Dear Mrs Laniers
Your assumption was corrects Hannah [Penry7] Kurfees (1820-c1910)
was the mother of Sarah E.(Eliza) [Kurfees81 Summers.
Hannah [Penry7] Kurfees was the daughter of James Penry (1779-1854)
and Hannah [Boone 61 Penry (1779-1857). Her Boone grandparent was
John Boone5 (1727-1803) son of Benjamin Boone 4(1706-1762) and the
grandson of George Boone3 (1666-1744).
John Boone5 was a first cousin of Daniel Boone5 (1734-1820)- the
frontiersman -explorer.
John Boone5 was buried "along side" his uncle and aunt - Squire
Boone 4(1696-1765) and Sarah [Morgan] Boone (1700-1777) in a small
burying ground then called "Burying Ridge" - now known as Joppa
Cemetery, Davie County, North Carolina. The gravestones of Daniel
Boone's parents have survived; John Boone's gravestone has unfor-
tunately disappeared.
In 1922 Hazel Atterbury Spraker published The Boone Family in which
she numbered ALL Boone descendants by generation;,in your Boone
lineage you are in the 12th generation.
a
I enclose a series of 4 generation charts for you to list your
lineage. Note in the Kurfees chart I enclose, I have listed, I
hope all the children of Martin Kurfees (1817- ) and Hannah
o[Penry7] Kurfees (1820 -before 1910). No family Bible has been
located, so I have few if any dates of death. Notes names Caleb
t and James were given to sons born after the early deaths of these
V1 two first named sons.

c Davie County public Library
l; Mocksville, NC
K
In preparing your lineage charts be as complete AS POSSIBLE -
leave blanks where you have no information, as of the date of
preparation of chart. It is "desirable" to list both date AND
place of birth, marriage and death, and if possible locate the
burial site.
I note you have both Howell and Howard ancestry- as I do. My
Howells were Virginia, Tennessee and then Texas Howells; my
Howards were Rowan(now Davie) County, North Carolina then Bedford
County, Tennessee Howards•
Your inquiry has been processed using Davie County Public Library
research and copying facilities; I.enclose a library bill for these
services•
Your distant cousin,
Howell Boonell

Mr. Howell Boone
Boone's Farm Road
Route 1, Box 365A
Mocksville, North Carolina 27028
Dear Mr. Boone:
I would like to apologize for not having answered your note
sooner concerning my family tree. I was hoping to be able to
provide you with more information, but,for various reasons, this
is all that I have been able to gather. If you recall, I wrote
to you earlier this year expressing a desire to know if you could
help me establish some connection between my ancestors and the
Boone family.
For as long as I can remember, my grandmother , Ethel Everhardt,
has told me that we are related to the Boones through her
mother, Cora Ann Summers Howard. Since this is the line which
the connection is supposed to be through, I am not sending the
complete information which I have on my grandfather's side of
the family. I am, however, giving you everything which I have
on my grandmother's side.
The North Carolina census for 1880 gives the following
information.

John W. Summers white male 27 y==rs of age
Sarah E. Summers 28 years of age wife
Julia B. 5 dau
Cora A. 4 dau
Bettie L. 2 dau
Hannah C. 1 dau
&1N.R.
County: Davie Vol. 7p ED 57, Sheet 249 Line 28
page 2
These daughters are my great-grandmother, Cora A., and her
sisters. (The sisters have been identified to me by my
grandmother as her aunts.) My grandmother also recalls her
grandmother's name to have been Elisa (spelling here is
questionable) which may be what the "E" stands for in "Sarah
E. Summers".
The 1900 North Carolina census in Davie County gives the
following information.
Hanah kurfees white female DOB 5-20 age 80
Information was supplied to the census taker by John W.
Summers (son-in-law).
Township was Mocksville Township.
It would be my guess that this was Sarah E. Summers' mother, but
I can find nothing else to substantiate that assumption. My
grandmother did tell me, however, that her grandmother, Elisa
Summers, was a Kurfees before she married John Summers.
I hope that all of this makes sense. It seems as if I have
rambled.
Mr. Boone, I do appreciate your taking a look at this
information for me. If I can make some compensation to you for
your time and the expenses incurred in writing to me, please
let me know.
Sincerely,
Z.A1/.a'l,
(Mrs.) Joyce C. Lanier
