JONES Box 1203 Globe, Arizona 85502 Dear Mrs Jones: HOWELL BO 0 NE Boone Farm Road Route 1 Box 365A Mocksville, NC 27028 TEL: (704) 492-5307 24 January 1985 I did list Wilcocksons in the Volume II of North Carolina Ancestors, but they were Boone-Wilcocksons - the spouse or off- spring of Sarah [Boone] Wilcockson (1724-1815) the oldest child of Squire and Sarah [Morgan) Boone. Sarah, a birthright Quaker, was born 07 June 1724 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She was living with her family in Exeter Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, when she met and fell in love with John Wilcockson, who is believed to have been born in Pennsylvania, perhaps in Philadelphia. He was a non -Quaker, and their marriage met with the disapproval of the Exeter Friends Meeting, When Squire moved his family from Exeter to the wilds of the Carolina Piedmont, John and Sarah [Boone] Wilcockson accompanied them, and it was here that their last seven children were born. There is no known connection between John Wilcockson and the Maryland Wilcockson/Wilcoxen family. I will file your listing of the Maryland Wilcoxen line in the History and Genealogy Room of the Davie County Public Library; it adds to our Wilcockson/Wicoxen/Wilcox information. You will note on the Wilcockson listing I enclose that John Wilcockson died @1800 and was buried here - perhaps near his son Isaac Wilcockson in Joppa Cemetery on the outskirts of Mocksville, in Davie County, North Carolina. After the death of her husband, widow Sarah [Boone] Wilcockson went to Kentucky - where she died in 1815. K There are no known descendants of John and Sarah [Boone] Wilcockson in present-day Davie County, North Carolina. Wilcockson and Allied Families (Willcock son, Wilcoxen, Wilcox) compiled and published in 1958 by Dorothy Ford Wulfeck was a main source of information for the entires I submitted to Volume II of North Carolina Ancestors. Have you consulted her book? I do not recall any mention of Maryland Wilcoxens in this book. Admittedly this is negative information I have fur- nished, but it does eliminate John Wilcockson (cl720-c1800) as a known relation of your husband's Wilcoxen line. ISAAC WILLCOCKSON Isaac Willcockson was -probably a brother of John Willcockson and his younger brother, George Willcockson, and seems to have been born between the two of them. A few Court Records have been found undoubtedly relating to him and his family. These are given below, followed by the author's conclusions. Minutes of Society of Friends Monthly Meeting, Goshen, Penn. p. 360- Women's Group. "8th of 2nd month, 1748. The Women Friends Acquaint this Meeting that Martha (Bon -Ban -Bone -Bane) Indexed Bane, now Willcockson hath . . . in marriage, con- trary to the Good Order established among Friends, by a Priest . . ," Further references indicate that they were married in 1747. Other Banes mentioned in the area between 1722 and 1748 were Alexander, Daniel, Jane the dau. of Alexander, Margaret, Mordecai, Mary dau. of Mordecai, Mordecai, Jr., William and Martha. Anson Co., N. C. Deed Book 1, p. 29. 13 Oct., 1750, Willian, Turner of Beckley Co., S. C. to Samuel Davis of Anson Co., N. C., 400 acres on the North side of the Great Pee Dee River, adjoining George Seinor, for 300 pounds. Witnesses: Benjamin Bowchee, Issacher Willcocks. Rowan Co., N. C. was formed from Anson in 1753. Tax List Rowan Co. 1761. Isaac Willcockson is listed near John and John Willcockson Jr. and Benjamin Cutbeard. Three Willcockson tombstones in Joppa Cemetery, originally in Rowan Co. are located near those of Squire Boone. They have been partially illegible for many years. Isaac W L l lcockson, died Sept. age 42 years. Martha Wi 11cocksoit, died Sept 9, age '30 years.. Willcockson, died Oct., ll, 1769. 1761, July 25, Rowan Co., N. C. A Court case of Isaac Willcoxen versus William Grant. 1771, Rowan Co., N. C. Court record. William, Martha and Daniel Willcockson, minor orphans of Isaac Willcockson, deceased, chose Isaac Willcockson as their guardian. Signing the guardianship bond with Isaac was George Willcockson. Mrs. Eva Murrell Harmison, 830 N. Wilson St., Royal Oak, Mich., has compiled records of Matthew Busey, one of her ancestors. From an old Busey Bible she found that Matthew Busey, b. 9 April, 1742, Maryland, m. 1767, in N. C. to Edith (Philpot) Wilcoxen, widow, b. 23 April, 1740 in N. C. Edith was the widow of Isaac Wilcoxen, by whom she had three children, whose dates of birth appear in early Busey family records: Rachel, b. 26 Feb., 1760; Catherine, b. 14 Feb., 17625, and Aaron, b. 11 June, 1764. In later paragraphs on Martha Willcockson, it is noted that her daughter married Hardy Holman. Recorded under Catherine Wilcockson with identical date of birth is a D. A. R. lineage stating that she married Isaac Holman. These scattered records assembled give the following as the probable relation- ships and approximate (or recorded) ages. ISAAC WILLCOCKSON, b. ca 1724; m. in Penn. 1747, Martha Bane and removed to Rowan Co., N. C. He died ca 1766 at the Lige of 42 and she died ca 1757 at age of 30. He m. (2) ca 1758/59, Edith Philpot, h. 23 April, 1740. There is no record in Rowan Co. of any other Isaac Willcockson 4 old enough to have married in 1758/59. By his first wife he had at least the three minor children mentioned above and perhaps others already of age in 1771, or one buried in the unidentified grave by the side of Isaac and Martha. By his 2nd wife he had the three named in the Busey records. This gives a possibility of six children: By 1st mar.: By 2nd mar.: +15 William Willcockson X18 Rachel Willcockson +16 Martha Willcockson }19 Catherine Willcockson 17 Daniel Willcockson X20 Aaron Willcockson 15. WILLIAM WILLCOCKSON, the first of the list of minor children named in 1771, was probably born about 1752/53. Being an orphan, he may have gone to Pennsylva- nia to live with relatives and receive some formal training. This paragraph appears in Spraker's "The Boone Family," p. 48: "Rachel Boone, dau. of James and Mary (Foulke) Boone, b. 10 April, 1750 (0. S.) or 21 April, 1750 (N. S.); m. William Wilcoxson, and 7-30, 1777, was con- demned by Exeter Meeting (of Society of Friends) for being married 'out' and by a priest. In an old Boone family record found in Reading, Pa., there are two entries concerning her and her family. One reads '1790 Sept. 13. Then William Wilcoxson and his family moved for North Carolina,' and the other '1797, Aug. 1. Then Rachel Wilcoxson came from North Carolina to see us, and her neighbor Elizabeth Freelan and her son Harry Freelan on the stage.' This is practically all that is known of this couple, although there is reason to suppose that their descendants were among the general Boone migration from North Carolina to Kentucky and thence to the Middle West." Rowan Co., N. C. Deed Bk. 10, p. 11. An indenture of 27 Aug., 1784 between William Hall, Rowan Co., yeoman, and William Willcockson and James McCullough, both of Township of Oley, Co. of Berks, Pa., Gentlemen, are jointly bound to a certain Buckholder of Lampter Township, Co. of Lancaster, Pa. for 320 pounds lawful money of Pa. Gold and Silver. Rowan Co., N. C. Deed Bk. 12, p. 606. 9-12, 1788. William Hall of Rowan Co., N. C. lets William Wilcoxson of Burke Co., Pa., have 393 acres on waters of Bear Creek for 244 pounds current money of N. C. Witnessed by Elizabeth Welsh and John Willcockson; proved by the latter, May, 1792. Rowan Co., N. C. Deed Bk. 13, p. 960. 4-10, 1795. William Wilcockson and Rachel Wilcockson of Rowan Co., N. C. sold to John Reese 393 acres on Bear Creek. Witnesses: John Clement, Charles Burroughs and Thomas Dagley. Proved by Dagley, May, 1795. No further information has been identified with this couple. All that is known of any of their children was found in the records of Clark Co., Ky. and seems to identify two of them. Rachel Wilcoxen, b. N. C.; d. 3 Dec., 1858, Clark Co., Ky., aged 67, unmar., dau. of William and Rachel Wilcoxen. (Ky. Reg. 47:238.) 1850 Census, Clark Co., Ky., gives William R. Sharp, age 29, b. Ky. and household of Eliza Sharp, 28, b. Ky.; Rachel Wilcoxen, 57, b. N. C.; Tarlton Wilcoxen, 60, b. Penn.; William Wilcoxen, 25, b. Ky. 1830 Census of Clark Co., Ky. gives Tarlton Wilcoxen age 40-50 with household of 1 female 30-40; 2 males, 5 to 10 and 1 female, 10-15. Research in Wilkes Co. or other areas surrounding Rowan Co. might give fur- ther data on William and Rachel (Boone) Willcockson and their family. Court Records show that, in 1771, Martha Willcockson, a minor orphan of Isaac Willcockson, joined with her two brothers, William and Danie in choosing Isaac Willcockson, as guardian. A land grant in Wilkes Co., N. C. of 308 acres south side of Yadkin River to Joseph Wilson was not recorded until 1782, but is the tract sold 8 Oct., 1790, by John Whitaker and, as guardian to Isaac Wilson, of Kentucky, to Chapman Gordon of Wilkes Co. In an article of agreement, John Whitaker of Woodford Co., Ky. 1798, relin- quished land in Wilkes Co., N. C. which had come to him through his wife, Martha W. from her former husband, Joseph Wilson of Wilkes Co., N. C. Martha's son, Isaac Wilson, was interviewed by Rev. John Shane and stated "my step -father, John Whitaker, and my mother were members of Clear Creek Church." (Draper Mss 16 CC 54) About 1809, John Whitaker and his children and son-in-law, Hardy Holman, movec to Lincoln Co., Tenn. It was so good to hear from you again, and to know you are still researching the Boone's. Your letters are most interesting. I proved my David (Sarah's first born)thru the Draper collection, and the DAR. I would be very happy to send all I have on my lines. I will send it in the next couple of months. I would like to know how your John fits into the Boones. I joined the Magna Charta on Boone -Morgan lines. Let me know when you publish your booklet. I would like the address of Sarah Ridge Rockenfield. Wulfeck made some mistakes in her book. They were on my lines. Every one makes mistakes --that is for sure. I only wish I had known about the book. Page 94 -Wulfeck book (I have a copy) Person 315 should read Isaac David, John & Sarah Willcockson. David died in Giles Co. Tn., & Isaac died in Lawrence Co. It was in the "Forks of the Yadkin" that John Boone5 met his wife Rebecca, whom local tradition describes as a member of the Bryan Family (there is no documentation) John Boone lived for over 50 years on his Granville Grant on Hunting Creek in then Rowan, now Davie County, North Carolina. Bay City, MI.148706 Mr Howell Boone Boone Farm Rd Route 1, Box 365A Mocksville, N.C. 27028 Dear Howell: Thank you so much for your letter of the 18th , including the address of The Boone Family Research Association of Missouri. My wife I were both born and educated in Columbia, Boone Co.,Mo. We were married in 1939 and removed the following spring to Portsmouth, Va., where I was employed in the Norfolk Navy Yard for a period of two years at which we removed here, Bay City, Mich. I will join the association. Also thans for the info re the 250th anniversary of Daniels birth. I know a lot of hard work went into that and you must feel good to know you are living on John's farm. I am sorry we did not ask you to go to lunch with us. When we left the library we were excited about the Wilcockson graves you spoke of and did not realize the time. After revisiting Joppa we decided to grab a bite before hitting the road. I have not been able to determine just who these Wilcocksons: were. John Sr must be there, but as you will see from the enclosed family sheets, John Jr as well as his son Isaac are buried in Mo. My grand mother on my mothers side always said she was kin to Daniel Boone. I wish I could talk to her today. A few years ago my wife decided to try to trace my ancestry to Daniel. We took for granted grandmother was descended from Daniel. Knowing nothing a- bout genealogy research we started to trace down from Daniel. We could find info on the Boone family of course, and Daniel's children but there became stuck. We had heard Grandma speak of her grand- mother Wilcoxson (which has many spellings as you know) By working b-ck from her we arrived at Sarah Boone.Wilc6ckson,'Daniels sister This would make Squire and his Sarah my sixth gt gr parents. A fer piece back. Several of our ancestors traveled from Penn to the Carolinas and after a generation or two, into Ky., thence to Boone Co.,Mo. When the Wilcocksons arrived it was all Howard Co.,Boone Co being created in 1920, missouri becoming a state in 1921 I believe. Daniel died there in 1820 and some claim he is still buried there. Kentuckyans claim to have removed the body to Kentucky. Have you heard this contradiction and what is your feeling? Possibly there is a place in the Library f;.les for these family sheets. Look them over and any comment will be wilcome.Would there a be any reason to send other family lines. Find enclosed ten dollars to artily as you see fit- the hi -way marker and or microfilm.
