HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING
The Davie County Historical and Genealogical Society met in regular session on
Monday, May 25, and again on June 27, 2005 in a meeting room adjacent to the Brock Gym.
Minutes of the previous meeting and a financial report were given.
President Wensil began discussions about the projected re-enactment of the August 1756
wedding of Daniel and Rebecca Boone which will be celebrated on the 250th anniversary of the
occasion.Sally Braunstein, a visitor from the Arts Council, noted suggestions concerning a
drama presentation by school children and said she would be very interested in finding an
appropriate play for them. She indicated that Debbie Pullen has expressed support of the project.
President Wensil appointed Jimmy Myers to head up the re-enactment project. Craft ideas were
discussed, keeping in mind early American crafts which would be quilting, sewing, gunsmithing,
tin smithing, and pottery. The Brock Center and the Masonic Picnic Ground will be considered
as a convenient site for the celebration. Traffic control and port-o-johns were also mentioned.
In June, Dale McCulloh and President Wensil took Annette Ratledge and Elizabeth
Woodward to view the Trading Ford and Second Creek. A future tour of the Great Wagon Road
will be considered.

If you could see your ancestors all standing in a row,
Would you be proud of them, or don’t you really know?
Strange discoveries are made in climbing the family tree.
Occasionally one is found who shocks his progeny.
If you could see your ancestors all standing in a row,
Perhaps there may be one or two you wouldn’t care to know.
Now turn the question right about and take another view.
When you shall meet your ancestors, will they be proud of you?

CEMETERY ART ON GRAVESTONES
Reprinted from the Allred Family Newsletter
By the 19th Century, even on the frontier, the art of stone cutting had become more than
just name, birth, and death dates. Gravestones became eloquent with poems in praise of the
individual and were often artistic –indicating their religious beliefs, or sometimes, an
occupation. Stone cutters provided a legacy for the deceased and their families.
The next time you visit an older cemetery to honor a relative, look closely as you may
find something interesting about the individual. Also explore the cemetery and look for
interesting things about the lives of the deceased. A list of some of the common gravestone
carvings is below:
Bugles –Resurrection;Military
Candle being snuffed –Time; mortality
Crossed swords –High-ranking Military

HUMOR
Acronym Identifies Progenitor
By Nancy Garrett
While tracking an ancestor in the census records I noticed that he always had the initials CE after
his name. Being familiar with some notes after a person's name such as John Wilkins OP (which
stands for Old Plantation Creek) to distinguish him from another John Wilkins who lived at the
same time --I assumed it was a designation of where he lived.
Several censuses later the enumerator spelled it out. He was cross-eyed.

Ancestors Come in Many Flavors
By Tannie Rothgeb Tate in Tennessee
While searching for my SUNDAY ancestors in a U.S. census index, I ran across this entry:
SUNDAY, Carmel
Makes me wonder what her children's names were –Chocolate? Strawberry?
Maybe even Hot Fudge?
Thanks to Julie in NSW Australia.
When I was about 12 years old, a friend of mine had a friend from another school whose name
was Stormie. Stormie had two sisters --Rainie and Hayley. Their brother's name was Sonny.
Perhaps their father was a meteorologist?
