Going to my favorite. early source, I checked the 1790 U S Census
for North Carolina (found no Cotner) and Pennsylvania (found 4 Cotner
family heads in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, and no where else
in Pennsylvania. This Pennsylvania cluster may be the root of all of
Cotner family in America?
You have found a Frederick Cotner in Kentucky in 1788; in the
1800, 1810 and 1850 U S Census for North Carolina I find several Cotner
families in Guilford and Orange Counties of North Carolina. They are
living in North Carolina after Frederick Cotner has already settled in
Kentucky. There may or may not be a relationship between these several
Cotners.
There.definitely was a marriage between Squire Boone? and Nancy Cotner
as recorded on pages 203 and 204 of The Boone Family (1922) by Hazel A.
Spraker. Note: there is no + next to Melissa J. Boone or her sister
Nancy C. Boone; Mrs Spraker found not enough information to produce a
separate listing for either of these Boone daughters.
My own interest is in the Boone family in "the Forks of the Yadkin"
an area that included present-day Davie and Yadkin Counties in North
Carolina. So far as I am able to determine no Cotner ever lived in this
area; there were Cotners living in nearby Guilford and Orange Counties
of North Carolina.
But, if Nancy was descended from the Frederick Cotner you locate in
Kentucky in 1788, she was not descended from these Cotners who lived in
North Carolina - related perhaps but not descended. Note: the entry in
The Boone Family gives neither birthplace nor parentage of the Nancy
Cotner who married Squire Boone? on 15 May 1817.
AS I have suggested it would have been possible for Frederick Cotner:
to travel to Kentucky WITHOUT travelling through North Carolina. Still
he might have first gone to North Carolina with other Cotner family members
and then gone to Kentucky. But how to explain that no Cotner appears in
the 1790 U S Census for North Carolina?
After the successful defense of Fort Boonesborough in 1778, and
after the Battle of Blue Licks in 1782 (the Last battle of the American
Revolution fought in Kentucky) there was a flood of folks into. Kentucky
Amongst this flood of humanity were Boones, Lincolns and Cotners; they
may have been well acquainted in those early days. Certainly it is 1817
before we have a record of a Boone -Cotner marriage.

Dear Mr Boone,
Mar 13, 1986
Your name was given to us by Mrs Frances H Cassteners.
We are researching the family name COTNER. We find a Frederick
Cotner in Washington Co and Lincoln Co, Kentucky in 1788 in.
Marilyn's line. We have identified four distinct lines of COTNER"s
along with some others that we have not been able to place. Most
of our circumstantial information points to a common North
Carolina source.
Frederick also moves to Harrison County, Indiana, in the same
time frame as the Lincolns and Squire Boone. We have also found
that Nancy Cotner married Squire Boone, May 15, 1817, and bore
him two daughters prior to her death. Since there are time
coincidences we are wondering if COTNER -. KOTNER might be a
Yadkin County name.
We would appreciate any information you might give us and are
willing to share any information we have. Thanking you for
your courtesy,
