Research for The Civil War Roster of Davie County, North Carolina found 55 additional men
who died in the Civil War whose names are not on the war memorial marker in Mocksville. At
the November 2009 meeting, our members voted to donate $200 toward the fund to engrave
these names on the marker.

MATHEMATICS IN HISTORY AND GENEALOGY
There is a reference to this first rule in the apprentice section on page 6.
The Merchant’s Rule The main tool of Graunt’s mercantile-turned-political arithmetic was the Rule of Three.
The Rule of Three is the simple arithmetic technique of using three knowns to solve for a fourth unknown factor in a ratio
relationship. For example, solving for c in the expression a/b = c/d or a:b = c:d (Editor’s note: in current math books,
this is called solving a proportion. Example: if 5 apples cost $1.00, what would 4 apples cost?)
Subtracting Upside Down. You’re standing at a tombstone with the birth date September 28, 1842 and below that
is the death date of March 10, 1911. How old was the person at death? Can you figure days, months, and years of life?
Change March 10, 1911 to 1911 3 10
and change September 28, 1842 to 1842 9 28.
You can’t subtract 28 from 10, so borrow 30 days from 3 months
1911 2 40
1842 9 28
You can’t subtract 9 from 2, so borrow 12 months from 1911
1910 14 40
1842 9 28
Then when you subtract, you get 68 years, 5 months and 12 days.
A genealogy software program, such as PAF, will figure this for you. Their answer is 68 years, 5 months and 10 days. We
averaged the days in a month at 30 days, and they knew the exact numbers of days in this interval.
Calendar Dates. The Gregorian calendar, which is the calendar used today, was first introduced by Pope
Gregory XIII via a papal bull in February 1582 to correct an error in the old Julian calendar. Ten days were
omitted from the calendar to bring the calendar back in line with the solstices. The British Colonies in what
became the United States ended using the Julian calendar and began using the Gregorian in September of 1752.
The Spanish Colonies ended the Julian in 1584 and began Gregorian in 1584.
The dates you list for ancestors previous to this early time will have to be defined as to which calendar is being used.

Surveying Measures:
Long Measure:
12 inches make 1 foot
3 feet make 1 yard
5 ƒ yards or 16 ƒ feet make 1 pole or rod
40 poles make 1 furlong
8 furlongs or 320 poles make 1 mile
320 poles square make 640 acres
Chain Measure:
7.92 inches make 1 link
100 links or 66 feet make 1 chain
10 chains make 1 furlong
80 chains make 1 mile
Other tricky stuff:
Grantee buys.
Grantor sells.
Is your computer data backed up?
Have you shared your family photos?
What would you grab in an evacuation?
I wrote this following a visit that my son and
I made to the family homeplace in Davidson
County. Linda Barnette
Our Grail
Like the knights of old who traveled far to
find the Holy Grail,
my son and I searched for our family grail
today.
We found it in the woods so far from
anything,
a ghostly specter of what had been our
ancestral home,
no longer watching proudly as the sentinel it
once was,
but broken and barely standing, neglected
and alone.
I thought of all the family reunions,
gatherings and such
that when I was a little girl I used to dread
so much.
But as I saw it there today so lonely and
alone,
I wished for one more golden day that I
could go back home.
My ancestors will never know that
I cared enough to search for them today.
But I am here because of them
and my son because of me.
So the spirit of a family abides
for all Eternity.
DAVIE COUNTY GUARDIAN ACCOUNTS, 1844 - 1868 (cont.)
From the North Carolina State Archives (CR 033.510.10)
Transcribed by Grace Wight and Marcia Masser
gdn is the abbreviation of “guardian for”
Guardians were appointed to be responsible for
orphans, children of living parents when the children were
receiving money from estates – or other sources – such as
grandparents. The guardian was in most cases a relative
or neighbor. A parent could be appointed as guardian of
their own children if they were inheriting from the
mother’s estate or from another relative.
Orphans were mostly fatherless; sometimes both
parents were deceased. A child fourteen years and older
could select their own guardian. This still holds true
today. Anyone under twenty-one years of age was called
“infants”.
Guardians were required to submit a yearly report to
show expenditures for the child’s schooling, medical,
clothing, room and board, etc. If the guardian was not
doing his job, he could be replaced. In most cases the
guardian either moved, died, or was not capable of doing
his job.
More can be found on guardian affairs in the N.C.
State Archives. There are guardian records with much
more detail than presented here. These records are
Guardian Records 1838-1918. These are arranged by
family surname. Any interest by anyone who might have
a record prior to the formation of Davie County in 1836
should consult the Rowan County records.

DAVIE COUNTY, N. C. APPRENTICE BONDS
Before the development of the various social
programs devised by the Federal and State government
the counties had to provide for the care of orphans.
Sometimes parents could not support their children.
Children were then bound out to a master who in turn
was to provide the child training comparable to
vocational training and give them the necessities of life.
Many times the apprentice records are
overlooked by people doing research for a lost child.
These records are rich in information. In the record you
can find names, ages, sometimes a date of birth, parents
and the training the child was to receive.
Also included were the names of the master, the
Clerk of Court, and witnesses, the date of the indenture.
A child over fourteen years of age could bind himself or
choose his master. This was not limited to the poor.
Wealthy parents could bind their children to learn a
trade or skill.
The apprentice's age was usually given. The
service for males was usually until age 21. Females
were usually bound until age 18.
In return for the work provided the master was
to provide: education such as reading, writing,
arithmetic to the rule of three (defined in this issue),
sufficient diet, washing, lodging, apparel, and medical
care. In most cases annual reports were to be presented
at Court and filed. This assured the court that the child
was not being mistreated.
When the indenture was over, the child was
given at that time freedom dues, new clothing, a Bible,
tools and perhaps a horse.
Through these records you can also get a good
idea of the variety of occupations of the people in the
community. Don't forget these records if they are
available.
PREVIOUS ISSUES containing apprentice info:

2004 issue 3 had 1837

They will appear in future Dossiers and on the web site.
