Mocksville, N. C.
Dear Howell,
I received your letter of the 15th, and a few weeks earlier a letter
from Mrs. Bean inquiring about her connection to John Penry. I was
glad to give her the information we gleaned from the various N. C.
sources. As I told her, we did not know the names of our Penry ancestors
when we started, and therefore copied much information (but probably
not all) about the Penrys not in our direct line. So what I have might
not be complete, but I did make the connection.
Here is what 1 found: For some reason when I listed the children of
John Penry from his will ir, the Davie County will records Vol. I Page 116,
I left Mary E. Nash off the list on the family tree of the Penry-McMahan,s.
The censuses list only one John Penry in 1830. The Rowan County marriage
record lists the marriage of John Penry to Susan Smith Dec 13, 1827.
(Alater deed gives her name as Susannah).
I found no direct connection from John to a father, but in the will above
his brother James is named executor. In the archives in Raleigh I found
a record of the sale of Thomas Penry's estate in 1824 and 1828. This
lists three Jameses - James Sr., James Jr. and James of Samuel. That
means John and James could be the sons of either James Sr, or Samuel.
The Penrys in Davie Co. said Samuel had a son Thomas born in 1808.
The census of 1820 shows only one son for Samuel and that had to be Thomas
and therefore John had to be the son of James.
It is certain therefore that Mary Nash is the daughter of John Penry
who is probably the son of James Penry (1779-1854).
It was good to hear from you, and we hope to return to your end of the state
some day to try to trace the lines:a little further back. So far we have
not gotten any further information from any of the Penrys. If we do
come back we will look you up for another enjoyable visit.
We treasure the pictures of the Penry cabin you sent before, and want
to thank you again.

Dear Jacks
As you will see from enclosed items, the North Carolina
Genealogical Society is going to print another volume of North
Carolina. Ancestors. I was able to enter my Poones in the first
volumes ie - John and Rebecca [Bryan] Boone, their children and
any grandchildren known to have been born/lived/died in North
Carolina,
I hope that we will now be able to add collateral lines.
Will you venture to do the Penry line? The first volume has

spouse of my Hannah Boone), Item 12 of the Instruction Sheet

Second of October 1982, For me this was a deeply emotion -
charged experience. Admittedly, we rode in a campervan, while
Daniel and his companions went on foot. Still, we were as close
as one oan travel on paved roads to Daniel's actual route. We
started At the Boone Tract at Bear Creek, which is about a mile
from Center Church, where James and Hannah [Boone] Penry are
buried.
The entire route was memorable for me, and even the synthe-
tic perfection of the rebuilt (and re-sited) Boonesborough was
a thrill. We camped overnight in the sycamore grove along side
the river - near/over the original site of the fort. I slept
out-of"doors and awoke....the next morn .ng with heavy fog all about...
so thief that the sycamores, gathering moisture on leaves and
branches, dripped like rain on my sleeping bag. I could imagine
myself. one of Daniel's roadcutter8 of 1775 - for a moment at least,
I enclose copies of my summary of the journey and map of
the route. When you return to the Carolina Piedmont - retracing
this route is a mustq for 'it is, I assume, the route that your
Susannah EMeMahan.] Peary and her children took on their trek to
Ohio.
The Helper letter states that there were 13 children born to
Fames and Hannah [Boone] Penry -.11 of whom grew to maturity
your most current listing shows 8 of the 11. I enclose a copy
of a listing by Charles Williams of Davie Pounty, which identi-
fies 10 by name. It would be grand if we could `identify all 11.

Penry was born 1779 in ROWAN County and died -1857 in DAVIE County.

A cabin described as the PENRY CABIN:
measurements:
OUTSIDE: Front 20'0" ( front & back)
Side 16'0" (both sides)
Porch 15'1" long; 411" deep;
height 6161, (front of house
Door 61411 high; 3' 3" wide ( both front & back doors)
INSIDE: Interior has been "boarded" so that the log walls
are covered and so is the beamed ceiling
Originally I feel the floor was earth, the walls
were logs chinked with clay and the ceiling had
stringer beams exposed with wide plank flooring
for the loft area.
FIREPLACE: Fireplace was brick and so was entire chimney -
it is likely that the bricks arrived at the
same time that the floor was changed from dirt
to boards. Original chimney might have been
fieldstone chinked with clay, with upper portion
made of sa lings lashed together and chinked
with clay7mud . There was &lways the danger of
fire in such a chimney - and without exception
such a chimney was on one end of the house
Perhaps at the same time a brick chimney was
installed, there was a window placed alongside
the chimney - for ventilation - otherwise there
was just a front and back door facing each other
in the corner, near fireplace was a ladder/stairs
to the loft - easy for children to scamper up,and
down, but a bit steep for adults & old folks
there was one window in the loft/attic - opposite
the chimney
Penry cabin was along side Interstate highway 40
to reach it exit at 601 and take Davie CountSr Road
1345 (Blaise Church Road) to end, and then walk in
woods near I--40 right of way fence until you come
to Penry cabin - perhaps 250 yards

Mrs VIRGINIA R BEAN

Summerville,SC 29483
Dear Mrs Bean:
I was interested to receive your letter with information
about descent from a Mary Penry, whom you believe was a daughter
of John Penry and his wife Susannah [Smith] Penry.
Enclosed is the most complete chart I have yet seen on.the..
Penry Family of Davie/Rowan County, North Carolina.
You will note that it indicates the marriage of James Penry
(1779-1854) to Hannah Boone6(1779-1857) - a daughter of Johns and
Rebecca Boone.
John Boone5 (1727-1803) was the son of Benjamin Boone 4(1706-»1762 )
and Ann [Farmer] Boone(1701-1727?). His paternal grandparents were.
George Boone3 (1666-1744) and Mary [Maugridge ] Boone (1669--1740)
Thus John Boone5 was a first cousin of Daniel Boone5(1734-1:$20)0
I am a direct descendant of this John Boone, and it is.he'and
his direct Boone descendants that have been my major preoccupation'.
What I know of the Penry Family has been given to me by Penry desay.
c endant s .
Prompted by your letter, I examined the microfilm of the 1850
Davie County Federal Census, wherein I founds
268 Abraham Nash 21 M Farmer Davie County(birthplace)
Mary 20 F to It
_ Nancy Ferebee 95 F Currituck County
3
There is only one other Nash Household in the Davie 1850 Census:

Abraham Nash, who according to Davie County Marriage Records was
married twice in Davie County:

Abraham Nash 23 OCT 1848 Elizabeth Garner
Abraham Nash 24 JAN 1850 Mary E. Penry
As noted Abraham Nash and his SECOND wife Mary are listed in,
the 1850 Census, which was completed in October of that year.
In the listing prepared by the Saylers in 19800 based on any.

may assume that there were other daughters including Mary E, Penry

I was interested to receive your letter with information
about descent from a Mary Penry, whom you believe was a daughter
of John Penry and his wife Susannah [Smith] Penry.
Enclosed is the most complete chart I have yet seen on the
Penry Family of Davie/Rowan County, North Carolina.
You will note that it indicates the marriage of James Penry
(1779-1854) to Hannah Boone 6(1779-1857) - a daughter of Johns and
pebecca Boone.
John Boone5(1727-1803) was the son of Benjamin Boone 4(1706-1762)
and Ann [Farmer] Boone(1701-1727?)• His paternal grandparents were
George Boone3(1666-1744) and Mary [Maugridge] Boone(1669-1740).
Thus John Boone5 was a first cousin of Daniel Boone5(1734-1820).
I am a direct descendant of this John Boone, and it is he and
his direct Boone descendants that have been my major preoccupation.
What I know of the Penry Family has been given to me by Penry des-
cendants.
Prompted by your letter, I examined the microfilm of the 1850
Davie County Federal Census, wherein I found:
268 Abraham Nash 21 M Farmer Davie County(birthplace)
Mary 20 F " I.
Nancy Ferebee 95 F Currituck County
There is only one other Nash Household in the Davie 1850 Census:
787 Wilie B Nash 49 M Farmer Virginia
Lydia 45 F Rowan County
Alexander 18 M Davie "
Richard 16 M "
Ann 12 F "
Nancy 9 F "
Mary Cooper 28 F Davidson County Mulatto
Casper 3 M " " "
William P Nash 20 M Farmer Davie County
May we assume that Wilie B & Lydia. Nash are the parents of
Abraham Nash, who according to Davie County Marriage Records was
married twice in Davie County:
172
2
Abraham Nash 23 OCT 1848 Elizabeth Garner
Abraham Nash 24 JAN 1850 Mary E. Penry
As noted Abraham Nash and his SECOND wife Mary are listed in
the 1850 Census, which was completed in October.of that year.
In the listing prepared by the Saylers in 19809 based on any.`
and all information they had at that time, there is no listing of
the daughters of John and Susannah [Smith] Penry - only the sons,
with perhaps a daughter —name unknownm who married a Walker. We
may assume that there were other daughters including Mary E, Penry:
who became Abraham Nash's second wife.
The chart indicates that John Penry was the third child born
to James and Hannah [Boone] Penry. All of their childrens grand-
children, etc are descendants of John Boone, first cousin of Daniel.

Dear Mr. Boone:
Thank you so much for your letter of July 15th and the information
about the Boone and Penry families.
Several years ago I contacted the senior genealogist in Salisbury
about Hannah Boone and he investigated and stated positively that
she was the daughter of John Boone and that John Boone was the son
of Squire Boone, therefore a brother of Daniel Boone.
I also have the Spraker "The Boone Family" book and was unable
to verify the statement of the Salisbury genealogist.
Therefore, what you tell me is correct.
This is very good informationmd I c `a appreciate the two
photographs of the gravestones of James Penry and his wife,
Hannah (Boone) Penry.
It would be nice to talk with you in case you are sometimes in
Lexington. I live at 119 W. lst Avenue, as you know, and my office
is with Peerless, Inc. (Armstrong flooring distributors) at the
Linwood exit on I-85, approximately four miles south of Lexington.
With kind regards,

I've just read the biography of your father in the Her1lagein
of Davidson County (pages 412«►413) wherein it is stated " John
Boone was the son of Squire Boone eta." There is a "local tra-a
dition" to this effects but this John Boone was actually the son
of Benjamin Boone (1706.1762) and Ann [Farmer] Boone (1701"1727?)e
I enclose xerox copies of pages 41,43 of Hazel A. Spraker's The
+_„moo ne Fni„Jy ( 1922) which correctly identifies John Boone*
Also enclosed is chart of the children of John and Rebecca
[?Bryan?] Boone. Note that the dates for James and Hannah [Boone]
Penry are complete0 the infomation is taken from their tombstones
in the Center Methodist Church Cemetery in Davie County# North Car,-
olina.
Raymond Penry of Winston»Salem has furnished me with his
working/outline charts of the Penry Family. He lists 8 children
of James and Hannah [Boone] Penrye I have read a letter by He He
Helper# a neighbor of the Penry Family in the 1880's+ and Mr.
Helper.states that there were 13 children born to James and Hannah
[Boone] Penry# 11 of whom survived to maturity. Certainly Eli_
Peary, who married Catherine Headen# was one of their 11 surviving
children.
Thomas Penr(e)y#..James Penry's..fath•er* married Ann(a) Slevin
Slevin is a name which appears infrequently in Ireland# but it
dose apAear in Ireland a The Slevin name left the Forks of the Yad-

no local. Slevin to correctly identify the national origin of the

'd proprietors to whom King Charles 11,
5th and 17th years of his reign had
approximately all of N.C. and S.C.
I the proprietors gave their grant back
to the king. Vicount Carteret kept his, passing
same eventually to his grandson, John Earl
Granville, who himself was lord president o
his majesty's most honorable Privy Council.
The grant by George II to Earl Granville
took place on 17 Sept. 1744 and the grant b
Earl Granville of 330 acres to Hugh Moffitt wa
contingent upon a down payment of 10 shil-
lings, sterling money, and a yearly rent sum o
13 shillings, 2 pence half, which is at the rat
of 3 shillings sterling for every 100 acres,
providing that 9 the yearly rent is not paid, I
therefore would be effected and the present

This deed was signed by Hugh Moffitt an
witnessed by James Watson and William Mof

the grant was 2 Oct. 1761.
Hugh Moffitt and his brother, Charles, also

The Moffat clan in the little town of Moggat
Scotland, was small and weak and allied itsel
with the very powerful Stewart clan. The Mof
fatt clan was almost wiped out at one time b
the Johnston clan. The little book History
Moffat, published in 1860, and belonging
one time to some individual in South Africa
had been purchased from the Genealogic
Publishing Co. of Baltimore, Md. It notes,
one point, that the effort of the Johnston cla
to burn down a church in which the Moffat cla
was having a meeting resulted in the death
many.
Tradition has it that the father of Hugh an
Charles and William Moffat was Robert Moll

Isaac Johnson on 14 Sept. 1799. On the same
day he deeded 208 acres to Joshua Hadley.
y The sum total is 430 acres which may account
s
forthe fact that the heirs of Hugh Moffatt on 10
Feb. 1811, reimbursed Joshua Hadley for 12

e extent of $180.78, 75 acres having been lostto

Joseph Vestal Moffitt, Sr. Entered Guilford
College in the tall of 1899 as did his father,
William Henry Moff it, in the class of 1874, as
did his sisters, Perle and Rosa May, and his
brothers, Ralph and Oscar, but he stayed only
3 months and dropped out because of poor

health. On 1 Jan. 1900 he entered the employ
of William E. Holt, proprietor of Wennonah
Cotton Mills, with which organization he re-
mained for 48 years.
On 22 July 1902 Mr. Moffitt, then 18, along
with C.A. Hunt, Jr., W.E. Holt, Jr., L.L. Bar-
bee, and a Mrs. Mendenhall founded Peerless
Mattress Co., to operate in the old Normal
School building (in recent years a shoe store
just below the South Main branch of Lexington
State Bank). The mattress factory later moved
to the corner of S. State St. and W. 7th Ave.
During all those years Mr. Moffitt continued
his 10-12 hour day employment at Wennonah
Cotton Mills and managed the affairs of Peer-
less Mattress Co. from his father's office in
Moffitt Grocery (across from the March Hotel)
in the evenings, where he typed his invoices
and interviewed salesmen offering mattress
tickings and other materials. The mattress fac-
tory burned in 1915. The corporation was dis-
solved. Mr. Moffitt rebuilt the plant and con-
tinued as proprietor until 30 June 1946 when
Peerless was reincorporated.
Mr. Moffitt was a co-founder of Dacotah

1909. He was instrumental in the reorganiza-
tion of that concern in the late 1930s. He was
elected Pres. of the Commercial Bank of Lex-
ington after the merger of the Bank of Lexing-
ton with the Commercial & Savings Bank (E.B.
Craven, Pres.) in July, 1932. He got there just
in time for the trouble. He served as Pres. of
the Commercial Bank of Lexington until the
date of his death. During the years of the Great
Depression, he arranged the sale of Nokomis
(now Philpott Furn.) to Erlanger Mills, the sale
of Johnson Silk Mills to Burlington Mills (now
Raleigh Road plant), the idle Dacotah Mills to
the Moore family and local investors. He was
also a director of Perpetual Savings and Loan,
Mutual Savings and Loan and Industrial Sav-
ings and Loan and Industrial Bank of Lexing-

Dear Mr. Boone,
ly1rs. John Sayler of 10f 13arbarry Dr., Berea, Oli, sent me proof twat my
husband's great—great grandmother Diary E. P&MY m. 24 Jan 1850 to Abraham NASI
in Davie Co. NO is a daughter of John PENRY (1805-1658) m. 13 Dec 1827 to
Susan SMITH in Davie Co. NC. John PtNRY's will is recorded in Vol. 19 p. 165
oY the Dave Co. hC records. His will lists children: Diary E. NASH, Pleasant L.
PhWRY, william H. PAMY, Joseph M. PiNRY, and James F. PENRY, along wi h granddau.
Sarah Jane WAUCLR. All of these children except Diary E. PMRY NASH are listed:
with the family of John PMi Y on he 1650 Davle Uo. census. A daughter, Emily is
also listed on the 1650 census , and must be the mother of the granddaughter.
This proves that my husband is a descendant of John BOONE and Rebeoea BRYAN'$'
through their daughter Hannah BOONS (1779-1857) and James PENNY (1779-1654)•
I guess this makes my husband your fourth, fifth, or sixth cousin. I have
ordered the BOONB bookie from the Davie Co. Public -Library. Is there any
material available for the parents of gebecca BRfANT m. .John BOUNET
I know that you are collecting information about the descendants of John BOULj
and Hebacca RUYAN'Lp so I am sending you the information I have concerning my
husband's descent from James P11THY and Hannah BOONE.
Thank you so much for all the help you have given me. Hon and I are going to
be in NO in October to "tombstone hunt" and if time permits would like to call,
cn you.
Sincerely,
n

Mr. Howell Boone
Boone Farm Road
Mocksville, N. C.
Dear Howell.,
I received your letter of the 15th, and a few weeks earlier a letter
Here is what I found: For some reason when I listed the children of
John Penry from his will in the Davie County will records Vol. I Page 116,
I left Mary E. Nash off the list on the family tree of the Penry-McMahan!s.
The censuses list only one John Penry in 1830. The Rowan County marriage
record lists the marriage of John Penry to Susan Smith Dec 13, 1827.
(Alater deed gives her name as Susannah).
I found no direct connecuion from John to a father, but in the will above
his brother James is named executor. In the archives in Raleigh I found.
a record of the sale of Thomas Penry's estate in 1824 and 1828. This
lists three Jameses - James Sr., James Jr. and James of Samuel. That
means John and James could be the sons of either James Sr. or Samuel.
The Penrys in Davie Go. said Samuel had a sore Thomas horn in 1.808.
The census of 1820 shows only one son for Samuel and that had to be 'I'homas
and therefore John had to be the son of James.
It is certain therefore that Mary Nash is the daughter of John Penry
who is probably the son of James Penry (1779-1854).
It was good to hear from you, and we hope to return to your end of the state
some day to try to trace the lines;a little further back. So far we have
not gotten any further information from any of the Penrys. If we do
come back we will look you up for another enjoyable visit.
We treasure the pictures of the Penry cabin you sent before, and want
to thank you again.
