Seasons Greetings:
I've finally located some books dealing with records of Lincoln
and Bedford County, Tennessee. With a bit of luck, we should be
getting a good deal of Whitaker (and,Boone and Howard and Floyd)
information. If anything turns up that should be useable, I'll
xerox copies of those pages and send them to you.
A4t-hype, u`'+-ax►?r_.+ys;_If Mark & Catherine Whitaker were J
U
well-off enough to have tombstones, there must be a will. If there
is a will, perhaps all of the living children of this couple will d
be listed, and we might be well on our way to a complete listing s'
of the children of Mark and Catherine [Boone] Whitaker.
I've been working mostly on the family of John Boone (1727-1803)
of Hunting Creek (then Rowan, now Davie County, North Carolina).
John Boone's parents were Benjamin Boone (1706-1762) and Ann [Farmer]
Boone (1701-1727?). They were members of the Exeter Friends Meet-
ing which did not record births until the mid -1750's - so the exact
birthday of John Boone is not recorded, so far as I know - NOW.
Benjamin Boone (1754-1836) oldest child of John and'
Boone (and older brother of Catherine [Boone] Whitaker) was a mem-
ber of the North Carolina (Patriot) Militia during the American
Revolution - I have seen three post-war pay vouchers for him - for
his militia service. Did Mark Whitaker serve in the Militia, or
in the Continental Line?A
As for the names of the sons of MarkU& Catherine: John was her
father's name, and Benjamin was hesildest brother's name. John
was also the name of a brother of Mark Whitaker, who like Mark
moved to Tennessee.
In that long ago era of large families, the father's name might
be given to k grandson5by each of his sons. So it is not unusual
that there were a number of Mark -Marcus Whitakers in the Forks
of the Yadkin at the same time.
With all good wishes,
&4q PGG 1 SC.

Mr. Howell Boone
Rt. 1 Box 365A
Mocksville, NC 27028
Dear Mr. Boone:
1985
44102
Thank you very much for all the information on the 250 Anniversary of Daniel
Boone's birth. I enjoyed reading it.
At the moment I do not know if I am a descendant of one of Daniel Boone's
siblings. I wrote to you on a hunch that didn't quite work out. I have L.
enclosed copies of four family group sheets. In order for you to understand a
the line of descent, the following chart should help: . U
c Z
Linda Delridge
Cecelia Boone Delridge (my mother) d °
Earl(y) R. Boone (my grandfather)
William G. Boone (great-grandfather) v
Ephraim Boone (great, great grandfather) U 0
Andrew Boone (great, great, great grandfather) cu
q7
I have only been able to locate Andrew Boone as far back as the 1860 census
of Wilkes County, NC. I do not know who his parents are.
If you are able to shed any light on my Boones, your help would be greatly
appreciated.
Sincerely,
Linda Delridge

Ddve operated the paper under the name of
Tne Times. After selling it to J.D. Newton, he
was connected with the Government Printing
Office in Washington, D.C. and was Superin-
tendant of the Alexandria Gazette in Alexan-
dria, Va. In lateryears he went into the grocery
business and was operating his store on the
Winston Rd. in Lexington at the time of his
death.
Laura Ray, b. 17 Sept. 1889 in Thomasville,
d. 17 June 1891, and is bur. in the 1hornasville
City Gem.
John Franklin Westmoreland, my great-
grandfather, was 6 months old at the time of
his father's death. Very little is known of his
early life, but he entered military service on 23
May 1864 at the age of 17, served until the end
of the war as a non-commissioned officer of
Co. C. Third Regiment (Co. J.W. Hinsdale)
N.C. Junior Reserves, and participated in the
Battles of Fort Fisher, Kinston and Ben-
nettsville.
From letters written to his family, we know
he went to Worthington, Ind. and Blooming-
ton, III. after the war, but he soon returned to
N.C., was married and purchased a farm in
Bethania Twp., Forsyth Co. On Nov. 13, 1875
and Nov. 15, 1879 Teachers Certificates were
issued to him, authorizing him to teach in the
public schools of Forsyth Co. These certifi-
cates were for the months of Dec., Jan. and
Feb. and his School Register shows he taught
in Dist. No. 14 of Forsyth Co., beginning with
the year 1878 for a salary of 820 per month. He
taught children from ages 6 to 18, and the
register gave his address as Sedge Garden,
N.C.
John Franklin Westmoreland organized the
first Sunday School class at Hickory Ridge
Meth Church, Germanton, Stokes Co. and a
list of the members is in the possession of
Mrs. Sam P. Heath, his granddaughter. No
date is shown on the paper, but his first 3
children were among those signing the peti-
tion.
In Sept. 1883 he moved his family to Tho-
masville, and was probably employed in the
chair factory owned by his brother, David
Stephen Westmoreland. About 1887 the for-
mer teacher felt the printing urge and started a
commercial printing business in his home. He
installed a hand printing press which took 3
people to operate — one to put in the sheet of
paper, one to turn the press, and one to re-
move the paper. He first printed business
statements and envelopes, and soon needing
more space, he moved into a building between
his home and the chair factory on Randolph St.
An article in the Lexington Dispatch dated
Aug. 13. 1890 stated that J.F. Westmoreland
had purchased the Farm and Village News and
would begin publishing a paper at an early
date. It is thought his first Thomasville News
was printed in Sept. 1890, and on publishing
day each member of the family was called to
help. His dau., Nancy Rebecca, recalled that
her job was folding papers. About the time he
founded the newspaper, he erected a building
on his home lot to accommodate both the job
printing business and newspaper production.
Fire fighters in 1897 wrapped this building
in guilts and kept them soaked with water to
keep it from burning when the adjacent chair
factory burned.
He served 3 terms as a member of the
Thomasville Town Council. In July 1897 in
Raleigh, he suffered a stroke after serving the
winter term there as a State Senator. He spent
his remaining years in a wheel chair, but this
did not keep him from managing his printing
and publishing business. The name of the
newspaper was changed more than once by
the owner, but by 1905 it was The Times and
John Franklin Westmoreland served as its Edi-
tor for 23 years.
His obituary in the May 15, 1913 issue of
The Times reads:
-we will say in a modest way that he always had the
town's best interest at heart, always advoand
working for any and all measures that seemedcatory m his
judgment Inr the betterment of the town in which he
lived and loved so well. He, with his newspaper, was
greatly instrumental in securing the graded schools,
the belt line (railroad), the electric system, water and
sewage system and other matters of progress."
My mother and I often visited my great-
grandmother, Nancy Ellen, and I remember
the children liked to play in the chinaberrytree
in her back yard. After her death, I was given
the cut glass and pewter cruet set she kept on
her dining room table. Needless to say, this is
one of my prized possessions.

ington to Roscoe Cox (William Cox and Minnie
Baucom), b. 14 Feb. 1917 in Danville, Va.
Following the printing tradition, Kathleen was
taught to run the linotype machine by her fa-
ther and she worked for him in his printing
office. After his death, she worked in Sanford,
Rural Hall, Thomasville and Lexington and at
the time of her retirement was working for the
Greensboro Daily News, Greensboro, Roscoe

are living in Lexington.

Dec. 1957 in Chesterfield, S.C. Carlene (Sim-
mons) Johnson, b. 8 April 1923 in Rowan Co.
Since we were about the same age, Miller
seemed more like a brother to me than an
uncle, and we shared a lot of childhood memo-
ries. He also followed in his father and grand-
father's footsteps by learning the printing
business. He worked for shops in Lexington,
the Greensboro Daily News, and at the time of
his death was with the Chicago Sun -Times.

Betty Ann, (adopted), b. 5Aug. 1924, M. 1.

Michael Kaplan (Mrs. Sally Kaplan) b. 28
March 1922 in Passaic, N.J. Mike is retired
from the Air Force and in the summer works
for the Park Service. They live on their farm
near Bryant Pond, Maine.
My grandfather learned the printing and
newspaper business from his father and fol-
lowed this work until shortly before his death.
In the towns of Kings Mountain, Gastonia,
Lexington and Thomasville, all in N.C., he was
engaged in the printing business.
In the spring of 1926, he moved to Mt. Airy,
where he opened a job printing shop and in
May established the Mt. AiryStar, an indepen-
dent weekly newspaper. The Star enjoyed
rapid growth, but failing health forced him to
dispose of his latest venture in the printing and
newspaper business in which he had engaged
since boyhood. At the time of its sale, the Star
was one of the most widely circulated news-
papers in that section of the state.
"Papa T" d. when I was 7, but I remember
going to his printing office in Mt. Airy. He
would be busy setting up type for the paper,
but never so busy that he couldn't stop and talk
to me. "Muver" loved flowers and truly had a
"green thumb." It made no difference what
she planted, everything grew for her, and
wherever she lived she always had pretty flow-
ers. Like all grandmothers, she was a good
cook, and one of my special Christmas memo-
ries is the sea foam candy she made for us. In
the fall, she made chow -chow and pepper rel-
ish. Today, when I make the pepper relish
from her recipe, it never tastes quite as good
as hers.
Both of them were Baptists (as were all of
their children), and Democrats, but I have
been told that he always said he voted for the
man instead of the party.

The entries in the Index of North Carolina Ancestors were my attempt
to correctly and completely list the members of the Boone Family who lived
"in the Forks of the Yadkin" then Rowan now Davie County, North Carolina.
Note that the entry for Mark and Catherine (Boone) Whitaker lists the
date of the Marriage Bond.he actual marriage may have taken place days
later. In those days the grm and a friend or member of the family would
ride on horseback ( or walk:))`` the 20 miles to Salisbury, North Carolina
and obtain a marriage bond. The journey and the "official business" might
take an entire day. The trip home might take the better part of the next
day, and the actual wedding might not take place until both families and
all friends.had been assembled.
I believe that Patsy Whitaker was a granddaughter of Mark and Katie,
and she was married to a McLemore; the only mention I have seen of Patsy
led me believe that at the time she was in the area of Mulberry(Forks) in
Lincoln County, Tennessee, she was already a widow - an assumption that
may be totally false - but there is no mention of her husband (or children).
Enclosed is all the material in the Davie County Public Library
History and Genealogy Room on Mark Whitaker; the information on the children
of Mark and Katie was provided by Michael E Collier, whose research is
ongoing. Contact him for further information. He is working on contract
in another state, so he takes a long time to get his mail and a long time
to answer his letters. Also enclosed is C. Bruce Whitaker's genealogy
which traces the Whitakers back to those born in England.
Also there is another descendant of Mark and Catherine (Boone) Whitaker
who is conducting research into their children and present-day descendants:

(1) "Local Tradition" describes the wife of John Boone (1727-1803)
of Hunting Creek as one Rebecca Bryan (cl735-1820) - a daughter of
Morgan Bryan (1671-1763) and his wife Martha [Strode] Bryan (1697-
1762). Neither this Rebecca nor a Sarah Bryan are mentioned in
the will of Morgan Bryan - or what can be read of the will, which
is now a tattered fragment in the North Carolina Archives in Ral-
eigh, North Carolina.
Bryan Family "tradition" has produced two rosters for the children
of Morgan and Martha [Strode] Bryan. The roster I worked from in
June of 1983 listed 11 children, including Rebecca and Sarah. The
other roster, with 9 children, conforming to what can be read of
Morgan Bryan's will is used by John K. Bryan, Jr in his research.
This second roster omits both Rebecca and Sarah.
John K. Bryan feels that if John Boone's Rebecca was a Bryan, she
might have been the daughter of William Bryan, and thus a niece of
Morgan Bryan, or the daughter of some other Bryan, whose relation-
ship to Morgan Bryan is unknown.
(2) In your letter you enclosed as much information on the Whitaker
Family as I've seen; your material is now included as part of the
Whitaker Files in the History and Genealogy Room of the Davie County
Public Library in Mocksville, North Carolina.
In case you have not seen the 1981 book on Marriages of Rowan County,
North Carolina (1753-1868) I enclose the pages relating to various
Whitakers. Our files also contained a letter (12 June 1969) from a
Don Brown of Toledo, Ohio, with information on the early Whitakers.
In his letter, he refers to the Whitaker Methodist Meeting House.
The Meeting house has long since been demolished; there is a grave-
yard which remains. There are no Whitaker tombstones in this cem-
etery, and there is no record of a Whitaker ever being buried there.
There is a Whitaker Cemetery 24 miles north east of Mulberry Village
on the east side of the East Fork of Mulberry Creek, in Lincoln
County, Tennessee where both Mark Whitaker (1750-1842) and Catherine
Boone, wife of Mark Whitaker (1760-1845) are buried with legible
gravestones. Have you compiled a listing of their children?
Hoping that some of your questions are answered satisfactorily,
