THE HOUSE OF CERDIC
Cerdic, the Saxon Chieftain who
founded the Kingdom of Wessex, was
also the virtual founder of British
Monarchy. The pedigree on the left is
the genealogy of Cerdic, which should
be regarded as legendary. It was the one

Wessex that they should be descended
from Cerdic. Otherwise fitness to rule
was the only factor taken into con-
sideration. The strongest Kings were
Ceawlin, Cedwalla, Inc and Egbert.
Cynegils was the first Christian King.
Cedwalla and Inc both abdicated their
thrones to make pilgrimages to Rome.
The five Kings Oz6-8bz) between Inc
and Egbert were eclipsed by the Kings
of Mercia and Northumbria, but Egbert
achieved lasting supremacy for Weesex,
and was styled in a charter `Rex
Anglorutn' (King of the English).

The aeaceni of she Royal Family from the
SOVEREIGN ]PRINCES OF WALES
( Genealogical Table below)
Wales Lonsisted of many small kingdoms
which in time consolidated into
Gwynedd (North Wales), Deheubarth
(South Wales) and Powys. Rhodri the
Great of Gwynedd uhifted most of
Wales under his rule, but at his death in
878 the country again became split,
Anarawd, his elder son, succeeding to
Gwvnedd, and Cadell, the younger, to
Deheubarth. Four Princes of South
Wales achieved power: Hywel the Good,
Gruffydd ap Llywelyn (whose widow
married Harold), Rhys ap Tewdwr, and
his grandson Rhys ap Gruffydd. In
North Wales Gruffydd ap Cynan (rival
of Rhys ap Tewdwr), struggled with the
conquering Normans, as did his son,
Owain Gwynedd. Llywelyn the Great
became Wales's most celebrated Prince.
His son, Gruffydd, fell into English
hands, and was killed whilst attempting
to escape from the Tower of London.
Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, the last native
Prince of Wales, was defeated by Edward
1, who made his own son, Edward,
Prince of Wales in 1301. Since then the
reigning Sovereign's eldest son has
usually been created Prince of Wales.
Richard II and his successors all des-
cended from Llywelyn the Great.

The descent of The Royal Family from
THE KINGS OF SCOTLAND
(Genealogical Table below)
The Royal House of Scotland was
fdunded by Fergus MacEre, a Christian
Irish chieftain, who left Ddnada in the
north of Antrim for Argyll about 503.
The Kings gradually increased their
territory,r nd Kenneth MacAlpin united
the Picts and Scott under his rule in 843.

life from the wurthic.t of his kin,
usually a collateral in preference to a
young son, the succession passed from
one branch to another.
When Malcolm 11 died in 1034 with-
out a male heir, the succession was
disputed. Duncan 1, sun of Malcolm's
daughter, Bcthoc, was' the first King of
the House of Atholl, but he was later
part t
slain by his cousin Macbeth, who took
possession of the throne.
Malcolm III restored the House of
Atholl in io38, and having spent 13
years at the court of Edward the Con.
fessur, Anglicised his own coon. He
=tried Margaret, the heiress of the
English Royal House, who had fled to
Scotland aftv the Nornun Conquest.
