Original Davie County Flag Unveiling
The original Davie County flag was conceived and constructed in 1976. It was carried in the
Bicentennial Parade on July 3, flew at the courthouse on July 4, and then was displayed in the
courthouse for some 20 years. At that time, it was taken down to Charlotte so that Conder Flag
Company could construct copies to fly at Davie County buildings. The original flag then was
stored for a long period of time until last year when it was brought out of storage and re-
framed.
I want to thank those attending this unveiling who had a hand in this special local history
project. It has been rewarding for me to see the civic pride of these folks as evidenced by their
interest and their presence tonight. I want to recognize and thank several people for their roles:
To the County Commissioners for allowing time to conduct this unveiling;
To Beth Dirks and Jim Stockert for backing the project to preserve and re-hang the flag;
To the North Davie Ruritan Club for sponsoring the contest in 1976 to design and create
the flag;
To Tom Campbell who at age 13 submitted the winning design out of about 35 entries;
To the Clarksville Homemaker Club which constructed the flag; several representatives
are here today: Pauline Harpe, Brenda Eaton, Grace Anderson, and Patricia Shelton;
To Ken Sales, manager at Baker Furniture in 1976, for framing the flag originally;
To Brent Ward who arranged for the flag to be hung in the courthouse, and arranged
for copies to be made and hung at county office buildings, and whose ongoing inter est
led to this unveiling today; and
To Nancy and Katie Collette who stored and re-framed the flag to the highest
preservation standards so that it can be enjoyed for years to come.
Thanks to all of you for your work on our Davie County flag.
