THOMPSON FAMILY

John Theophilus Thompson was born in Frederick County, Maryland, December
7, 1759 and died in Bedford County, Tennessee April 10, 1826, and probably
buried in the Patton - Thompson Graveyard on Naron Road in 21st Civil District.
His wife was Mary Newcome. Theophilus was a Soldier of the American Revolution.
They came to Bedford County, Tennessee from Orange County, North Carolina in
1819 or 1820.
The known children of Theophilus and Mary Thompson were:

to Elizabeth Thompson. He died March 30, 1824 in Bedford
County, Tennessee.
2 - Samuel Thompson, born ca 1784, married 1st May 16, 1807 to Nancy
Trice, Orange County, North Carolina, married 2nd to Mrs.
Mary Davis of Bedford County, Tennessee in 1842. He died
1858.
3 - Newcome Thompson, born December 27, 1792 probably Orange County,
North Carolina, married July 6, 1820 to Amie Fisher. He /
died September 9, 1869 Bedford County, Tennessee. l
Joseph Thompson, son of Theophilus and Mary Thompson, married Elizabeth
Thompson, December 20, 1804. They had the following children:
Anna, Eliza, James, Harriet, Calvin, John A., Martha J.,
William F., Newton C., and Isabella.
Samuel Thompson, son of Theophilus and Mary Thompson, born 1784 in North
Carolina, married 1st in 1807 in Orange County, North
Carolina to Nancy Trice. Their children:
1 - Joseph Thompson, 1809-1877, married 1st Nancy White, 2nd Ann E.
Carey. He had six children.
2 - Newcome(b) Thompson, born October 10, 1812, died January 13, 1882,
buried in Thompson Graveyard on Mr. Bud Solomon's Place.
He ma ried Lavinia Burt, daughter of William and Susan Burt.
m They lived at Thompson Shop. There were eight children.
He was a large land owner, on both sides of the Lewisburg
Highway near Thompson Shop. One daughter Sue married
William T. Solomon.
v Samuel Thompson married 2nd Mary Davis, a widow of Bedford County, in 1842.
2 They had no children. However she had children by a pre-
vious marriage. Samuel was a large land owner and lived
1st, West of Shelbyville near Flat Creek, last, on the West
side of Sugar Creek, Northwest of the Newcome Thompson, 2nd,

Road. Samuel was a veteran of the War of 1812 from
North Carolina. He died in 1858 and is buried in the
Thompson Family Graveyard on the Bud Solomon place at
Thompson Shop. Much of the land owned by Samuel and
Newcome, II, was owned 1st by Thomas Tolbot of David-
son County, Tennessee and later Johnithan Mosely, who
moved to Texas.
Newcomb Thompson, son of Theophilus and Mary Thompson was born in North
Carolina on December 27, 1792 and died in Bedford County,
Tennessee September 8, 1869 and is buried in Willow Mount
• Cemetery in Shelbyville. He married in Bedford County on
July 6, 1820 to Amie Fisher, a daughter of Michael and
Christiana Fisher. She was born in North Carolina May 22,
1805 -and died March 20, 1886 and is buried beside*her-
husband. Newcomb came to Bedford County about 1819.
Goodspeed says 1809, which is in error. He was a Veteran
of War of 1812 from North Carolina. Newcomb and Amie
lived the greater part of their married life on their farm
at the corner of_the Lewisburg Highway and Naron Road,
.about two miles west of Shelbyville. The Thompson house
is still standing.._Their children:
1 - Mary Ann, 1821 -1900, -married -Jason Thompson _Brittian.
2 - George Washington, 1823-1908, married Martha M. Cannon.
3 - Newcome, Jr. or. III, 1825- (: ) , married 1st Catherine Davis,
2nd Frances Dixon.
4 - Samuel A., 1827-1916, married 1st Martha Bi -.-Fisher. -
5 - Michael Fisher, 1828-1855, married Martha Holland.
6 - John W,, 1831-1907, married Mary J. Pannell.
7 Jacob Fisher, 1833-1889, never married, CSA.
8 - Elizabeth Jane, 1835-1854, married William A. Griffis. -
9 - William M., 1837-1910, married Cyntha CSA.
10 - Martha Washington,:1839-(.,-, .), married Dr. Jabus S. Nowlin.

I, Mary Thompson having the proper exercise of.my mental facalties, but
being advanced in years and laboring under bodily indisposition, do make and
publish this as my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking and making void
all former Wills by me any time made..
Item the first - I direct and devize that after my death my funeral expences
and all W just debts be paid, out of any moneys I may die possessed of, or
which may first come into the hands .of my executor.:
_In the second place I bequeath unto my son James Davis the- _one fourth part
of the balance of my estate after paying liabilities as pointed out in the
first Item above, of this my Last Will and Testament.-.
In the third place ::- I bequeath unto my son David Davis a portion of my es-
-state equal.,to_ the portion above devized to my son James. - that is to say
one fourth of the balance of my..estate after paying my -liabilities.

In the fourth place - I bequeath unto my son John E. Davis the balance of
my estate not herein devized to my sons James & David together with the
amount hereinafter devized to my Grandchildren Mary Arai Thompson and John
Thompson, that is to say I devize and bequeath to him the one half of toy
estate less the amount devized in the next item of this my Will.
In the fifth place - I give and bequeath unto my grandchildren Mary *Ann
Thompson and John Thompson children and heirs of my deceased daughter Susan
Catharine Thompson the wife of our Newcom Thompson the 3rd -the sum of _
Twenty five dollars a pease - Dollars each, to be paid out of portion speci-
fied in the fourth item above as devized to my son John E. Davis.
In the sixth and last place- I nominate and appoint my son James Davis
executor to this my Lest Will and Testament.

We find that:
Samuel Thompson departed this life in Bedford County in 1858 or 9;
his Will had been proved before the 1859 Term of County Court, and ,
entered in the Will Book but that both the book and the original C
Will were destroyed by fire in 1863, but that a certified copy had
been made before the fire; and that this copy was accepted as genuine
and incorporated in the bill.
Samuel Thompson Will.
I Samuel Thompson of the County of Bedford and State of Tennessee, ' be-
ing in sound mind but in feeble health, do make and consitiute this my Last
Will and Testament, hereby revoking all others -
First: I Will and bequeath to my wife Mary Thompson the following property
to wit: two negroes to be worth nine hundred dollars each. -to hold the same
in her name, - I further give her two horses, one buggy, all the household
and kitchen furniture - 20 head of sheep, 20 head of stock hogs, 1 Yoke
Steers, and 1 wagon, 12 hundred dollars in cash notes, 2 good milch cows,
all the above property to be her'own to do as she may see proper with - I
further wish and desire that she -should have all the lands, including the
dwelling house, that lies on the West side of . -Sugar Creek, during her lifetime •
or widowhood. The Twelve hundred dollars above mentioned alluded to was twelve
hundred dollars I received by my said wife at our marriage.' _
I.also wish her to have all the wheat that I have on hand - 100 barrels
of corn - all the pork that I shall lay by this year - The lands that I give
toy wife during her life, or widowhood, is only to be that portion west of
Sugar Creek, of the tract of land I now live on - all the fodder and oats
that.may be necessary to winter 2 horses and 2 cows.

Second - I Will and bequeath that all the balance of my estate be equally
divided between my son Newcomb Thompson and the wife and children of my son
Joseph Thompson for their separate use. And I hereby appoint Newcomb Thomp-
son Trustee to manage and control said property with full power to sell any
of said property - for the purpose of raising and educating said children -
and he is further empowered to sell any of said property at the request of
said Joseph Thompson and wife in writing or either of them in case of the
death of one -' and at the death of Joseph Thompson and wife, all that may
remain of said property shall be equally divided between the surviving heirs
of said Joseph Thompson and wife, except that portion going to my grandson
Joseph H. Thompson, which is to go to his wife and children.
It is my further wish and Will that should legatees differ in the divis-
ion of my_slaves that they be sold for cash, so'that each one may buy such
ones as they may desire, and the -one getting more than their share agreeable
to this my Last Will and Testament, shall pay back to the other, so as the
instructions of this Will may be fully carried out.
And I do hereby appoint my son Newcomb Thompson, my son Joseph Thompson,
and my stepson James Davis, my Executors to this my last Will and Testament.

JOSHUA YEATES

Joshua Yeates-was born in 1776 in North Carolina. He migrated from '
Kentucky to Bedford County, Tennessee before 1814. He purchased 300 acres
of land from Elisha Hall. This land was part of the Samuel Patton and
Nichols'1000 acre Grant and was located on the Fayetteville Highway near the
Center Church Road. The homeplace, after the death of Yeates, was owned for
many years by Kenneth Pybas, now Daniel farm.
Joshua Yeates died in 1849. He was an elder in the Sugar Creek Baptist
Church..: -
Joshua Yeates had the following children.
1 - Anna, married Joseph Morton,- lived in Bedford County.
2 - Martha, married Jesse W. Brown and they lived in Bedford County.
3 - Nancy, married Joseph Bartley, they lived in Missouri.
4 - Sarah, married John Patton, they lived in Mississippi.
5 - Isabella,'married Elijah Vickers, they lived in Lincoln Canty, TN.
6 - Elizabeth, married Samuel Mc. Patton, went to Marshall County, Miss.
7 - Hannah, married Samuel Patton Balch, they went to Mississippi.
8 - William, went to Mississippi.
9 - Rebecca, married Tyne Harrison, they .lived in Bedford County.
10 - Malinda, married John U. Bledsoe.
Rebecca and Malinda died prior to their father's death.
