All these children attained ages above seventy years. in 1814 this family moved to Rutherford Co., Tenn. from ` .C. William Wilson died soon after this in 18149 im Ruther- ford Co. 111,is son, Wm. 'Filson, Jr., engaged in farming first in Rutherford Co., mntil 1855, when he came to Dade Co., then on to Greene Co. , ?lo. and acquired what we call the told 'Milson Farm. on Highway 13, north of Springfield. NANCY SLUDER, Rowan Co., m.b. dated: 01, Jul 1769, both listed in age range of 60-70 in 1840 Davidson Co., NC Census. I believe the older Boyd was connected to"my" John, poss., a bro., his home place bordered with John Sr.,'s land. I also wonder if the Boyd and Isaac Wilson listed on the 1812 Giles Co., TN., Tax List and the 1820 Census of the same co., & state may have been the sons of my John and Sarah WILSON? Isaac & Boyd both appear to have vanished from the Rowan Co.,NC., area by 1810 or before? Tradition states that Isaac left his family and started a new one in the new Ohio territory, he sold his inherited land to Boyd (his bro) in Aug of 1801, before the land was surveyed and divided in 1806. Boyd (Jr) sold Isaac's portion to Hiram (another bro) in 1808, & his own portion to Valentine DAY, in 1809, after. which he doesn't appear on any records in Rowan, NC. The descendants of the Boyd who settled in Giles Co., TN., ca. 1809, gives the name of their Boyd's wife as Margaret FREEDLE, m. ca. 1799? There was a family of Freedles living in the same area as our Wilsons in Rowan Co. and a Casper FRIDDLE even earlier, in Montgomery Co., NC., living close to Isaac and Gabrill DAVIS, in 1784-87, (State Census). Casper FREEDLE was in Rowan by 1790. Hugh McCrary's Land Div., in 1806, shows a John FRIDEL that (spelled Freedle in 1830) inherited Lot #4 (56 3/4 acres) this land cornered with Hugh SILVERS Lot # 3 and SILVER'S cornered with Joseph DAVIS' inherited Lot # 2. (Some kind of a tie between the McCrary family and Freedles?) This was the same McCRARY family that Isaac Wilson Sr., married into and may have ran away from??? (Trad., also states that either Isaac or Boyd was killed with a felled tree ... at Sutherlands, in Ashe Co., NC). That her father died seized and possessed of a considerable Real and Personal Estate in this county and much indebted. That JAMES WISEMAN, administrator of his estate, sold -off the personal estate and has been unable to pay off all the creditors and that there yet remains some creditors to whom are due a bal- ance of about $800 that her father died siezed of some 400-400 acres of land and among other land, a mill tract of about 120 acres, that from the indebt- edness of her father's estate it is ascertained some portion of said Real Estate will have to be sold and the mill now being in good repair it is believed by her friends that a sale of the mill and land tract of about 120 acres would be of benefit to the interest of the estate, thus descended to her ---excepting about 3 acres which is cut off by a road that should be left as it joins the home tract ---- and a sale of the home tract of 2 or 3 acres would be of advantage as that is cut-off by the mill race and is adjoining the mill tract. I am enclosing the WILSON part of my pedigree chart with some of the things I know about my SAMUEL WILSON family just in case you ever run into anything that might help me. I know my Samuel was married in Lincoln Co. NC to Jane Glenn, and he may have been born there - at least his census records show he was born in NC in 1782. I now think he may descend from James Wilson (d. Lincoln Co. 1789) and Eleanor Wilson (will dated Nov. 1809 in Lincoln Co. NC) . I am enclosing some letters I received from a Mrs. Robt. Since it has been a few years since last we corresponded, I imagine that you may not recall? I had written to the Library there in Mocksville, asking to be sent a copy of the booklet compiled on the families of Boones in the area of Hunting Creek, NC., that was compiled by Mr. Wall, Ms. Martin and yourself. You were kind enough to reply to my inquires, and you ask if I would send in my own connection to this line. I replied that I was in the process of re- affirming the documentation established on these Boones and Wilsons in the past, and was coming up with too many inconsistencies, and would prefer to wait until I could find more records or something that would confirm or deny the previous researcher's documentry records, who said she knew our ancestor (in common), Mrs Mary WILSON -HEATH, had a brother named BOYD. As you said you read the 1986 November issue of Rowan Co., Register, you can easily see who Boyd and Mary belonged to and just how easy these two families could be and were confused. (I do think John Jr., & my John may have been related?) I still do not know what our Sarah's maiden name was, but do know that she wasn't the daughter of John & Rebecca Bryan -Boone. Even though the D.A.R., still has this mistake listed, the distant relative who was also a C.G., and that did this documentation is now retired, (b. 1899) the last I heard from her, she assured me that "our" Sarah was his' daughter, but John Boone's,* (5th G., [b.17271) wife, Rebecca Bryan "was not for us" (was how she put it) that there were many John Boones, & I had "ours" mixed-up? She also told me she could help me no further. I decided to let her be and try to get this straightened out with the D.A.R. later on, she was so adament, that I didn't have the heart to upset her belief in her family tree." Now as to Andrew, I'm sorry but I don't think I can be of help to you, as it sounds as if you've been very thorough, if you can rule out the NC area, for Andrew in 1830 and agree with you that he wasn't there or not listed? But come to think of it, I don't have him on any census in Rowan or Davidson either? But from deeds found in MuCubbins papers, with Samuel and John and either A. or Andrew Wilson, I had assumed these were the brothers? You may have these same records? (Enclosed) They show the A./Andrew was there only through November of 1820. Andrew being one of the administrators of his father's estate as was Thomas Smiths both went to court to try to get money from one of LONGHORN TABB's sons, VINCENT TABB, it was to do with a slave boy named Daniel, L. TABB had purchased the boy from John Wilson (Jr.,) and Vincent Tabb had been his father's Security, ("against his better judgement") Thomas Smith and Andrew had attached a lien on Vincent's home. Vincent told the court that his father had paid the remainder of the note on the slave, but John, (Jr.,d. c1811) didn't have the note with him to destroy at the time and told L. Tabb that he would, but evidently never did? (These papers dated 1812) Davie Counbi Public Library Von villet NC -2 - Vincent Tabb then told the court that his father, Longhorn had returned the slave to said John, for some reason, (Vincent couldn't remember what) just before his father moved back to VA., but no record was available to show this either? (There was no paper in the file to show the outcome of this situation?) I have a census index of some of the middle counties of TN., for the year of 9830 & had thought the ANDREW WILSON on the 1830 LINCOLN CO., TN., on page UA, was John Jr., & Sarah (Boone) Wilson's eldest son? As others from the Rowan/Davidson Cos., area of NC., were also listed, as was: John Wilson JR., Samuel Wilson, James, James Jr., Mathew, Alfred, Boone and Andrew, and Jas. Leatherman in between the last two, even Lemuel BROADWAY was living nearby, it looked as if they'd all finally arrived? For some reason I didn't list the data on these Wilsons, when I read this film, but do remember thinking that the ages fit the correct age ranges, Andrew's especially. Guess I was wrong, huh? And though I don't see him on the 1830 of Giles Co., TN., I did find a BOYD and ISAAC Wilson living there as early as 1892, by 9820 sev., more Wilsons, plus S. Abbott, Andrew Slater, Isaac, Aaron & David Wilcoxsen, Seaborn, John & Joshua Tacker, William McCreery,Valentine Huff, Daniel Leatherman & so on. Or at least you are assuming he did until you find something to say otherwise? Have you searched CASWELL County, NC., for Andrew? (See court suit between Josiah Morton & Warren Roberts, just -a thought?) . By the way as the file I received had so many papers intermingled, I think its possible that there are several documents that belong to each of these families, filed in another Wilson file? (I can think of 1 paper I would have expected to have been included with what I received, ....... the dower land that my Sarah petitioned for and .......there seemed to be vouchers or some of the Mecklenburg papers missing, and I wondered why they were in this file? WILSON 426 Windsor Drive Salisbury,NC 28144 I am a direct descendant of John Boone5 (1727-1803) of Hunting Creek, in present-day Davie County, North Carolina. For years I have been assembling data towards a complete listing of his children. I have reviewed many sources of information including the 1962 book by Wright W. Frost, which identifies Sarah Boone6 as the fifth child of John and Rebecca Boone. (See Incl #1) It is stated that she married "John Wilson, brother of the Mary Wilson who married Reverend Benjamin Boone". Next is the statement: "they settled in Lincoln County, Tennessee". There is no record of John and Sarah (Boone) Wilson in Lincoln County, Tennessee. So recently I revised my listing of the Children of John and Rebecca Boone. (See Incl #2) Note I find no record of John and Sarah (Boone) Wilson any- where but in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina. In August 1815 Sarah (Boone) Wilson's mother prepared her will (see Incl #3) wherein it is established that by the date of her will, her son-in-law John Wilson is dead, and her daughter Sarah (Boone) Wilson is a widow. In Rowan County Will Book D, page 242 the will of John Boone SR identifies his son John Wilson as executor. Will was dated 10 May 1800 (See Incl #4) But in Loose Papers in the North Carolina Archives in Raleigh, there are Guardian Bonds for the heirs of John Wilson JR issued in 1801. His son Andrew is identified (not to mention son Boone Wilson). Andrew is also identified as a "trusty grandson" in the will of Rebecca Boone (Inc] #3) 1 assume (very risky business!) that John Wilson SR b JR died - both of them before the end of 1801. This makes Sarah (Boone) Wilson a widow as early as 1801. a SARAH WILSON is listed as head of household in the 1810 US Census(Rowan 246) o with: Males: under 10: 0, 10-15: 1, 15-25: 1, 26-44: 0, 45 plus: 0. But the Squire Boone (1696-1765) Family NEVER "lived" here there is no nearby spring, with "safe" water for the humans. There is no "safe" pasture for the cows and sheep, and horses; there is no place to put in a crop of corn or wheat. (2) Sarah (Morgan) Boone - a fastidious Quaker would never have "set up house" in any such dingy hole in the ground! Even then folks knew that such a place was "unhealthy". At the moment, I'm searching out "correct" & complete information on Mary Wilson (1765-1823) and her Wilson Family. So far the name of her mother is simply Rebecca - with no suggestion of a family name. I have not (as yet) researched the Wilson family, other than to note that John Wilson was a member of the North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution, as was his son- in-law, Benjamin Boone, who took his family to Kentucky in 1809 and to Lincoln County, Tennessee in 1811. On ancestors of the BOONE-WILSON FAMILIES. Since the Spraker#book was used as part of this document-' tation, that was where I started. But.... was unable to re- concile what I found in it, with what was passed along to me. Then found I needed to see a book, by W.W. Frost, pub. 1962s THE FROSTS AND RELATED FAMILIES, where Mr. Frost tells that Hazel Spraker had been in error, on pages 471-475, in the book THE BOONE FAMILY, as her introductry paragraphs on the pages listed above.were in conflict with considerable documentation. Pages 63-64 of THE FROSTS AND RELATED FAMILIES OF BEDFORD CO.,TN., (This was to do with an erroneous report from that writers, g - grandfather.) But it helped me to get that point straight, as if John Frost md. Sarah Boone, then.how could any John Wilson have done so except for a second marriage. Then I noted that Mr. Frost gave data that Sarah & John had settled in Lincoln Co., TN., and this also was in conflict with material given to me. So in trying to find out just when John Wilson, husband of Sarah Boone(6th Gen.) had died, I decided I needed more records of this family. In the process of trying to find who their children were and who they had married the following papers were obtained from the North Carolina State Archives........ I came up with several John Wilsons who died in NC., in between the years of 1800-1815. Knowing Sarah was a widow by 1815, from her mother's will, made the 26, August 1815, I started to order papers. Also knew that Rebecca Boone, widow of John Boone(d. 1803) had named a grandson named Andrew Wilson, and that John Wilson, the Elder(as he referred to himself in his will)had named his grandson Andrew Wilson, son of my son John Wilson, in his will, then the key word here was Andrew Wilson. I believe I wrote back in Dec., of 1983, telling you, that I would like more confirmation on these lines, be- fore sending to the Davie Library, our pedigree charts. I even asked if you knew of a researcher who might help me. You recommended Patricia Rosenthal, and she did such a marvelous job, that we can no longer call each other cousin. (laugh here please, ha!) But ..... want to say thanks in any case, as I am very satisfied with the results of that search. It was just too loose, and I was never able to feel comfortable about it. Now I know why. You see, there were two John Wilsons that fit as the husband of Sarah Boone, and in order to determine which was which, I did have to get all the documents on all John Wilsons who died during the years 1800-1815. There were several of that name that died during that time in NC., but two of them died intestate, they both had minor children, both had a son named John and a dau. named Mary, both married a woman with the given name of Sarah, and both were dead when Rebecca Boone(wife of John(1727-1803)made her will. And in the more than 1500 marriages searched, plus writing to 5 counties, there was just one marriage bond that listed a John Wilson that married a Sarah, in Rowan Co., in the right time frame, and that was the one of Sarah Boone & John Wilson,(Jr.) (One thing .... I do believe that John & Sarah did not go to Lincoln Co., TN., as claimed by several researchers, as John, husband of Sarah Boone was dead by 1811.) John Boone was the first born son. of Benjamin Boone(1706-1762) and the only child born to Benjamin's first wife Ann [Farmer] Boone (1701.1727?) who is thought to have died in childbirth or soon thereafter. Family tradition is that the baby John was wet - nursed by his aunt Sarah [Morgan] Boone. John may have spent most of his early years as a member of his uncle Squire's family, until his father Benjamin remarried about ten years after John's birth. John Boone accompanied his uncle Squire and the members of Squire's family, when they moved to the North Carolina Piedmont, leaving Exeter Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania on 01 May 1750. In 1753 John Boone received a grant of 630 acres 'ion the wa- ters of Hunting Creek in then Rowan now Davie County# North Caro- lina. My Twidwell line first known ancestor, OBEDIAH, b. c1787, VA., m. 0809 ELIZABETH CANADAY/KENNEDAY, they were living in Rowan in 1810, and next door was a JOHN KENNEDAY, in 1820, Obediah was living in the area that became Davidson in 1822, surrounded by KENNEDAYS, Sherwood Sr., we've kept data on, thinking in time to prove him as the father of Elizabeth, who was b. c1788 in Rowan Co., NC. Also Margaret McCrary -WILSON, mentioned a property in her un -recorded will,1830,that was purchased from a Thomas REED, who married an ELIZABETH WILSON, that we may find was related to our JOHN WILSON, that married a SARAH.
