SOCIETY NEWS
On April 24TH, the Historical Society joined with the Friends of the Library to hear the
speaker, Robert Morgan, the author of the book, “Boone”. It is an excellent record of Daniel
Boone’s life and he had copies of the book for sale at the meeting.
Friends of the Library is in charge of the sale of the books after the meeting if anyone is
interested in purchasing a copy.

At the meeting of the Society on May 27th,Charles Crenshaw of Mocksville presented a
very interesting program using pictures he has collected of Davie County and its citizens and
other outstanding events in Davie. There was a large attendance at this meeting and interesting
reflections and rememberances were enjoyed by all.

On June 24th, Jane McAllister , our Heritage Librarian, presented a wonderful
introduction into the information to be had in our History Room -shelf by shelf and in between.
Family histories, Military histories, State histories and other information is available for
research by the general public. The collection of old books and Bibles from different families is
also housed here. This was an introductory walk-through and the next meeting, on August 26th ,
will be about additonal information available in our History Room.
Marie Roth shared her collection of note books. Her picture and story notebook of
Historical markers honoring people and events in Davie County covered events in Davie County,
mostly along our highways.

As this issue of the Dossier is late, we are able to report on the July 22nd meeting of the
Society. Sheek Bowden Jr., presented the story and film of “Enola Gay”. As most of us are
aware, Davie County native Col. Joe Ferebee was the bombadier who dropped the first atomic
bomb on Japan. Sheek served in this squadron although he was not a member of the “Enola
Gay”crew.

Please mark your calendar for the next meeting of the Society on Tuesday, August 26th,
at 7:00 p.m. in the History Room of the Davie County Public Library.

Joppa Journal
Material contributed by Linda H. Barnette
Joppa Cemetery has been getting a lot of attention lately, particularly from a professor at
Lenoir-Rhyne College and a group of his students.Mark Hager and several students have spent
the summer learning about Joppa. They researched the people buried there and cleaned the
stones to make the carvings on them easier to read.According to Hager, the main purpose of the
work is to identify the people who are buried in the cemetery and to find possible connections to
their descendants who may still be in this vicinity today.Additionally, the Lenoir-Rhyne work
may facilitate Joppa's being entered to the National Register of Historical Places.
The Joppa Directors are planning a fund drive this October, the first since 2003.The
Directors do this periodically in order to continue to care for their cemetery.Paying for mowing
and general yard maintenance, replacing trees that have been damaged by ice, recementing
markers that have fallen, and, this year, paving the circular driveway are projects covered by
these funds. If you would like to contribute to this fund drive, please make your check payable
to First Presbyterian Church, put Joppa Cemetery on the line at the bottom, and mail to Cyrette
Sanford, 360 N. Main Street, Mocksville, NC 27028.All donations would be appreciated.

History Room Update
The June 24 meeting of the DC Historical Association featured an update from Jane
McAllister, Librarian of the Martin-Wall Local History Room of Davie County Public Library,
on the resources available to researchers in the History Room.
McAllister highlighted the organization of the physical collection first, explaining the
arrangement of books on the shelves and files in the file cabinet. An ongoing project is to have
notebooks of family files bound in order to better preserve them for future use. McAllister
informed the group that Volume XVI of North Carolina Troops 1861-1865 had just been added
to the collection. The volume focuses on William Holland Thomas’s Legion, and is edited by
Matthew Brown and Michael Coffey.
The group learned about the vault inventory project, whereby the contents of the history
room vault are being organized and cataloged in order to improve access to those resources. In
the near future, some of those holdings will be digitized for sharing online. Of particular note is
the organization of various photograph collections into notebooks, and the inventory of papers
from the James McGuire Collection. Many photographs in the notebooks remain unidentified, so
local residents will be encouraged to visit the history room and try to identify any people or
buildings in the photos.
Other new resources noted include DVDs on Cooleemee and on Peter Stuart Ney put out
by the Rowan Public Library. In addition, the history room has CD-ROMs on Pennsylvania vital
records 1700s-1800s, Virginia vital records 1600s-1800s, Virginia genealogies and biographies
1500s-1900s, and NC wills 1665-1900.

McAllister assured the association that the Lagle land grant and Hughes historical maps,
along with the Davie County record books continue to generate a lot of interest and sales.

Found the quote below from the "Windsor and Eton Express," a local English newspaper,
in the 11 December 1830 issue.
"An ornithological match recently in a parish near Edinburgh, has set
the whole neighbourhood in a flutter. Miss Henrietta Peacock espoused
Mr. Robin Sparrow, the bridesman being Mr. Phillip Hawk, and
bridesmaid Miss Larkins; the marriage line were extracted by J. Crow,
the Session-clerk."
